Playoff Game Times

Post by cat-o-nine » Tue Nov 26, 2024 8:18 am

I'm curious about the scheduling of the playoff games after the second round. As the #1 seed, does MSU get to have any input on what time of day they play? We seemed to have had several night playoff games over the years that were dictated by the TV broadcast schedules. Personally, I would prefer daytime games with the 1pm start as opposed to anything after dark, mostly because of fan travel and road/weather concerns. Does anybody know how these games are scheduled?

I'm sure MSU can provide input if they want, but ultimately I'm assuming that ESPN gets the final say as to which games they put on TV. There is a Friday night quarterfinal game this year but unlike previous years the two semifinals will be played as a Saturday doubleheader. The start times for those are 10 AM and 1:30 PM Mountain Time, so it seems safe to say that the early game would go to NDSU if they host and then MSU would get the 1:30 start.

It looks like the second round is all on ESPN+, so the game times are set.
the Quarter finals will likely have at least 1 ESPN2 or ESPNU game. those times are not set yet
Looks like the Semifinals are on ABC and will be at noon or 3:30 PM eastern (I doubt that will change much since it is on ABC)
Championship is at 7:30 PM eastern on ESPN

Last year there was one quarter-final game on Friday night (Furman @ gris) and the other three were on Saturday. Last year there was one semi-final game on Friday night and one on Saturday.

This year I think there will be one quarter-final game on Friday, but both semi-final games are shown to be on Saturday at 10:00 & 1:30. I think our chances of being the Friday night quarter-final game is good (because of our fan base). I say good because it gives our opponent one less day to prepare and I like night games.

This year the quarter-final games will be F Dec 13 & SA Dec 14. Semi-final games will be SA Dec 21st. Here's to a Merry ChristmasπŸŽ…!

Our game next SA Dec 7 is at 1:00.

I'm probably in the minority, but due to other obligations, I'd do anything for us to get the Friday night game on the 13th. [-o<

Thanks, guys. Yes, I was referring to the games after our second-round game which has already been scheduled for a 1PM start. The start times for the quarterfinals and semi-finals times were what I was inquiring about.

Me as well. It happened with W&M two years ago. Need a repeat.

that friday night game is a definite advantage for the home team. gives the opposition 1 to 2 days (depending on travel) less time to prepare and heal.

I was thinking of that one as well!

I happen to like night games anyway. But I have an event Saturday afternoon I don't want to miss. If we play Friday night I'm in the clear. If we play Saturday afternoon I'll have tough decisions to make.

Just an FYI MSU graduation is Ftiday, December 13.

I would bet that we take a Sat game that week

I don't know if I'm misremembering, but when we played that Friday night against W&M wasn't that graduation as well? I remember having to drive up earlier that day to set stuff up and it was packed up there and then I remembered it was graduation.

I believe you're correct. The graduation ceremony is at 10:00 AM on Friday so while it might not be ideal, I don't really see why MSU couldn't also host a football game at 7:00 PM the same day.

Possible QF matchups:

MSU vs Idaho or Richmond
USD/Davis
SDSU vs UIW or Nova
NDSU/Mercer

Id think the Friday night game would be between MSU or USD. If Its MSU/Richmond its probably less likely. But who knows. A packed stadium with a great atmosphere might drive which game ESPN broadcasts and if thats true, then its certainly going to be MSU. None of the other three games will sell out.

Hating the griz since 02.
