I can’t believe we cannot recruit and develop a qb...

Wait, isn’t that exactly what they are doing with Rovig, Bauman and Beltran? They recruited them, they gave them a year or two to develop, and now they get to prove themselves. Pretty sure that how most competitions for any position go.

Sheesh guys, it's the 3rd practice, and the 1st in shoulder pads. Can we give it a week or so before we start to panic about QB please???

To clarify on something Choate said...

He said he would like to name a starter after the first scrimmage. That does not mean that he will be able to, just that it is his goal.
Exactly. And in reality, Tyler Bruggman won the spot about a week into fall camp and then kept the spot for six games, meaning he was MSU's starting QB for nine weeks. Then Chris Murray started five games, but had to fend off Bruggman in the spring of 2017 and Rovig in the spring of 2018. Murray started 11 games in '17, the longest stretch MSU has had an entrenched starter, even if begrudgingly.

Rovig battled Murray last spring, couldn't seize the job, got overtaken by Andersen in fall camp. But if you believe Choate, the competition raged on until the middle of October when Rovig broke his foot, or otherwise, he would've started.

Now another quarterback battle. The point is that Choate has a stated goal to decide a starter, as stated above. But Montana State has not consistently been settled on a quarterback since October of 2016. No one other than Bruggman has been anointed and empowered for any more than a few months.

In the last four years, MSU has had four different QB coaches (Courtney Messingham, DeNarius McGhee, Bob Cole, Matt Miller) and four different offensive play callers (Messingham, Brian Armstrong & Cole, Miller).

It was my understanding Choate is more or less deferring to Matt Miller’s judgment in these issues. Has that changed? I understand you can’t wait until the last day of camp, but I have to believe if Miller thinks he needs an additional week that he’ll get it. Especially for such an important decision where we can’t afford to be wrong.

Miller will have the final word. But what I'm saying is making an important decision can be sort of inconsequential if the door continues revolving like it has the last few years. No QB decision has been the final decision since October 2016.

Colter I listened to your podcast. Your pretty rough on the QBs and I’m sure, deservedly so. Do you think Thelen or Knight could learn quick enough and show the toughness, leadership, and moxie to be the leader that Choate wants?

Yep. Which is exactly why I truly believe Troy Andersen will be back behind center by game 3. Natural born leader who the players play for and trust. That alone is worth making him the QB regardless of his passing skill set there. I’ve heard from many who know more than me that Rovig just isn’t taking this job and running with it.

The biggest question is Bauman ready to take the job? If they are both even do you go with the Qb that can start off faster/ bigger upside?

Colter, I agree with you on this. It has been a frustration for Choate’s tenure to-date. We have had no coaching consistency on offense and it has manifested in the struggle to find a QB.

Choate and his staff have not done a good job of recruiting and developing the most important position position on any football team.

I had a thought. If the defense is as good as Colter and Brooks say, would that not contribute to a young qb being hesitant? If the corners and safeties are that tight on the receivers do't you think that they would hesitate to throw against them?

Is Rovig supposed to have the QB job sewn up? Has he looked bad at practice? I’ve been reading things like he has more zip on the ball, which was the big knock against him last year.

The offense sure won the day on Sunday. Take it with a grain of salt without being full contact but you could hear Ioane chewing their ass at the end of the play it period. I don't necessarily disagree with some of the views of the Nuanez bros. but they don't see everything and seem to take a little too much pleasure ripping the MSU QB's. At the end of the day, this is on Choate. Time will tell. I am hoping for the best.

Yes, yesterday the offense took the day. Bauman was with the ones all day and Rovig with the twos. They both moved the ball down the field on each opportunity in the 11 on 11's. Both were very sharp. Yes, we will see more when they start tackling and scrimmaging. After just 3 practices, it appears the QB situation is coming along fine.

Exactly. This is is only day 4 of camp. These QB's need reps reps reps. If the offense took it to the D I would be more worried about the defense right now as the D is supposed to be ahead early on in camp (especially breaking in new QB's).

It's all different when it's live. Don't worry *too* much about defense, they're very good.

You nailed it in regards to the QB's, imo. They need reps. Bauman, especially. Rovig has had almost every opportunity to play since he got here, I'm not sure how many more reps he needs to figure it out/be confident.

Yeah, I guess we will have to wait and see how they do in the first scrimmage. Choate has been raving about the secondary so maybe other Big Sky team QB's would be struggling some as well against the D. I'm with you though, the QB's need to take a step forward and soon. We have been lucky with McGhee, Prukop etc. where QB's have been able to step in and kick butt early (that is not always the case). I'm surprised they didn't try and pick up a veteran transfer this year just for security and experience. They must have saw enough of Rovig/Bauman and Co. in the spring to think we would be okay (we do have the Ace in the hole tough too ;) ). I guess we will see how it plays out.

Listening to Colter’s latest podcast, it doesn’t sound pretty. He’s thrown a bunch of picks and doesn’t appear ready. They said Bauman doesn’t look much better but they think he may have more upside at this point.

They did try to pick up a transfer QB, which should tell you a lot. It didn’t work out.

Last year Rovig was 42-68-2, 584 yards and four TDs. (147.4) Take the first half of the SDSU game out and he was 36-55-0, 562 yards and three touchdowns. (165.7) Take out the Wagner game and he’s 13-19-1, 252 yards and one TD. (186.7).

He had one bad half (the 1st half) of football in his first start on the road against a very good team. Even if you take out the easy Wagner stats, he’s still rates very high.

Side note: don’t feed the troll.
