Coston shoots at the Washington state tournament

OK this is a bigger picture than I Thought!!
June 21, 2005
Coston continues to impress

Kyle Coston from Lynden, Washington is a strong, athletic wing being recruited on the west coast. Coston, 6-foot-8 200 pounds, led his team to the state tournament this past year and then followed that up in the spring with a nice showing at the Kingwood Classic.

This past year at Lynden Christian, Kyle averaged 19 points, 8.5 rebounds and four assists a game. He shot 44 percent from the floor, 36 percent from three-point range and 74 percent from the free throw line. Coston led Lynden, who finished 21-6, to the Washington 2A State Tournament this year where he was named to the five member all-tournament first team and was sixth in scoring and second in rebounding. His team lost in the first round but won their last three games to fight back to grab fifth place in the 16 team tournament.

Schools looking at him consist of many of the Pac Ten schools and a majority of the West Coast Conference and the Big Sky Conference. "The team's that called the most this spring are Montana State, San Diego and San Diego State," said his coach at Lynden Vic Wolfiss. "During the season, Washington State, Washington and Portland State were the teams most interested. I know Portland State would love to have him as their coach knows Kyle well and Oregon made some calls on him this spring. And Minnesota hasn't contacted me but their coaches have contacted and talked to Kyle." Coston has received offers from Eastern Washington and Washington State.

As a wing with great size, Coston has played and started on the varsity basketball team at Lynden since the first game of his freshmen season. Each year he continues to improve on the court as well as physically grow. "Kyle has great explosiveness as he likes to attack off the dribble," said coach Wolfiss. "He has a pretty nice stroke from three-point land. He is very athletic and he really peruses the basketball off the glass. Anybody going to the next level has to improve on their strength and Kyle has. Even though I say he's explosive that's for the high school game. I'm sure he would have to continue to develop his speed, agility, quickness and explosiveness. He would probably be better if he could work on shooting a number of reps in the gym and learning to shoot a better pull-up jumper.

This summer Kyle's playing with the Whatcom Hoops AAU club. "In Houston and in Maryland, Kyle had some really good AAU tournaments that impressed some college coaches and scouts," Vic said. "Oregon and Eastern Washington were among a couple of the schools who watched him in Houston (at the Kingwood)."

I mentioned him earlier, but here is an update.

Found on the net:
Anybody recruiting a player named Gordon at Sheridan College is going to have to be a little bit more specific. Gordon Chase and Gordon Brown should provide a solid 1-2 punch for head coach Joel Davidson this season.

Some college coaches are still trying to track Brown down.
Chase, who goes by Gus, a nickname he got in part to separate himself from Brown who was a childhood friend, has already picked up two scholarship offers.

"He's got offers from Montana and Montana State, then Santa Barbara is probably third in line as far as showing the most interest," Davidson said. "He's had a lot of phone calls, but I'm not sure how serious they are. Most people want to see him in Tulsa."

Chase, rated the No. 29 prospect in the class by JucoJunction, will show off his skills at Jerry Mullen's event in Tulsa on July 29th and 30th. At 6-foot-4, some schools are wary of Chase as a power forward. However, he had 15 points and 15 rebounds against the College of Southern Idaho and averaged 29 and 15 rebounds in two games against Western Nebraska a season ago.

"He's just got a knack to score the basketball and rebound. He's 6-4, 245 and that's why a lot of people overlook him, he is a four man," Davidson said. "He really understands how to play, uses his body very well. He is very, very skilled, he can step out and shoot it."

Davidson said he thinks Chase could blossom into a higher level player than what he's being recruited as right now.

"I'm familiar with the Big Sky, because of our region, I've seen it for several years. If he went to a school in the Big Sky, he could be as successful, or close to as successful, as he is here," Davidson said. "I think he could go bigger, but it's one of those things, what are you caught up in? I think there's no question he could go higher, but I don't know if it's going to benefit him to go higher."

