Why No Beer

Post by BozCatFan » Sat Oct 21, 2006 8:34 pm

I know that this idea might get me in big trouble, but I wonder why beer is not served at the games.

It seems to me that doing so might help cover some of the athletic department debt.

Many other colleges serve beer at games, think perhaps it is time to revisit this.

Well I think the easy answer is that Barechest, myselft, and a couple of buddies have not missed a game in about five years.

Probably though, serving beer at a game would create an image problem for the university, if not a huge liability.

If these two factors were missing, my first step would be to propose bringing back the CNFR...(lost partially due to the "no chew" distribution). Bringing back the rodeo and selling beer, and our stadium would look like the Taj Mahal!

Is there some kind of law against on campus stadiums serving beer? I don't want to sound like a raging alcoholic but it would be nice to drink a few in the stadium. It might also help bring in those partiers that stay in the tailgate and never set foot in the stadium for the game.

They serve beer a lot of places and it doesn't seem to be a problem.

Bring back CNFR! That would be great too.

We serve beer at the Griz games.

Are you sure? If so did this just go into effect this year? Last year at PSU they served beer.

They served beer at Eastern WA this year.

We don't serve beer in the stadium, but you can buy all the beer you want at the tailgate party.

To take into the stadium? Of course that would take away some of the satisfaction of sneaking it in.

I don't think PSU gets a say in the matter, since they don't run the stadium.

Campus policy is no alcohol allowed, I think. The only exception is in the SUB ballrooms, when alcohol is served with CMS on site to prevent alcohol from leaving the room.

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

I don't think PSU's stadium is even considered on campus. But you're right, I think that's a minor league baseball stadium that PSU gets to use. I went to the first round of the NCAA basketball tourney in Sacramento a few years back when Montana played Oregon and you couldn't even buy beer at Arco Arena for that game. They even had all the beer signs covered up.

Beg to differ. MSU is a wet campus. The regulation that we have is a no keg rule. I know this from fraternity events. The requirements when you serve alcohol is first to have a third party vendor, and second a security rented service to govern minors not getting booze.

Same with this year at the Griz/PSU game.

1973 was the first year Reno H. Sales stadium was used. The rule was no glass. Milk jugs were used to bring in wine, schnapps, ect. The stadium was packed and there were no real problems.

"Whether the NCAA would, or legally could, dictate that restriction to schools is uncertain. The association prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages only at championship events. More than a quarter of I-A schools responding to a 2003 survey indicated they allowed sales at their own events. Of those, well more than half permitted sales at an on-campus venue."

This is a University decision some may remember we use to get the College National Finals Rodeo until Malone refused to let them have tobacco sponsors sell chew at the Rodeo and alcohol as well. We lost the rodeo after that he said it was a violation of the NCAA but it was he thought bad for the University's image.

At the time I thought it was a good decision Malone made, but now, I doubt if it would change our image anywhere
