We have three QB's that can win Big Sky games, however, we need that QB that can go beat teams like EWU and Weber. While I know the Cats don't play those guys, we need a guy that can consistently make good throws. I personally favor Rovig, but I would not be shocked if Bauman plays as well. I think QB is a tremendous strength and not a weakness this season. What other Big Sky teams have three QB's that can go get wins?

So after all this debate (31 pages) the Cats didn't bring in a transfer QB. Is it because we couldn't or because Choate realized we had the guys we needed already? Only time will tell by I am optimistic base on the comments I'm hearing, both from players and coaches.

When you look back at the Cats since 2000, it is easy to see that the most success we have had has been when we have had a stud QB/leader. They put the team on their shoulders and showed they could win. If feel that both Rovig and Bauman have that in them. They have talent, they have determination and now they just need to be leaders and carry this team.

Going up against our defense and especially our secondary every day will surely help in their development.

I like the qb’s that can consistently throw against press man coverage with conviction and accuracy.

Troy put the opposing defenses in a conundrum last year on how to defend us. With a more traditional offense it will put a little more pressure on our qb’s to perform.

From Greg Rachac (Billings Gazette):
Members of the offense say they are seeing good things out of both Rovig and Bauman early in camp.

“All summer they’ve been competing their butts off. They’re both fighting,” right guard Lewis Kidd said. “Whoever is going to be the guy, we’re going to trust him and we’re going to block the same way.

“We’re confident in either of them. It’s just who’s got the most consistency. Both have been doing a good job of taking control of the huddle and really taking command of the offense.”

“It’s a close call right now between both of them,” left tackle Mitch Brott said. “They’re both showing great leadership skills. They’ve made a big step since last year and they both have a lot more confidence.”
What I think is significant about these comments is that Choate says he’s looking for a leader that the players trust.

Coach Choate mentions we need more consistency in the QB position (which they do as they are young), but one of the best ways they can do that is by calling the right plays to get the QB's in a groove and increase their confidence level. I liked coach Choate's comments about Rovig getting hot and being in a groove in the Wagner and second half of the SDSU game. I agree, you could really see it. Going against a tough D should only help them as well with tight throws and timing.

Counterpoint. If you have two QBs, you don’t have a QB yet.

That’s probably a good counterpoint. I’m just trying to figure out what it’s a counterpoint to. #-o

The best news is that 3 of last year's quarterbacks are not number 1 and 2 in this discussion.

It’s a Div II school, Great American Conference.

Colter and Brooks aren't making me feel very optimistic about this battle...

Rovig apparently turned a corner today and we weren't there to see it. I just logged on to post this quote, then saw this comment  It's a long camp but Choate said he wants to have the spot solidified by a week from today...

“Tucker had a very good day, very efficient in the pass game, taking advantage of what the defense was giving us,” Choate said on Sunday.

How has Beltran been? Haven't heard his name at all?

And I know you've said Rovig has been turnover prone, has Bauman been as well? Thanks!

Choate talked about him in one of the videos. Beltran has been mentoring the freshman, getting them up to speed on how practices work.

Bauman sounds like a freak. Anoint him the man, get him the reps, and roll.

My general impression and it is a major hole - we have it are really close to a championship level squad.

Except for QB which still sounds like a bad high school.

Not a good recipe- Choate has to let this play out a little longer- backs the wrong guy will set us back - a lot. Not a position to have a tentative player.

I can’t believe we cannot recruit and develop a qb...

Best of luck to Murray, where ever he ends up. No matter what, at least he can say he went undefeated against UM.

To clarify on something Choate said...

He said he would like to name a starter after the first scrimmage. That does not mean that he will be able to, just that it is his goal.
