Coach Vigen tied Mike Kramer today for the 4th most all-time wins by a head coach. Kramer did it in 7 seasons, Vigen did it in less than 4. If the Bobcats go 12-0 and win the national championship, Vigen would surpass Sonny Holland for the 2nd most all-time wins in Frisco. Hope he sticks around, his recruiting philosophy suggests to me that he's looking to build something long-term here and won't bolt for the first crappy FBS job with a pay raise but also a massive rebuilding project.
i hope he stays until both kids graduate MSU.
Are you sure? I’ve been reliably informed he’s very similar to Rob Ash.
This is a terrible look by any poster.
I’m not what he means. Must be an inside joke.
I didn’t pick that up, but I would hope so. Disappointing comment if otherwise.
I’m clowning on a few posters who have compared Vigen to Ash because he’s not as intense or charismatic as Choate. As in, “You sure you want him to stay?”

Not everything has to be taken seriously dude.
Why is he so obsessed with all of your posts???
I post on everybody’s. What you talking about?

I actually meant to add an amendment to this after talking this out with Montana State sports information.

Tommy Mellott currently is credited with 26 "starter" wins. He also should get credit for two more wins that he finished.

The Montana State record is 30 wins by DeNarius McGhee. He broke Paul Dennehy's previous school record in 2012 against Sac State.

Vernon Adams went 28-6 at Eastern Washington. I credited him with 35 wins off the cuff, which is correct for career wins, but he went 7-3 at Oregon.

Dave Dickenson has the Big Sky record 33 wins, including the playoffs.

PS - the fact that Tommy played key roles as a special teams player, back up linebacker, receiver, Wildcat quarterback....even when he wasn't the starting quarterback...means there should be an amendment to this category...Still, if he and the Bobcats win out, he'll tie McGhee's school record. He could beat beat Dickenson if Montana State run the table all the way through Frisco....
Thanks for setting everything straight. Do you happen to know what the career records of Tommy and DeNarius are? I believe at one point Tommy had never lost a game that he both started and finished so he can't have many losses at this point, although if we lose after he goes out that counts against him, which is probably a majority of his losses.
DeNarius McGhee was 30-7 as a starter and would've had more wins (and losses) had he not missed time as a senior.

Tommy Mellott won the first 17 games he started AND finished in his career and is 25-3 overall in those scenarios. He has won 26 games and lost six games that he started, although he did not finish three of those.
@Colter_Nuanez @TomCat88

Denarious was 30-7 after his Junior year, he won 6 more games in 2013, so it's really 36 wins. Note that roster bio was completed going into his senior season.

As we head into the final stretch of the football season, there's been a lot of talk about how well MSU’s starters have performed. What’s even more impressive? They’ve only played two full games this season (New Mexico and ISU). With dominant wins and early leads, the team has often rested starters for large portions of games, protecting them for the long haul.

While this strategy is great for keeping players fresh and healthy, it raises an interesting question: What impact does it have on the potential to break team records?

Even with limited game time, MSU’s athletes are putting up impressive stats, but the lack of full-game reps could make it harder to chase those season-long record goals. However, their per-game efficiency and the depth of talent on this roster show that MSU is making the most of every minute on the field.

Add to that, we've been that good on offense with two of our best players on offense, projected starters, not having played a snap yet. Also impressive how the D keeps rolling despite being down three starters\leaders.

Thanks 4kk. That explains the discrepancy. 36 wins is going to hold up for a long time. Special player.

It might, but it might not. Vigen has 40 wins halfway through his 4th season. If they are able to hold on to him and the momentum, and if the FCS divide continues to widen, I could see this falling in the next few years.

For example, if Chance Wilson is the future, and starts the next three years, and they only lose 1 regular season game, that puts him at 30-33 wins depending on if they play 11 or 12. A few playoff wins puts him right in that window. Denarious was incredible at the time, but put him on the current team with the current staff and he's easily over 40 wins, those teams never really made deep playoff runs.

Just a side note; Bruce Barnum has been coaching at Portland State since 2015 and has 36 wins total in all that time. I know, other factors go into winning, Portland State doesn't have the money that MSU has and Barnum isn't a terrible coach. It's just amazing though the success MSU has had with its past two head coaches, and especially Vigen.

Wow, fastest of any big sky team, super impressive.

Honestly I’m surprised that hauck doesn’t have that record from his first go around? His first 4 years could not have been much worse then that?

Looks like Bobby wasn't too far behind this. Got his 40th win in the playoffs of year 4 and was 40-12 at that point.

I checked a few coaches and didn't find anyone who got to 40 faster than Hauck. The closest was Joe Glenn who went 39-6 in his three seasons with UM from 2000-2002. One more game there and he'd have been the record holder!

I think that narrative is backfiring. The players hear it and it’s motivating them from the sounds of it. Vigen says stuff like, the nonconference schedule is made years in advance and the league sets the BSC schedule, and we just play whoever’s next.

I was re-watching some high lites from the SHSU game a few years ago. Tommy ran for a TD, passed for a TD, and caught a TD pass in that game. Has that ever happened before in Bobcat football history and if so, who else did it? That's probably a question for Bill Lamberty.

I believe he’s referring to Travis Jonsen.

I was re-watching some high lites from the SHSU game a few years ago. Tommy ran for a TD, passed for a TD, and caught a TD pass in that game. Has that ever happened before in Bobcat football history and if so, who else did it? That's probably a question for Bill Lamberty.
check chambers... and that other guy who moved to wr.
In a single game? I don't remember Chambers catching a pass let alone scoring a TD on a reception. Other guy?
I believe he’s referring to Travis Jonsen.
Didn't Kevin Kassis do it once?
Ty McCullough got 2 legs of it in the game against northern Colorado this year when he passed for a TD and caught a TD. He only had one rush in that game for 13 yards and that play was at mid field so no TD.

If you're looking for someone with a little authority, I'm your man. I have as little as anyone!

Bobcat athletics is a business to the coaches, school leadership, and players. It's time the fans treat Bobcat athletics as a business too.
