Sit Tommy against mercyhurst…?

Post by mslacatfan » Sun Sep 15, 2024 9:43 am

Would it make sense to just not play Tommy at all this coming weekend? They might as well be playing Hellgate, the cats will crush these guys….

-the #1 goal this year is to keep Tommy healthy. Why even risk playing him in a game we will easily win by 40 or so…

-the #1 question mark on this team is the backup quarterback…. Who would it be? Are they any good?.. The more reps the better for these guys.

Why not just let Chance and/or Reed play the entire game with all the starters (until it’s a blowout anyway), give them some real/meaningful game action where you are actually running the offense and not just handing it off to run out the clock at the end of the game…

Just a thought.

Work on his passing, timing, etc., and not sitting him for three weeks between games when conference play is coming up would be a couple of reasons. Doesn’t mean they have to run him much though or put him in risky positions.

I’m sure those other QBs will be in the game by the second quarter.

Play him just like we did against Maine. There's a good chance the #1 offense scores 40+ in the first 20-25 minutes of the game. Reed gets to run the offense for 15-20 minutes of game time, then Wilson gets the rest.

He needs a drive or 2 at least

After a week off and Tommy seeming to take a few games to get in rhythm with passing, you absolutely play him for a bit. Then whenever they pull him they will rotate our subs at QB until it clicks with one.

Let him have a few drives where we work on our downfield passing game. We know he can hit those 10 yard back-shoulder throws to sidelines. Let's see some crossing routes 20 yards downfield or some fly patterns. Time to work on stretching the field...

If he doesn't play he'll have 20 days off in a row. That's not ideal IMO. Play him 4-5 offensive drives with the explicit directions to give 100% on zone read and just treat those as mental reps. Or don't call those at all.

Whatever decision is made with Tommy's snap count, I think it's important to get Reed and Wilson some time operating with the ones.

Just don't allow him to cross the line of scrimmage. He won't need to in this one.

MSU will respect all their opponents. Mercyhurst is bad but they are still Div 1. I echo what everyone else is saying.

Yup, even if the Cats score, Tommy should just run right to the bench and celebrate with his teammates after they come back there. And none of that jumping up to chest bump with a TD scorer. Troy Andersen even got injured doing that.

Well said! I absolutely love the idea of working on passing/timing and not running Tommy…But I guarantee we don’t do it…We’ll run for 300+ yards and throw for 120 and the old school mentality fan base will be thrilled.

They are D1 in designation only. They were a really bad D2 team last year (2-9) and haven't done much to improve yet.

If we are running those in practice and can complete, why show it on game film till needed.

Are you comparing practice reps to real game scenarios?

Because running it in practice is not the same as running it in real game time with real defensive pressure.

I think the backups really need to get some reps in game situations.

Practice reps against our 1s early in camp is better than showing it against Mercyhurst

Tommy single biggest weakness is that he WANTS to run the ball & he seeks out contact. I think you tell him hes going in for the 1st half assuming he follows the basics.

If he crosses the LOS for any reason, pull him & make him sit for a drive.
