Howe is the new dc........ownes goes the lbs...shep goes to safeties.... they are in the portal for a cb coach.... lots of turnover. Talent is there will the turnover hurt?????
I’m trying to think of a time since 2016 when an assistant coach leaving hurt MSU. Seems like it just keeps getting better.
2016: 4-7
2017: 5-6
2018: 8-5
2019: 11-4
2021: 12-3
2022: 12-2
2023: 8-4 (seems like/probably was an anomaly)
2024: 15-1

MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

2023 was the one season they actually DID retain both coordinators from the prior season. Coaches will come and go but ultimately it's the players who will determine how well your season turns out.

Also, not breaking any major news here but '23 was an absolutely brutal, brutal schedule. At the National Champions, at the runner up, at a quarterfinalist, home vs a semifinalist. You would be hard pressed to find a team that played 3 of the four semifinal teams in a given year(and nearly all 4), much less 3 of them away. NDSU this season and in '21 but they only had to play one of them on the road both of those years. They lost both.

I really think Owens is going to do a great job at LB coach. I thought he made a big difference last season with his approach to tackling and containing players when they got in space. MSU really cut down on gash plays (even though they gave up quite a few in the playoffs) in 2024.

Now would be the perfect time to announce the "game changing gift"! Maybe Daly didn't know about it? LOL!

This is the new norm, get used to it. Have a successful year and say goodbye to almost everyone. I sure am curious how NDSU kept so many players this year. Not a single one hit the portal?!? Their NIL can’t be that big!!? I think Daly will be a big loss and the season is going to reflect this loss along with so many others. People ask my MSU or UofM would want to jump to the FBS, this is the reason. An FBS MSU is more desirable than UTEP, in my opinion

Certainly possible. Don’t know anything about the U TEP roster. There are certainly guys on the MSU roster that would follow him given the opportunity.

This just shows how adept Vigen is at spotting talented young coaches. A great opportunity for Mesa.

Question of the day. Next portal period could be interesting.
Every portal period is going to be interesting from here on out! If Texan is right and Howe is the new DC I think the players will be very happy with that. He's extremely well liked from everything I've heard about him.
I don’t think Howe is the right guy for the job but I’ve been wrong before
Vigen will not promote anyone to a coordinator position he does not feel is “ready” as well as a good fit. If Howe is the guy, I trust Vigen.

Not knowing anything about him but what I see on the sidelines/tv/social media, he seems like a guy that wouldn't like being stuck up in the box. I'm sure he'll adjust but he's got great sideline energy.

I think Howe is perfect for the job because he has tons of experience (20+ years) and was the co-DC last year and did a very good job. He will slide into the job without a hiccup. I also think the players like him, which is huge. He also has a Montana connection having played and coached at Rocky. Reminds me of the NDSU head coach Polasek in terms of style and temperament.

Not all coordinators coach from the box, I think it's largely a matter of personal preference. In the Super Bowl, Vic Fangio for the Eagles was in the box but Steve Spagnuolo for the Chiefs was on the sideline.

Concerning the bolded part of your post, their NIL is big but it isn't THAT big. The thing is they have another fund at NDSU that's a fairly well kept secret called the GED fund. The letters stand for Gravy Every Day. Each player on the team gets a minimum of a quart of gravy every day with most players getting a gallon daily and some getting even more. Most players use it in various ways such as some on their morning cereal some on potatoes or rice or whatever meat they are having. some players drink it straight and gross as it may sound some freeze the gravy and eat it like ice cream. :yuck:
It may sound gross to you and me but it keeps those ND and MN boys home fat and sassy and dang near is more effective than money at keeping them home. Sure they could go to another school and get more money and make their own gravy but NDSU has a secret recipe that no one has been able to duplicate yet.

If you're looking for someone with a little authority, I'm your man. I have as little as anyone!

This isn't even the new norm, it's just the norm. Ash couldn't hang onto an OC because they kept moving up or taking HC jobs. The only reason Choate's DCs weren't the same story is Ash/Marshall let the talent level drop and Choate left real fast after he started winning. Ash, Choate, and Vigen have all dealt with a steady attrition of position coaches taking P5, G5, or even NFL jobs.

The only "solution" is to start losing a lot, and that would defeat the purpose of keeping coaches