As for the other Gordon, Brown transferred to Sheridan from Coffeyville for this season.

"He's a very athletic wing, really really athletic," Davidson said. "He can really shoot the ball well. He had a good summer, he's working hard getting stronger. There's no question he'll be a mid-major player."

St. Bonaventure, Kent and Montana are among the schools showing the most interest in the Coffeyville tranfer right now.

Speaking of transfers, Sheridan's got another one who came to the program from Division One.

Jake Schmidt, who is 6-foot-8 and 240 pounds, played last season at the University of Utah. However, he was recruited to the Utes by Rick Majerus and opted to leave after not playing a major role with the new coaching staff.

"He can really shoot the ball and he's going to help us," Davidson said. "I think he will definitely go back to Division One, but I'm not sure at what level yet."

6-foot-9 Panola (TX) transfer Michael Taylor will also provide help in the frontcourt for Sheridan this season.

Found this on the net:
This kid is the starting point guard on the AAU team that features 6-9 Travis Derochowski who commited to the Bobcats this spring.
Davis The Latest With An Offer

It's halfway through the July evaluation period, and a number of Oregonians from the Class of 2006 are starting to receive serious first Division I love. You can add Cory Davis to the list of those who can now claim a full-ride offer. The quick 5-foot-10, 160-pound point guard from West Salem High School racked up his first one after some nice performances at a couple of camps down in Southern California, and he's hoping a strong showing in Las Vegas will lead to even more options.

"The camps were pretty good," Davis said. "West Coast Camp was good - I made the Best of the Best there. Pangos Camp was pretty good too - I was supposed to make the all-star team, but they messed up something with my name and somebody else's name. But I've just been hooping every day, just shooting and stuff."

Because of the way that Davis was able to show off his skills with his shooting, ball-handling, and floor leadership at the two camps, one school from the Big Sky Conference has made a step forward in his recruitment.

"I got offered by Montana State," Davis said. "I don't really know anything about them, but I'm definitely going to keep in contact with them. It feels good."

Davis noted that he's also been contacted recently by Portland State, Montana, Idaho, and Oregon State, and said that Portland Panthers AAU coach Reggie Guyton has gotten calls from schools such as USC and Boston College. He's keeping all of his options open right now, and is preparing to show more coaches his abilities in Vegas.

"I'm just waiting right now," Davis said. "I want to get my teammates involved, and play to my best ability. Hopefully, we'll get some wins."

A write up found else where"
......Complimenting Guyton will be a similar player in Cory Davis. Also 5-foot-10, the West Salem standout can contribute at either the point or at shooting guard, and Guyton envisions him seeing time at both spots for the Panthers. Quick off the dribble and a threat with his mid-range game, the offensive talents of Davis will be utilized as much as possible - and his ability to anticipate passes and plays on defense will be crucial to the Panthers' success as well.

"Cory is a tremendous scorer," Guyton. "I think he can score the basketball as well as anybody else in the state. His challenge will be when to score and when not to score."

When you're as skilled a basketball player as Kyle Coston, you're going to get looked at. That's exactly what college coaches did during the most recent evaluation period, as many tracked the 6-foot-8, 175-pound forward from Lynden Christian High School throughout the month of July, and a trio of schools have stepped up with scholarship offers. Coston has been happy with the way things have gone, but is still a ways away from making any decisions.

"Summer ball was good," Coston said. "It started off at Double Pump camp, where I played really well and I got named to the Top 20 in camp. A lot of college coaches were there watching. I then went to camp in Atlanta and also played well. Our team didn't do as well as we would have liked, but schools like Oregon and Eastern Washington came to a couple of practices."

"We then went to Vegas," he continued. "I popped my kneecap out, but even though I was hurt I still thought I played pretty well. We were in the 'B' open division (of the Big Time Tournament) and we lost in the semi-finals, so we made it pretty far."

