Odds of ever going 11-0 Again

Post by aucat » Wed Nov 20, 2024 11:51 am

Next year we open at Oregon. I don't think we will go 11-0 next year. I know making a schedule is not easy but I wish that MSU
could try to schedule FBS teams that we have a chance of beating, like New Mexico this year.

I'm assuming that we schedule teams like Oregon for only one reason, a big payoff. But there are LOTS of FBS teams that I think
a strong FCS team can compete with. Oregon is probably not one of them

Considering this is the first time in the program’s history we have accomplished an 11-0 season, I would say the odds are stacked against us.

It’s not just the money, but the local exposure too. Kids want to play in the big stadiums and one way to do that is to schedule teams like Oregon and tell kids that they can have their cake and eat it too (at least to a small extent).

Per ESPN on Nov 20, 2019 — The Big Sky program (Montana State) will be paid a $680,000 guarantee for the game, the report added. Oregon won 27-14 in the only previous meeting in 1947.

I think the odds of future results are not reflected with past results. Granted it is the first time, but with the program being at the elite level of FCS now, it will happen again. Likely not next year with Oregon on the schedule but I would put money on an undefeated season within the next 5 years.

I'm thinking luck of the draw on those big games. They get scheduled several years in advance and you just never know how good they're going to be. Granted, I think with OR you can pretty much bet they'll be damn good, just maybe not #1 FBS team in the country good, lol. Few years ago when the Griz went into Husky stadium and took them down, they got lucky because Huskies ended up in a down year with a bunch of turmoil, turnover.

It's likely that both Oregon and Montana State meet as national champions of their respective subdivision. Imagine that...

There is a bit of a financial reason the Cats and the gris don't play lower tier FBS team very often. When you think about 20,000 paying at least $40 to go to the game thats $800K. Thats not even taking into consideration corporate $$ as well. So going to UNM and getting paid $360K is probably a net loss in the hundreds of thousands for the athletic dept. over paying a Maine or Stetson $200K to come play here for a near guaranteed win. A Power team though paying $680K is enough to off set it.

It's why teams like PSU and Sac St play multiple FBS teams every year. $360K is way more than they make for a home game.

With the transfer QB that is coming in after this season…We will beat Oregon. This kid is legit.

It's hard for FCS team to go undefeated; they usually play an FBS team every year. Cats and Griz have an advantage with bigger stadiums so we could in theory play all FCS opponents. Im sure that FBS payday is hard to pass up.

What really amazes me is the grizzlies have 8 home games and 4 games on the road next year. One of their home games is against a division II team. How are they able to come up with 8 home games, that seems like a tremendous advantage to pad you're win loss record.

Someone can correct me, but I think Leon said once that during 12 game seasons, Cats play up. In 11 game seasons I works to make it all FCS.

Going 11-0 is pretty damn impressive, but won't be done again at least for awhile.

I'd be happy with going undefeated in BSC play as as substitute instead.

I’m not sure how many BSC teams have done it. I believe UM was 11-0 in 2007 and 1996. Anyone recall others?

MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Sac State in 2022 was 11-0, the year that they and MSU ended up as undefeated co-champions because they didn't play each other.

I think that the odds actually might be pretty good. As the FCS continues to decline around the country, it is harder to keep up, and schools will continue to struggle to compete. If you think about the current 4 year run, you can count the regular season FCS losses on one hand, how many times have we been able to say that in Bobcat history? Not saying it will happen every year, but I don't think it's that far off to think it could happen 2-3 more times over the next 10 years assuming the cats stay in the FCS/Big Sky.
