RTDB?
We're halfway through the season (how did that happen?) and we still haven't had a 100 yard rusher yet or a 300 yard team total game.
The closest we've come is Lamson's 96 yard effort against SDSU that included 3 sacks to pull him back below the century mark. Besides that Davis has games of 83 and 76 but nobody else has even reached 75 yards. We're clearly a different offense due to Sterbick calling plays and our OL strength being pass blocking over run blocking but it's shocking that besides the EWU shellacking the next best rushing game was 233 against Mercyhurst.
When do you think we'll eclipse either of the 100/300 marks?
Is this the new way to beat the XDSUs?

Good question. Probably not this weekend. ISU is good against the run.coloradocat wrote: ↑Mon Oct 06, 2025 11:21 amWe're halfway through the season (how did that happen?) and we still haven't had a 100 yard rusher yet or a 300 yard team total game.

Re: RTDB?
It’s interesting to compare to NDSU here. I’ve heard (from one of Colter’s podcasts) that NDSU throws the ball so much better than we have (the last few years) but they seem to be able to run A gap power at will. Even though when they do run, it’s usually A gap power. I want to believe we can get there. We have to be able to trust the ground game, particularly in short yardage situations against the better teams.
Side note: the Youngstown State team’s offense reminded me of the Cats last year. Their quarterback was fun to watch in that game.

Re: RTDB?
I had written this under the “Injury updates” earlier:
“I feel like the receiver picture may be starting to come into focus for Sterbick now. Taco is, well, Taco. Total Swiss Army knife. Woods and Steel are suddenly showing out and seem to be very versatile and reliable, they catch whatever comes their way most of the time and are both a legit threat on every route they run. King is the X-factor to me. He seems like the deep ball down the sideline 50-50 guy, but does not appear to be the tight spaces type of player.
I feel like Steel and Woods are starting to take some defensive attention and pressure off of Taco since they are both major receiving threats and it’s opening up the passing game for everyone. For Sterbick, having several home run types on the field at the same time has to create opportunity and an ideal situation.
A quarterback who seems to be improving with each game, 3-4 dangerous receivers, and multiple great running backs are going to be hard to defend for any defense.”
The Cat run game has been solid, not spectacular. You can argue it’s improved over through the season as the O-line settles, but I worry that a team that takes away the Cat’s passing game may have the upper hand when our running game isn’t able to step up and be dominating like the past few years. I feel like the Cats NEED to run on a slightly higher level to be more balanced and be truly top tier dominant with the DSU’s.

Julius Davis - 51 carries for 327 yards (6.4 ypc)
Adam Jones - 59 carries for 242 yards (4.1 ypc)
Colson Coon - 21 carries for 183 yards (8.7 ypc)
Jared White - 19 carries for 88 yards (4.6 ypc)
George Helms - 2 carries for 10 yards (5 ypc)
Last year our RBs finished the season at a collective 6.35 ypc so we aren't that far off from the productivity of last season. The difference obviously is Tommy who averaged over 8 ypc his final two seasons at MSU. Lamson is currently at 3.5 which is just fine for a normal QB.

I've decided I'm going to keep this thread going with the addition of a random RB's career YPC.
2013-2016 Chad Newell - 5.11 ypc (2076 rushing yards on 406 totes)
Also...who misses watching Chad play football am I right? I still remember that awful Southern Utah loss at home where Ash rolled out a severely hobbled Cody Kirk for 3.5 quarters and then we damn near won the game with Chad being electric off the bench as a freshman. 2013 was such a sad year.
All-Time great photo:

Why did Rob Ash get fired? These two played in ONE playoff game: 2014 against SDSU in the blizzard and Prukop on one leg.

Re: RTDB?
Yeah its getting kind of ridiculous at this point. Adam "between the tackles" has been one of our least productive offensive plays this season and its not going to get any better with loaded boxes. He struggles to make that first defender miss where Julius can make that strong first cut to shake a safety or linebacker. Colson just explodes through the line which means he'll make defenders miss due to poor angles. Adam Jones needs to play...but so does Colson Coon. Also feel like we need to highlight Adam and Jared White in the receiving game more.

Kind of wild to think that the Big Sky preseason offensive player of the year might be the 3rd best RB on his own team when it comes to traditional running between the tackles RB play.wbtfg wrote: ↑Mon Oct 06, 2025 3:16 pmYES to all of this!!! He’s still dangerous and needs to be utilized, I 100% agree. He’s great with the ball in his hands in space. But he’s very clearly not the #1 option, and arguably not the #2 option for those traditional RB type plays.

Re: RTDB?
Even less far off when you remove the Oregon game. RB's would be 5.9 ypc. Including all runners MSU would lead the BSC with 230 per game, which is 27.8 more than the next best running team. MSU would be at 5.7 ypc, which is just. 0.1 behind ISU, which had a 27-281 game (10.4) average against Lincoln.VimSince03 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 06, 2025 1:32 pmRunning backs through 6 games (5.6 ypc in total):coloradocat wrote: ↑Mon Oct 06, 2025 11:21 amWe're halfway through the season (how did that happen?) and we still haven't had a 100 yard rusher yet or a 300 yard team total game.

When you consider strength of schedule, MSU is No. 1 in almost every major statistical category on offense and defense in the BSC. And several of them aren't even remotely close.

Chad absolutely crushed his hand that game as well. He didn't take his gloves off until after the game and they were frozen to him because of the blood. Said getting them off was more painful than anything he could remember. He was working for me at the time, so we let him take it a bit easy for a while after that.VimSince03 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 06, 2025 2:58 pm

Re: RTDB?
One of my favorite plays in MSU history was in the 2016 Cat-Griz game when Newell, Brekke and LaSane were all line up in the backfield and the ball went to LaSane, while Brekke and Newell threw great blocks to spring him, and then he ran over a DB and got the ball inside the five. I think Newell finished off the drive.ilovethecats wrote: ↑Tue Oct 07, 2025 11:41 amChad absolutely crushed his hand that game as well.
