Chip Kelly could have field day with Tommy.
I don't love the Raiders as a team but I love them as a good landing spot for Tommy to have a great chance to make the roster and be given a year or two to develop as a receiver. Excited to see how he does there, I'll never bet against him in anything he puts his mind to accomplishing.
Chip Kelly is the new Raider OC and he likes athletic, fast guys who are multi-faceted. As good a place as any and I imagine if Tommy shows promise as a slot receiver/gadget threat he’s a practice squad player at minimum.

From the Las Vegas Review Journal.

Tommy Mellott, QB/WR, Montana State

■ Pick: Sixth round (213th overall)

■ Hometown: Butte, Montana

■ Size: 5 feet, 11 inches, 200 pounds

■ Role: He was a quarterback in college, but tested off the charts athletically at his pro day and generated buzz as a conversion candidate to wide receiver and special teamer. He might take time to develop, but there are plenty of ways to use him.

■ Scouting report: “I want to be president of the fan club. He is going to be a process as someone to develop as a receiver, but you can’t test better. When he ran 4.39 and jumped 41 inches on his pro day … he’s super explosive as a runner. He’s elusive, he’s competitive, he’s tough. I think his immediate impact might just be as a returner as you’re trying to buy some time for him to develop as a receiver project. Everything I’ve got on the background stuff as a kid is off the charts. Like great kid. They love him there. They won a lot of football games.” — NFL draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah

Grade/analysis: A. This is the area of the draft to take these shots. He could be a home run or a strikeout, but the ceiling is there.

I saw a Colts logo the other day during the draft and thought in my head 'Baltimore Colts.' :?

I need to see the video of him getting the call from Pete Carroll! I still remember the video of Troy taking his call in his living room, such a great moment.

First and goal, clock winding down. That's Humphrey! It's TOUCHDOWN MONTANA STATE!

Did anyone have the Raiders as a landing spot for Tommy? It will be interesting to see how Pete Carroll develops him, and Cam. And then there's the Tom Brady factor, which I've read he intends to be an involved part owner, whatever that means. I've read several comments on Raider sites and many are similar to when Troy got drafted, negative Nancy's, but there's alot of excitement about both Tommy and Cam, maybe more for Tommy honestly. They have to actually make the team of course, but it will be interesting to see what happens.
Really, really happy for Tommy!

Only first round contracts are guaranteed with a 5th year option. Tommy does get that healthy signing bonus but will have to make the team to get game checks (which I fully expect him to). Most late round picks make around $1mill a year. Brock Purdy was making less than a Million per year before his big deal being a 7th round pick. Not all late picks make it though and very few see the end of the contract. Some teams move on and eat the signing bonus.

Here's an interview Tommy did with reporters from Las Vegas and the Raiders. A question from a familiar voice near the end.

I'm getting a kick out of these armchair quarterbacks evaluating the draft. Here is one from CBS Sports - in his review he questioned why "Running Quarterback Tommy Mallet from small school Montana" would be drafted in the 6th round:

"Las Vegas Raiders
Worst pick: Tommy Mellott, QB, Montana State, AND Cam Miller, QB, North Dakota State. Don't get the approach with back-to-back sixth-round picks on quarterbacks who likely won't do anything for the franchise. Why not just roll the dice with Sanders a round earlier?"

The 6th round and below is for that diamond-in-the-rough and teams really take chances. The Raiders are really high on Tommy. One interesting phenomenon....if they wanted solely a slot, the Raiders could have drafted Restrepo from Miami, who is the Canes all-time leader in receptions and yards, but ran a 4.85 at Pro Day. Interesting upside comparison.

I would not be disappointed to see more video features from Alex.

Tommy in the 6th would have made sense for all 32 teams.

Cam in the 6th (or 7th) is just a lottery ticket that you hope may one day turn into a serviceable QB2/scout team QB. No QB drafted on day 3 is expected to do anything more than that, you just kind of have to have 3 QBs on the roster.

I would talk to Alex a lot at spring and fall camp practices. She's a very nice and cool young lady. More beautiful on the the inside, than on the outside. And that's saying something. I love that she's in Vegas. A friendly face in the media crowd for Tommy. Every little thing helps.

I thought it was awesome, the big smile on his face when she started talking. You can tell he definitely feels more comfortable with her.
