This is so crazy to me. Maybe it happens all the time. Anyway, per team it goes:

MSU - Since losing to UM in 2021 38-8 and 38-2 excluding losses to NDSU (3) and SDSU (3).
SDSU - Since losing to USD in 2021 47-3 and 47-0 excluding losses to MSU (1) and NDSU (2).
NDSU - Since losing to SHSU in spring 2021 59-8 and 59-4 excluding losses to SDSU (4) (none to MSU).

The 13 of 19 combined losses to each other is striking. Twice as many losses to each than to every team they've played combined.

The reason NDSU has so many more games is because their last loss not to SDSU was way back in the Covid semifinals.
What an amazing stat! Thanks for pointing that out!
so what you are saying is to change the playoffs to a 3 team bracket with an 8 team play in for the 4th spot?

I don’t think anybody said that.

Didn't they get beat by UM in the 2023 semifinals and lost to USD last year?
Yes, that's exactly why I included UM and USD in the parenthesis in the Tweet.

No, their starting point was the SHSU game, not the UM game. Since the games listed the two teams have combined to lose 6 games to teams other than themselves.

MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Wasn't that in the quarters to SHSU?
Okay, but regardless, since that loss they're 59-8 and half their losses are to SDSU.

It's kind of been that way. Of the last 16 semifinal teams, 11 out of a max 12, have been MSU, SDSU, NDSU. The most they could accumulate is 12. MSU missed in 2023, but either the Cats or NDSU weren't going to make it since they played in the second round. So really they've maxxed out their opportunities.
