Strength of schedule polls vs getting good
I see a lot of discussion about SOS and how it plays into the polls and selection committee, which is all good.
What I think is also important about schedule strength is how it preps you for the season and playoffs. I'm off the opinion that steel sharpens steel, but I don't think you want to overdo it. If MSU wins the next three, it's all good, but a loss will mean it probably messed up by scheduling, if the Bobcats get dropped to No. 6 or something.
The schedule sets up good for MSU as it'll play WSU, then UCD, then UM in a graduated schedule in terms of strength of opponent. MSU playing Oregon and SDSU early probably helped more than hurt in that those games exposed areas where MSU needed work.

MSU - 17 team National Champions (most recent 2025); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

I think MSU did a great job of setting up its non-conference schedule this year. FBS game to earn some money that doesn't hurt you at all when you lose it, one challenging FCS opponent to test yourself and get experience playing that level of team, and then the last two games used to bank easy D-1 wins against lower level competition. If MSU ends up 9-3 and the #6 seed it will be a bummer for the team and fans to only get one guaranteed home playoff game, but they will still have a great shot at advancing deep into the playoffs especially if that #3 seed ends up being someone like Tarleton, Tennessee Tech, or Lehigh.TomCat88 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 03, 2025 10:28 amI see a lot of discussion about SOS and how it plays into the polls and selection committee, which is all good.

I also think playing UCD a week before UM is advantageous, assuming MSU wins. Playing someone with a good offense might help prep the defense for the UM offense, and future playoff teams. Won't be the same exactly since MSU's defense has the added benefit of fan noise disrupting UCD's offense.

Speaking of noise, this is an area where I think the IPF comes in really handy.TomCat88 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 04, 2025 8:10 amI also think playing UCD a week before UM is advantageous, assuming MSU wins. They can presumably make it as loud, or even louder, in there since it’s all enclosed. Never been able to do that before. Who knows if it will help, but it certainly won’t hurt.

And UM on the other hand, travels to Oregon to play one of the worst teams in the country. That's after playing a terrible EWU team at home. I'm glad they have to travel to Portland though... and I think this game is actually being played in PGE Park downtown. Perhaps a little extra juice for PSU to make it interesting for a few minutes in the first quarter, lolTomCat88 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 04, 2025 8:10 amI also think playing UCD a week before UM is advantageous, assuming MSU wins. PSU did just beat Cal Poly who the Griz struggled with, so who knows maybe it will be a competitive game. It doesn't seem like Cal Poly is just rolling over like Weber State.catatac wrote: ↑Tue Nov 04, 2025 12:18 pmAnd UM on the other hand, travels to Oregon to play one of the worst teams in the country. Barney wouldn't do that to Bobby.BOBCATBORN wrote: ↑Tue Nov 04, 2025 1:32 pmPSU did just beat Cal Poly who the Griz struggled with, so who knows maybe it will be a competitive game. TOTALLY! It's like Talladega Nights when Cal asked Ricky if he could maybe win a race once... but if you win, then how would I win too? Then Bobby gives Barney a nuggie and they hug it out.tetoncat wrote: ↑Tue Nov 04, 2025 1:40 pmBarney wouldn't do that to Bobby.BOBCATBORN wrote: ↑Tue Nov 04, 2025 1:32 pmPSU did just beat Cal Poly who the Griz struggled with, so who knows maybe it will be a competitive game.