Coston was also happy with the way he has been able to work on his game during the summer months. "I've definitely improved on the defensive end," Coston said. "I've also been doing a lot of explosion drills for my quickness and that has definitely gotten better too. I'm still working on my ability to play the two and three spots."

While he was in camp and at tournaments, Coston kept an open eye to what coaching staffs were at his games. In addition to Oregon and Eastern Washington, he also saw Gonzaga, Washington State, Portland, Portland State, Montana, and Montana State, among others, on the sidelines. So far, Eastern Washington, Portland State, and Montana State have seen enough to offer scholarships, but Coston is still undecided.

"I really haven't made a decision on where I want to go," Coston said. "I'm not really leaning any way or another. It's just hard to say because everyone is right there right now. If a good offer comes along, I'll take it, but I think I'm going to wait."

Coston indicated that it could be something where the school of his choice simply hits him. He's looking at several factors. "I'm looking at academics for sure," Coston said. "Also, the atmosphere of the school, as well as how I get along with the players and the coaches. What kind of ball do they run, because I like to run and gun. Also, is it a college town - do people come to the games. You always want to have fans."

Level of play will come under consideration as well, to some degree. "I've always wanted to play in the Pac-10, but I'll take whatever I can get," Coston said. "Coaches can call (this month), so when they call, I'll know who's the most interested. I'll see who calls."

Really Looks like Mick and company are hitting Oregon hard. The funny thing is that Montana is also heavily involved with quite a few Oregon player, but there are not that many player that are being recruited by both. BTW Washington and Arizona seem to be areas of interest for both schools. MSU seems to be mostly recruiting Highschooler. The only JC's seem to be some very highly rated JC players.
Chapman Has Interest
OregonPreps.com Staff
OregonPreps.com

Alex Chapman had fun this summer. The mobile 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward from Canby High School played big time basketball on the AAU circuit for the very first time, and it was an experience that he'll never forget. He's hoping that he impressed coaches enough to earn himself a Division I college scholarship, but it appears that he's willing to wait around for the right offer before making any sort of decision.

"The summer went well and I thought I did pretty good," Chapman said. "It gave me good exposure - it was a little hard getting it in hig school. We played in some big tournaments, and made it to the Elite Eight at the Big Time and that was great. And I think I got a little more aggressive, especially on rebounding. I didn't do a very good job during the high school season, but I did better (this summer)."

While summer AAU ball may be over, that hasn't stopped Chapman from continuing to work on his game in preparation for the 2005-06 season with Canby. He wants to refine both his inside and outside games.

"I'm still working on extending my shooting range a little more," Chapman said. "I also want to be more dominant in the post. I'll be playing at the four, but when my brother is out, I'll be playing at the five."

Given the exposure he got on the circuit, a couple of schools have been showing interest in Chapman. Montana State has gotten in touch with him the most, but he's also talked with Portland.

"Montana State - I like the coaches," Chapman said. "I've met (head) Coach (Mick) Durham and I've talked to (assistant) Coach Johnny Brown a few times. I like their staff. I know they're losing like two power forwards next year too. And U of P - they're close to home, so that definitely makes them high on the list."

Chapman likes both programs, but is remaining open. Like everyone else, he'd love the opportunity to play in the Pac-10, but is simply looking for the best situation for him.

"I'm looking for good academics and also a good basketball team," Chapman said. "Maybe a team that gets out and runs, because I like to run. It doesn't really matter how close to home it is, although it would be nice to be close."

Because of the limited number of schools showing interest in him at this point, Chapman is leaning towards waiting until the spring before making a decision. A strong senior year will undoubtedly help his recruitment, and he's looking forwards to it.

"We've got three starters back, my brother got better, and the team did good in summer ball," Chapman said. "I think we'll do well this year."

