Coston continues to impress
Kyle Coston from Lynden, Washington is a strong, athletic wing being recruited on the west coast. Coston, 6-foot-8 200 pounds, led his team to the state tournament this past year and then followed that up in the spring with a nice showing at the Kingwood Classic.
This past year at Lynden Christian, Kyle averaged 19 points, 8.5 rebounds and four assists a game. He shot 44 percent from the floor, 36 percent from three-point range and 74 percent from the free throw line. Coston led Lynden, who finished 21-6, to the Washington 2A State Tournament this year where he was named to the five member all-tournament first team and was sixth in scoring and second in rebounding. His team lost in the first round but won their last three games to fight back to grab fifth place in the 16 team tournament.
Schools looking at him consist of many of the Pac Ten schools and a majority of the West Coast Conference and the Big Sky Conference. "The team's that called the most this spring are Montana State, San Diego and San Diego State," said his coach at Lynden Vic Wolfiss. "During the season, Washington State, Washington and Portland State were the teams most interested. I know Portland State would love to have him as their coach knows Kyle well and Oregon made some calls on him this spring. And Minnesota hasn't contacted me but their coaches have contacted and talked to Kyle." Coston has received offers from Eastern Washington and Washington State.
As a wing with great size, Coston has played and started on the varsity basketball team at Lynden since the first game of his freshmen season. Each year he continues to improve on the court as well as physically grow. "Kyle has great explosiveness as he likes to attack off the dribble," said coach Wolfiss. "He has a pretty nice stroke from three-point land. He is very athletic and he really peruses the basketball off the glass. Anybody going to the next level has to improve on their strength and Kyle has. Even though I say he's explosive that's for the high school game. I'm sure he would have to continue to develop his speed, agility, quickness and explosiveness. He would probably be better if he could work on shooting a number of reps in the gym and learning to shoot a better pull-up jumper.
This summer Kyle's playing with the Whatcom Hoops AAU club. "In Houston and in Maryland, Kyle had some really good AAU tournaments that impressed some college coaches and scouts," Vic said. "Oregon and Eastern Washington were among a couple of the schools who watched him in Houston (at the Kingwood)."
