Portal question- Does it Help or Hurt us more?

I guess I have a different opinion. For most FCS programs (including MSU), I would say the portal hurts. We've obviously gained good players through the portal, but we gained good drop down transfers before the portal exists (Junior Adams, Michael Jefferson, Sterk, etc).

That said, we have the resources to hold on to a few more players than most other FCS schools, so I guess technically it is a net gain for us in the FCS.

Also, I really don't want to go down the road of UM (and many other schools) where I have to learn a brand new roster of new faces every single year.

I'm not a fan, and I think it definitely hurts.

Something I've been thinking about- overall, does the current landscape with all the portal craziness Help or Hurt the cats more?

cuz we have seen huge examples on both sides. Plenty of big players leaving (which I'm pretty blunt about my feelings, ha)... but some all time greats coming in as well. So has the portal been better or worse for our programs success???

-Blake Glessner (this one was a HUGE factor that following season, cost us games and a potential playoff run)
-Omar Agbedion (or however you spell it)

-Scottre Humphrey
-Rohan Jones (both an addition and a loss)
-and whoever we lose this year.

-Lamson (I mean.... holy crap, might go down as the best QB in program history)

-Ty McCullough
-Chris Long
-Alec Eckert
-Amandre Williams
-Bryce Sterk
-Clevan Thomas
-Bryant Meredith
-Rohan Jones (both an addition and a loss)

Thoughts? are we better off from the portal? worse from it? is it just a wash?....

Most of the guys you mention are drop down. We always have gotten some of them. What the portal has down is let our good ones get poached, mostly by fbs. They used to have to sit out a year, now if they are good they get the calls, nothing to keep them.

It's hard to argue anything is hurting as at the moment, we've been in the NC 3 of the last 5 years and just won the damn thing this week.

It seems like it should and does hurt us but we always seem to have solutions for it. #VigenForPresident

The portal is meant to be a positive for the players, not the program.

How your staff deals with the portal reality is the key. Our staff has done as good a job as any, so relative to other FCS programs, the portal has been positive for our program … in context.
