Tied with Isaiah Ifanse for most career 100 yard games with 17 but holds the record over Ifanse for career 200 yard games with 5 (he had three in 2001). What blows me away about Ryan Johnson is he did that behind an offensive line that was not as highly rated as our OL for the last few years. Gilman seems to be doing that now for the Gris. It makes me wonder though. What’s more important for the RB numbers, his will or his OL?

Barry Sanders is (I think pretty clearly, with the possible exception of Jim Brown) the best RB of all time. The MSU Don Joy Mafia has 5 or 6 guys that would start for the Detroit Lions OL that blocked for Sanders...he averaged 5.0 ypc (3rd all time behind Nick Chubb and Jim Brown) behind a bunch of traffic cones. They were Gawd awful terrible. Sanders retired after 9 or 10 seasons.

Emmitt Smith, the all time leading rusher-had a GREAT O-line. Nicknamed the Great Wall of Dallas. He averaged 4.2 ypc. Won 3 Super Bowls. Barry Sanders won ONE playoff game.

And, lets be clear, the game has changed significantly in the last 25 years, Emmitt Smith and Barry Sanders would no longer be the blue chip prospects they were...the value of RBs has declined significantly in the pros and QBs are a huge part of the college running game, so comparisons are a bit weird.

All that said, great individual talents like Ryan Johnson or Barry Sanders can thrive without great offensive lines. But a great offensive line can turn a mediocre RB into an all Pro or all Conference.

Look at Denver with Terrell Davis. They figured he was the greatest ever. Got hurt and no loss of rushing. I agree, greT lines make good backs great.

My sense would be the OL is the biggest factor of a runners success. Floyd little however would be a strong argument for heart.

Very encouraged with what I'm seeing from the OL now that these starters are settled. You saw it against Idaho State but Cal Poly had better interior players in my opinion. I just like how we are moving the line and getting to the second level. We really struggled with the "unblocked defender" in the first four games. When you run a zone scheme, unblocked situations will happen but are they happening 5 yards down the line or in the backfield/LOS? The CP game proved we are getting to that second level and getting defenders off their spots....and we are now getting to our spots (another big struggle early). 19 of our 50 rushes when for 3 yards or less (and that includes two sacks and two kneel downs) at a 38% clip. On the flip side, we had 31 runs go for 4 yards or more for a 62% clip which is a very encouraging ratio. On those 31 carries, we averaged 9.2 YPC. Finished the day with 5.8 YPC and if you eliminate the sacks and kneel downs that number is 6.7 YPC.

Despite early season struggles and a tough first two games, we are currently the #2 rushing offense by .2 yards less than Sac State (we are at 233.8 yards per game) and we currently have the best YPC average at 5.6. Montana is #3 at 182.8 yards per game and 5th at YPC at 4.7. We are third in rushing touchdowns at 20 and Montana leads the pack at 25.

Also should mention we have the #1 run defense by 42.9 yards. #2 is Idaho and #3 is Montana.
