Walk On Policy

Post by rollo_tumasi » Tue Apr 15, 2025 12:39 pm

Looking for some information about players walking onto the football team. Does MSU still have an open tryout & is it in the fall or the spring? My son is thinking about transferring back to MSU and would like to see if he could make the team for next year. Thanks for any info on this matter!!

I swear, it's like I'm playin' cards with my brother's kids or somethin'. You nerve-wrackin' sons-a-bitches.'

I could totally be wrong here, but I don't think the open tryout has been a consistent thing. I think they have it some years and not other years. Probably just depends on roster size. As for time frame, I think it has been after fall camp toward the end of august.

Obviously, I would imagine the first step would be for him to reach out to the football admin staff.

I believe by opting into the “House Settlement,” football rosters will be downsized and limited to 105 players. This I would think, would make it more difficult for those who are not a preferred walk-ons to land on a roster. In years past, some teams would have well over 105 players on their roster. As for open tryouts, I think that is only done when coaches see a need for it and not a regular occurrence. This is just my impression of the ever changing landscape of college football. I don’t want to dissuade anyone from pursuing their passion so I would contact the athletic department directly and not rely on information from anywhere else.

They historically always have a summer tryout, although starting July 1 they will need to be at 105 roster limit. My guess is there will still be an open tryout because you never know if the next Devin Slaughter is hanging around campus, but plan on it being even more competitive than in the past. Send an email to football@msubobcats.com and it should land with Chandler Arbizzani. He'll know what's up.

There is always more room for talent. There’s always openings. He needs to be persistent and contact the coaching. Staff jump through the academic hoops to make sure he is eligible and be willing to join the workout.