A little more on Alex Chapman.
A more "domestic" sleeper is Canby High School product Alex Chapman. The 6-foot-8 junior forward played mainly in the post for the Cougars during his first year on the varsity squad, but on the Panthers he'll get the opportunity to play on the perimeter as Guyton has the size down low to give Chapman that chance. He shoots the ball well out to three-point range, and his ability to finish at the rim reminds Guyton of one of last year's standouts, fellow Canby product Casey Reed.

Basketball recruiting is heating up. Chase is a top 25 jc player. He is a 6-4 power forward from the school who produced Kamar Davis. He is said to be a Kamar clone.

The Chase heats up for Sheridan shooter

Chase is now up to four offers
Rumors started to circulate this week that Chase had committed to Montana State. However, JucoJunction spoke with his coach on Thursday and the coach denied those rumors.

"Gus has not committed anywhere," said Joel Davidson. "That might have been wishful thinking."

Chase, the No. 29 preseason prospect in the country according to JucoJunction, impressed with his play at the Mullens' All-Star Review in Tulsa last weekend.

"He played well," Davidson said. "People like what he does around the block. He's not going to go through anybody down there, but what separates him is he can go and get it if he misses. That's what a lot of people liked is how he can rebound offensively."

The Grizzlies are certainly one of the teams in the running for Chase's services, and they may even be the leader at this point.

"Montana has actually been on him the longest," Davidson said. "Montana, Montana State and Texas Pan-American have offered. Then Liberty offered after they saw him play in Tulsa."

While Chase has not made a commitment yet, he could very well be an early signee.

"He is at home until the 19th," Davidson reported. "He'll come back and that first weekend, we'll sit down and talk about it, decide on some visits. He'll probably take two or three official visits this fall."

When the news does break on Chase, JucoJunction will have the scoop for you.

Do you think we are heavily pursuing this guy? If we land him does this mean some of the new guys will be redshirted?

We are looking to sign for the 2006-07 season as insde help for when Moss Beye and Pratt leave. He will play for Sheridan this coming season. As far as I know he and Owsley are the only JC kids we have offered so far, and I am not that sure we have even offer Owsley. The staff really want to sign him I am told.

A few basketball tid bits I picked over the last week from talking with some people. These little chunks come from multiple sources and with varing degrees of reliablity.

- It sounds like Durham and company are taking a wait and see additiude toward recruiting PJ Owsley. I hear from one source that the coaching staff is a little gun shy after offering him twice, getting an commitment twice and then he backs out (this from a Durham / program side) or The coaching staff is still not sure his injury has healed properly and don't want to be stuck with an injured recruit (Owsley side)

- Gordon Chase the 6-4 power forward from Sheridan College visited MSU in late June along with team mate Gordon Brown a 6-4 guard who is also being recruited by numerous D-1 teams.

- Durham and company are definately looking to sign a JC big man for the 2006-07 year. Two other names other than Owsley and Chase are Nathan Lang 6'7" Frank Phillips JC (TX), and Calvin Walls 6'8" Iowa Western JC. Phillips does not sound that exiting. Averaged under 5 pts. and rbs last year, but has had a good summer. I hear Durham likes his athletisism , but Johnny Brown is not that excited about him. Walls signed with Wichita State out of Minnesota a few years back. He played as a true freshman averaging about 2 pts and 2 rbs 2 year back and redshirted last year before transfering to Iowa Western. Out of Highschool he was a high scoring center power player rate as a 3 Star player by most services. He could play pf or center.

- Despite what Durham said at the Golf tourney another source who has seen the team work out over the summer said there is "no way" both of the Johnson freshman recruits will be redshirted. It would be nice , but they are playing too good. "One maybe but not both"

Found on the net:
I-S senior Austen Lane reaching new heights
Marlin Lee
WisconsinPreps.com

Lane will lead the Thunderbird on the gridiron and the hrdwood floor.
Senior Austen Lane (6-foot-7, 210-pounds) is a standout on both the football field and basketball court for Iola-Scandinavia. In football he is a star wide receiver, and in basketball he's a top center/power forward. WisconsinPreps.com recently had a chance to speak with Lane, and find out what schools are recruiting him in either sport.

