And we wouldn't put out a similar tweet if Scottre was convinced to stay with $$$? A top FBS target stays with homegrown NIL money...seems like a win for the program and a win for the NIL.CalgaryCat wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 12:23 pmIt’s a bit sad that a program has to celebrate a player just staying on the team.

Eh, I really don’t like the whole feel of it. Celebrating that your school scraped enough money up to keep the wolves away every season is going to be so tiresome. At least in the NFL your best players aren’t free agents every year.WetBreeches wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 12:50 pmAnd we wouldn't put out a similar tweet if Scottre was convinced to stay with $$$? Can't say I appreciate the whole feel of it either...but at the same time, retaining your top talent is better than losing them.

That tweet wasn't put out by UM, but by their NIL Collective group. Who absolutely SHOULD be promoting and celebrating their successes at retaining players as this will encourage others to donate to the cause.CalgaryCat wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 12:23 pmIt’s a bit sad that a program has to celebrate a player just staying on the team.

I did see that GOG was the group that posted it, and I understand this is the new normal in college football, especially at our levelMSU01 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 1:25 pmThat tweet wasn't put out by UM, but by their NIL Collective group. Gotcha, I think I misunderstood somewhat the point you were trying to make. It is indeed unfortunate that top FCS players transferring out has become such a common thing now that actually retaining one guy is cause for celebration.CalgaryCat wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 1:29 pmI did see that GOG was the group that posted it, and I understand this is the new normal in college football, especially at our levelMSU01 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 1:25 pmThat tweet wasn't put out by UM, but by their NIL Collective group. Re: Any Portal News Yet
It will be interesting if this can continue multiple years. NDSU did big push last year to keep top guys. One to D player got paid, got hurt in pre season, didn't play, then declared to portal before playoffs. Very many lost investments like this and could be hard to raise funds.CalgaryCat wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 1:29 pmI did see that GOG was the group that posted it, and I understand this is the new normal in college football, especially at our levelMSU01 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 1:25 pmThat tweet wasn't put out by UM, but by their NIL Collective group. Well at least one thing went right for the Griz at the end of the year. But yes, I'm afraid this is the new normal.MSU01 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 2:01 pmGotcha, I think I misunderstood somewhat the point you were trying to make. Yeah, it seems like there are a lot of stories of both boosters getting burned and players getting taken advantage of. The NIL landscape is pretty chaotic right now.tetoncat wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 2:05 pmIt will be interesting if this can continue multiple years. NDSU did big push last year to keep top guys. It’s good for the conference and rivalry if some of the good players stick around. I’m guessing the fact that Gilman’s younger brother is on the Griz weighed heavily.

I think it was more of the NIL was able to get a number high enough to make him want to stay and not take his brother with him. It’s the new world, if your good you will get money to play in college

With 8 home games and a pretty cake schedule, Gilman should be able to get 1,800-2,000 yards if Hauck actually uses him like he should.

Re: Any Portal News Yet
Looks like the Griz have been offering a LOT of players. I get it, I think that is their only option to try to get back to being relevant in 2025. Tough route to go though. No doubt they'll be able to sign some talent, but what will you end up with in terms of an overall team that meshes well, has the right attitude with no selfish players, sticks together and all play complimentary football with all three phases, etc.? It's a tall order to go super heavy on the transfers and put together a championship caliber team.

With limited NIL money at this level, why spend on someone who can’t throw the ball or play in the trenches?

Re: Any Portal News Yet
Is the next step in NIL to have multi year contracts where if you leave after a year the new school has to pay back the initial school? Don’t understand why contracts can’t be written that way, unless the athletes just have all the strength at the negotiating table (more power to them if they do).
Any insight?

That is absolutely going to be the next step once schools are able to directly pay the players instead of it having to go through NIL deals. But it will greatly favor the big schools who have the money to do that.KageRage wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 9:44 pmIs the next step in NIL to have multi year contracts where if you leave after a year the new school has to pay back the initial school? Anyone hear how much he actually received? I have a hard time believing it was in excess of $10,000 to $15,000 at the FCS level. I am guessing it was complimentary vehicle usage with free lodging and maybe some cash. If it was significant money, how do other players react on the team? There is limited money so whatever one guy is allocated affects all the others.coochorama42 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 9:43 pmWith limited NIL money at this level, why spend on someone who can’t throw the ball or play in the trenches?

Re: Any Portal News Yet
What a crazy short term approach. Quick fix at the cost of developing long term players. And it further alienates the current players from the coaching staff. If they bring in a QB, I can’t imagine Huot staying. And how does a new RB in the room affect the usage of Gilman and the attitudes of backup RB’s that just saw Gilman get paid?catatac wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 8:35 pmLooks like the Griz have been offering a LOT of players.
