i thought it would be interesting to compare defenses over the same four opponents that the Cats and griz have played this year (eastern, nau, psu and sac st) - given this "key" stat discussion. the following is what i came up with from box scores (averages over the four games) - DEFENSE stats only:
Rushing Against:
Cats: 80.0 yds/game
griz: 90.5 yds/game
Passing Against:
Cats: 148.3 yds/game
griz: 158.0 yds/game
Total Against:
Cats: 228.3 yds/game
griz: 248.5 yds/game
Points Against:
Cats: 17.0 points/game
griz: 18.0 points/game
*this doesn't include any "yeah but" factors or home vs. away - just simple totals and averages.
i report, you decide.....

While it may seem as apples to apples, it isn't. You get Sawyer Smith on a sloppy field and on his first game back. We play PSU at home on crappy turf with a 1-A drop down who replaced the ineffiecent starter. Besides, we are not far from playing it out where it really matters, on the field.

sounds like an excuse (as I mentioned, didn't factor in excuses - even the poor ones at that) . . . looking forward to the game (just like last year when folks argued about who had the best d).While it may seem as apples to apples, it isn't. I am not making excuses, just pointing out to you that your comparisions are inaccurate. I could throw on the NAU stats here, and make a point of having the best defense based upon how well the numbers looked vs the Cats. But it just wouldn't be accurate.MSU Toddler wrote:sounds like an excuse (as I mentioned, didn't factor in excuses - even the poor ones at that) . . . looking forward to the game (just like last year when folks argued about who had the best d).While it may seem as apples to apples, it isn't. What does matter is that it looks like November 18th will determine if the Griz are champions or co-champions. But, we have to get past ISU next week, and not lose focus against UNC. Also, throw in a game against a very good Cal Poly team.

please reread - these stats include all four games againts the same opponents NAU, Eastern WA, Sac St and PSU.I am not making excuses, just pointing out to you that your comparisions are inaccurate. there is nothing in your comments about muddy field, drop down quarter back, etc BUT excuses. i didn't say anything about the Cats being on the road or the injuries during those games or the fact that psu had its #1 back (vs. a drop down who only was with the team 5 days before playing against the griz - is that an advantage or disadvantage?). did you know that White played against the Cats too and was ineffective? this is as close to apples to apples as you can get.
hard to argue the facts when emotion is involved.

Don't let the facts get in the way of your arguement. I was merely pointing out that on its face, it may seem as apples to apples but they really aren't due to a number of reasons. Right now the only stat that really matters to me is 5-0 and 4-1. Because all of this banter is moot in regards to who leads the Big Sky, but it just fun for us fans.MSU Toddler wrote:please reread - these stats include all four games againts the same opponents NAU, Eastern WA, Sac St and PSU.I am not making excuses, just pointing out to you that your comparisions are inaccurate. i would agree, but then why start a post based on nonsense stats? it is you who posted all the D stuff isn't it? just thought we were talking stats.Right now the only stat that really matters to me is 5-0 and 4-1.

by the way, the flurry of posts on BN by griz fans on these sorts of things only demonstrates one thing to me - concern about the Cats. otherwise i'm at a loss why a griz fan would spend some much time and effort on BN to "discount" the Cats. no smack intended, but i find that as a compliment to the Cats - so thank you. please continue and i hope that griz continue to win/pile up stats/lead categories/underestimate the Cats.
if both team "show up" on nov. 18, it will be an excellent game.

Well, first you would have to be an idiot to discount the Cats. Second, my post was in response to others who either came to egriz or posted about the Griz defense not being statistically the best in the Big Sky. So, while enjoying a rare day without small children underfoot, I obtained the current stats and posted them here. While not a frequent poster, I have been around for awhile. And find that here, just as on egriz, the fans give me a laugh. While I don't profess to be an expert, I can assure you that I played more football the the majority of folks on these boards. And just like with a newspaper, there is what is reported and what really went on. And while what is reported may be a reasonable facsimile to what really happened, it just isn't the same. For obvious reasons, I do not put on any board some of the things I hear, because they were not meant for this venue and what little nuggets I do get, would soon be gone if they became public. And no, I don't have a red phone to Bobby's office.
Again, back to the stats. My point is while it is fun to take out non-conferece opponets to compare against another team, it just isn't valid. I'm not huge into stats because so much is different week to week and venue to venue. That is why I said the only true stat that matters is 5-0 and 4-1. Now can we hug and be friends?

This is a really lame way to try to spin stats. We played both ISU and NAU on the carpet on their own fields. Neither team would put up anywhere near those kinds of numbers in Bozeman. If the fiz would have played those two games away and had PSU at home the defensive numbers would be quite a bit different.Born2BaGriz wrote:MSU Toddler wrote:careful - see above - must be that "new" math they teach at um working for you.....eh?If you can't figure that out, you must have gone to MSU-B.

I can’t wait until Cat/griz weekend.

sure i'll hug (not that there's anything wrong with that). i understand your frustration with the drive slinging of mud by um....let's call them fans-from-the-other-team.Again, back to the stats. by the way (recognize the source - noncollege football player), i would think if you were counting on the Cats to play up to their entire year's statistics - you'd be in trouble. just my impression. but as i've said before, i hope the griz continue to overlook the Cats --- it has worked out well lately.
hug
