Well, shoot. If this should pass, that’s going to pretty much kill any chance to get into the FBS without serious bankroll. Despite anyone’s preference for staying vs leaving for FBS, we should all want that option available in (at least) a “break glass in case of emergency” in the event the FCS starts to collapse in on itself. The nice thing is that I could see a conference like the MWC helping out with this fee, but there’s no way they’d do it entirely, and certainly not unless they were in some dire straits (which they likely would be if they were inviting 2 FCS programs not named UCD)

Pretty sure MSU’s capable of doing that. But they may not need to so may as well wait.Danster21 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 28, 2023 1:41 pmWell, shoot. MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Re: Moving up
Me thinks the NCAA is playing a long game of reshuffling the levels. Charging $5M to move up does a good job of stopping the bleeding (weak FBS candidates that still want to move up).
There's clearly a power level that competes for the best college team of the year, and that won't change. But there are many FBS teams that won't ever get there. Ever. There are many FCS teams that will compete very well with the lower FBS, and those teams will likely form a level. Many FCS teams won't make it to the 2nd tier. Thankfully.
Regardless, I know MSU is working like crazy to be best positioned for our best outcome when the inevitable hammer drops.

Re: Moving up
This surprises me. I wonder if they have gotten some kind of inside information regarding the future of the PAC 12. To my knowledge they still don’t have a TV deal.

Disney is in deep sh*t financially. ESPN is going through considerable downsizing. The MWC is in a better position administratively than the huge egos in the pac.
Who in the hell wants to stay up until 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. in the middle of the week to watch WAZZU vs Cal? Perhaps a decent steaming contract will placate the intellectual elite as they sip their Cali wine and eat their Tillamook cheese slices.

Re: Moving up
SDSU isn’t leaving the MWC (today) because the PAC10 hasn’t offered them an invitation yet. Supposedly the PAC10 won’t address their expansion until they finalize their TV deal. Their best offer is a streaming deal, that isn’t as good as their current TV package.
SDSU has to buy their way out of the MWC. If they wanted out of the MWC by fall 2024 their exit fee was 17 million if they left by June 30th (today), the exit fee goes up to 34 million July 1st (tomorrow) for a fall 2024 exit. Since they have no other guaranteed conference invitations their going to stay in the MWC one more year.
Their now hoping for a fall 2025 exit, assuming there still is a PAC**.

As Everett Dirksen said, "a billion here and a billion there and pretty soon you are talking real money". SDSU would have to have some extremely deep pockets.Steve D wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 11:40 pmSDSU isn’t leaving the MWC (today) because the PAC10 hasn’t offered them an invitation yet. This is about to get ugly. Mountain West says SDSU withdrew and they want their money. The conference is keeping SDSU 6.6 million payment and they want the rest of the 17 million. You know the old saying. Fish or cut bait. Looks like the Mountain West, cut the bait for them.

Guessing SDSU is still making payments on their new stadium and counting on that 6.6 million payout from the Mountain West.

If the Pac(insert number) can't get a deal and it goes away, I wonder what happens to SDSU(west coast)

SDSU pulled their sack out of the fire. Still in the Mountain West. It cost them a big ass attorney fee. Talk is cheap, until you talk to an attorney.

Just watched 365 Sports and their guest today is a writer for a San Diego newspaper who said SDSU is probably locked in with the MWC for at least two more years now. What can Montana State do in the next two years to position itself to be ready if the MWC comes calling? And to be clear, I used to be against the idea of moving up but have warmed up to the idea in recent years.

Re: Moving up
Convince the MUS/BOR to dissolve UM into MSU-Missoula, or at least eliminate their athletics department, so that there is only one D1 school in the state. Anything else would only marginally increase the odds until the entire FBS structure is overhauled.Woodenshoe wrote: ↑Thu Jul 20, 2023 10:11 amJust watched 365 Sports and their guest today is a writer for a San Diego newspaper who said SDSU is probably locked in with the MWC for at least two more years now.
