NDSU should be the next team to move up.
The exodus of the really good FCS programs, like NDSU, into the FBS is what has tipped me over the edge into hoping that MSU can switch.
I think the FCS is objectively a better system. I love the playoff format. I really don't like the idea of playing at a level where there's no realistic hope for a championship.
But winning an FCS championship is itself cheapened if all of the legit programs are gone. It would be hard to get too terribly excited about a national title if the Cats had to go through, say, Davidson, Elon, SE Louisiana, and Samford to get there.
This is where I land. The FCS used to have some pretty "big time" schools, and it wasn't that long ago. App State, Georgia Southern, JMU, Jacksonville State all had great tradition and fairly large fanbases. Then you have schools that didn't have a ton of fans but had strong programs, like SHSU.
I mean look at all the FCS teams since 2000 who either dropped down or dropped football - Cal State Northridge, Saint John's (NY), Canisius, Fairfiled, Morris BRown, Siena, Saint Mary's (CA), Saint Peter's, La Salle, Iona, Northeastern, Hofstra, Winstom-Salem State, Texas-San Antonio, Savannah State, Jacksonville.
The FCS is and has been a league where maybe 25% of the members try and spend resources to win, and the rest just sort of have a football program just to have one, or to offer students a way to pay for school, etc. Look at my list above of teams who have dropped their program, just an example of how serious some schools take football at this level. I mean how many schools don't even offer scholarships?
The FCS is a fine level and it exists for a reason, but more and more the number of teams who give a sh*t is shrinking. I didn't feel this way 10 years ago, not even really 5 years ago. All of his realignment has changed my tune.
