Depends on if you became a fan before you got out of HS (see #1). If not then you're probably a bandwaggoner. Since you just started being a griz fan in the last "decade or two" then you're the very definition of a bandwagon fan. You're the reason this thread started. Congrats.Eastcoastgriz wrote:Really???? What if you never attended collage and didnt meet your criteria for #2 and 3 above and have been a loyal fan for say a decade or two, You're still a bandwagon fan?crazycat wrote:It’s easier to define what isn’t a bandwagon fan and there are only three ways to not be one:

3) I exception can be made in rare cases and that’s if you have a close family member brother, dad, or son that gets a scholarship to a different school and you root for blood. This isn’t a real solid excuse, but I let it slide. I think you should still root for YOUR school.
Anything else is a bandwagon fan.

Just so I know, because I don't know for sure, but just how popular is NASCAR? And who watches formula1? That is right. Better product. The only time I was missed GRIZ/CAT was in 2002. We went to a bar and watched it and there were some cat fans there. Nobody whined, nobody was snotty, there were no fights just two rival teams' fans watching the BRAWL OF THE WILD. And that was it.
And since when do you have to be from the state of the team, or go to the school of the team to root for them? I have never been to Cincinnati yet I have been rooting for the Bengals for as long as I can remember. I guess I am a bandwagon fan. SO doesn't that make most, anybody who roots for a school outside of Montana a bandwagon fan?

GL, for a Griz you seem to find a way to keep things in perspetive. Hate to say it but GOOD POST!Grizlaw wrote:Well...not to be a smartass, but you could pretty much say that about any piece of smack talk, right?lifeloyalsigmsu wrote:Why do you guys care whether we call a huge percentage of griz fans bandwagon? Honestly, if you don't consider yourself as such (then again, I can't imagine any bandwagon fan would ever acknowledge they were as such), then why create a thread?
To give an equivalent example: why does it bother Cat fans when Griz fans say that Cat fans only care about one game per year? After all, if you know that you care about more than that, then why start threads to talk about it?
I guess to me, the answer is that none of this matters in any real way, but it's fun, so we keep doing it. Some people take it too seriously, which is too bad; it should all be in good fun.
So please, keep the "bandwagon" and "sugar daddy" posts coming; they don't bother me personally, but the rivalry wouldn't be much fun otherwise.

Did you just fail to read my post, or are you incapable? I addressed why I posted the original question above: Simply, I don't know anyone who considers it worthy smack, so I was curious why cat fans bring it up in every freakin' thread on this board.lifeloyalsigmsu wrote:"A ridiculous, inane attempt at smack."GrizinWashington wrote:Loyal, by your reasoning, there should always be and have been at least 12,000 fans at MSU games. Clearly that wasn't the case a few years back. Hell, it hasn't even been the case this YEAR (I watched the UCD game. I know what the announced attendance was, but they must have been counting students in the dorms).
As I've said earlier, it's a ridiculous, inane attempt at smack. And because of that, it doesn't bother me in the least, which is what prompted my question to begin with. I guess I just expected you guys to come up with something that DOES bother Griz fans. Just thought you were better than that.
Signed,
GrizInWashington, the author of this thread who is trying to convince us that it doesn't bother him in the least.
If it didn't bother you, why DID you initiate a thread (on the MSU board, at that) about the very topic you seem to be so "indifferent" to?
You're quite the contradiction.....
I gave you my reasoning and I believe my points are pretty spot on and they're based on legitimate observations as well as more than a few trips to Wa-Griz stadium.

Anyways, who died and decieded that any of you were capable of coming up with the definition of a "bandwagon." Its very quite simple what a bandwagon is, it is the fan that only goes for the winning team. There are no rules behind this or regulations. There is no convention that people go to and find out if they are a true fan or a bandwagon fan. Some people are Griz fans, and other are Cat fans. After the Griz fans got good, all the people that didnt care about football, all of a sudden got some tickets and bought a Grizzly sweatshirt. I would highly doubt that those kind of people would be on a message board bantering about Cat/Griz. Those are the kind of people that dont really care about sports, but like to have a good time on saturday at Wa-Griz. I would garuntee that after 0-11, people did the same thing in Bozeman.
Example of a bandwagon fan:
You like every team that wins the super bowl.
Example of a another bandwagon fan:
You like every team that wins the world series.
Must I go on?
I have come believe that people on these message boards are not the bandwagon fans, and in 1-AA I would doubt that there are any bandwagon fans to begin with. The fans you speak of, as stated before, are the ones that dont have anything to do on saturday, and since its the cool thing to do in missoula, go to Griz games and/or Cat games.
My point being is that if you are a message board member, that you are probably not a Bandwagon fan. I realize Cat fans say it so they can feel better about getting blown out by 45 at home but as a Griz fan I respect that. I know ive been A griz fan since 96, but I was only 6 then...I think I get a pass on being a bandwagon fan.
+ Im a raider fan, watch them every weekend

I think all college sports fans can be grouped into either one of the two categories.
1) A true fan who supports their school/team through both wins and losses; is knowledgeable about the sport being played, the players, and the coaches; wears their school/team colors proudly even during losing/off seasons; and willing to sacrifice both time and money to help better the athletic program…I could go on.
2) A fair weather fan who only shows school/team spirit when their team is winning and when it's the popular thing to do; knows very little about the sport being played or even the players or coaches for that matter; conveniently brings out the school/team colors when their team is winning, and is usually done so just to show others around them that they are rooting for a winning team, possible to make themselves feel like they are a part of something big and successful; and feel that the have no responsibility in helping to better the program.
Which category do you fall under? Are there more than the two I’ve listed?

Bandwagon fans eh?
I grew up in Montana and graduated from MSU. However, I use to attend UM games at the old Dornblaser Field back in the 70’s. I rooted for the grizzlies for years. I was thrilled to death when they won their first national championship in 1995. After that my support for them declined sharply when there fan base swelled. Most of them got on their high horse and began badmouthing the bobcats. I ate a ton of crap during that 16 year Cat/Griz loosing streak from all sorts of people who had never even been to a griz game prior to 1995. As stated here before most of the fan base had never stepped foot on the UM campus or gave a crap about UM football prior to 1995. My own brother is a typical pukey griz fan. He was a Steelers fan in the 70’s a 49er fan in the eighties a cowboy fan in the 90’s and now is of coarse a huge griz fan. He’s always walking around in his maroon and silver costume.
My biggest fear is when the cats keep kickin' there butts and win another national championship that we will end up with all there pukey fans.

Many Cat fans think a large portion of griz fans are a bunch of bandwagon fans and on more than one occasion, Cat fans on this thread have given their reasons. You simply received what you asked for in terms of reasons. If you don't like them, don't read 'em. Besides don't you have "17" straight wins clogging up your gray matter anyway?

Re: Bandwagon
The simple way to calculate this will be when the griz have a losing season. The number of direct bandwagon fans will be equal to the number of empty seats in the stadium. The indirect bandwagon fans calculation is more difficult, but it might be directly proportional to the number of new hunters in the woods plus the number of new attendees at a Cats home game.GrizinWashington wrote:Okay, I really don't mean to be an arse here, but would someone please explain to me why so many on this board perceive Griz fans to be "bandwagon" fans. The stadium will still be packed. The Griz will be playing and the fans will be filling the tailgates and the stands.
