While our offense seems to be coming around some now I think this team can really take a step up some more by improving on the stat above. The really good defenses are averaging in the 27-28 range which makes it VERY TOUGH for an offense to put together long drives down the field. This makes it a long day for our defense when we don't get the other team off the field. We ran some 5 DB sets last week so maybe this could help us when we are playing on 3rd down the rest of the way. We definately need to improve on this statistic and it really happens on first down. Teams that win on first down defensively are the ones that that have good 3rd down stopping percentages. Need it in 3rd and long! Anyway, this is one of the main stats that is keeping our team sputtering a little on defense and to some extent on offense scoring points (D not getting the other team off the field).

ANy idea what the stats are for the two games we won vs. the 3 we lost. Wouldl be interesting to see the comparison.

Could be hard to find?? MSU never has any detail box scores really you can pull that off of besides just taking status watching the game

Would be interesting to see though if that is indeed making a huge difference etc?

This doesn't include third down percentage as a stat, but I found this page while looking for this and wanted to pass it along. Great stats page from the NCAA.

I thought the key stat was going to be turnovers. We are +1 in our victories, and just horrid in our losses.

Colorado 5/14
Chadron 6/14
UC-Davis 12/18
EWU 7/15
NAU 6/14

Win 3rd down %
11/28 = 39%

Loss 3rd dwon %
25/47 = 53%

The numbers are going to be a little skewed with the awful performance against UC-Davis. If you take them out, it's 13/29 in 3rd down defense for 45% which isn't all that different from our winning numbers. The defense just hasn't done well in 3rd down defense period. If we could start to limit the opponents it will not only help our defense rest more, but increase the offense's learning curve and increase our odds of scoring more. Not to take away from what Carp did this weekend, but we all know that Cory still needs more reps to get comfortable. Even if I still like Rolo more, but that's not my choice. I better go before I get off topic.

Also, I got these stats from ESPN.com. They have pretty much everything you'd want from game to game, except individual defensive stats.