In basketball Lane is ranked as the #38 player in the class of 2006 by WBBY. Last year he was named 2nd team all-conference, and helped lead Iola-Scandinavia to a share of the CWC-Small conference title and an 18-4 record. He is also a member of the Wisconsin Swing AAU team.

In football Lane was recently named one of the top 20 wide receivers in the state in the Wisfootball.net Gridiron Guide.

A number of D2 and D3 schools stay in contact with Lane for both football and basketball. "Ausburg and Winona State call me for football. North Dakota State, UW-Platteville, UW-Eau Claire, North Florida, and Luther do for basketball," Lane said. "I get hand written letters from Luther, Ripon, and Montana State for basketball, and Wisconsin, Gustavus Adolphus, South Dakota, Minnesota-Duluth, and Minnesota-Moorhead for football."

The list of schools requesting Lane take an unofficial visit to their campus is a mile long. Some of the major schools included are: North Dakota, Bemidji State, St. Cloud State, Northern Michigan, Michigan Tech, and Nebraska-Omaha.

"I attended the UW-Madison Badger Camp, and participated in the Midwest and Midwest Elite Combines," Lane said of his summer schedule. "Living in a small town with little exposure, I felt I needed to do as much as possible to get my name out there."

So far Lane does not have a scholarship offer for either sport, but he lists his favorite as "UW-Madison."

Lane said, "My summer has been good and very busy. I am working on speed, routes, and footwork, and I also play summer basketball for the Wisconsin Swing."

At the Midwest High School Combine Lane was ranked as the #4 wide receiver in attendance. There he ran a 4.92/40 (electronic). He also measured a 81.25 inch reach. Some of his most impressive numbers came in the jumping tests. He had a 31.5 inch vertical and a 127.5 inch broad jump. He bench pressed 155 pounds 16 times.

Here is an update on Paul Noonan a 6-6 sf out of Oregon. From what I hear I think he could be a real nice player for us. Montana has been recruiting him also, but it appears they have dropped off his list.
Noonan Ready To Travel
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paul Noonan has three official visits coming up
September is going to be a very busy month for Paul Noonan. Sure, the lanky 6-foot-6, 175-pound wing from Beaverton High School will getting up to speed with the start of his senior year and starting to prepare himself for basketball season. But Noonan is going to be using a lot of time with his college recruitment, hosting college coaches at his home and flying off to see college campuses as well. It's an exciting time for him, and he's ready to get things going.

"I've set up visits with Boise State, Eastern Washington, and Montana State," Noonan said. "I'm going to Eastern on the 17th, and then Boise State the week after that on the Wednesday and Thursday (21st and 22nd). Then it's Montana State on the 21st. I'll probably take a visit to Northern Arizona as well, but that hasn't been set up yet."

In addition to these official visits, a number of schools will also be giving the Noonan household an in-home visit as well. Noonan indicated that all the schools he's visiting will be coming in, as well as Portland State and Portland. Schools like Montana State and Northern Arizona have shown increased interest as of late, but Noonan's offers remain at three - EWU, BSU, and PSU. He's established some favorites.

"I really like the schools that I'm going to visit - those are probably my top three right now," Noonan said. "I like the programs and the coaches, and they all seem like they could be a good fit."

Noonan, who continues to main that he'd like to stay in the Pacific Northwest, is looking forwards to all his visits. Look for him to make a choice in the fall signing period.

"I plan on taking all three before making a decision," Noonan said. "I'm looking for a great coaching staff and I want to see how I interact with the players. I want to get a good look at the campuses too."

A little more info on Devon Beitzel. Like i said before he has already scored over 1000 points in Colorado. Last year he averaged 21 points and 6.5 rebounds for his 4A highschool. Durring the a summer AAU tournement playing on a team with some of the best Colorado Highschoolers he let the tourney in scoring and had a tourney high game 45 points.
