Cats vs. Mercyhurst predictions

Post by BleedingBLue » Sun Sep 15, 2024 9:04 am

We've talked about realignment and who knows what else for a week. Sure it's only Sunday morning, but it's game week and time to talk about the next opponent.

The Mercyhurst Lakers come to town on Saturday and even they know this is going to be a beat down. How much of a beat down? That remains to be seen, but it'll depend on how good our 3s and 4s are against their 1s. My guess is they are still a touchdown or two better, resulting in a massacre.

Cats score 10 TDs and have 5 guys with 100+ yards on the ground and 2 QBs with 100+ through the air. 750 yards of offense. The RB quartet of Humphrey, Jones, White, and Coon combine for 8 total TDs, with 5 coming from the two main backs. Tommy runs for 1 and passes for 1.

Cats - 70
Actual Lakers on a Lake - 3

I think the Cats will rest key players very early on and try to take their foot off the gas, but even the backups should be able to put up points against Mercyhurst and stop them most of the time on defense.

MSU 57
Mercyhurst 6

52-10

By Massey rankings this week this is the worst team in FCS. Bummer that SFA backed out because this game isn’t any fun.

Starters might play two full quarters. Just hope to get out of the game healthy and get 2’s, 3’s, and 4’s plenty of action. Score won’t be nearly as bad as it could be for this reason.

Chase Wilson plays a good amount of the 4th quarter

Will Jordan Reed be allowed to run the same scripted plays as Tommy Mellot? Put him in real learning situations. He needs to learn from what he sees. Unless of course we plan on running the ball 98% of the time when there’s an emergency.

This game will be painful to watch but I hope to see the Cats work on passing a bit more, even though I’m a RTDB guy. The Cats could shut these guys out if they wanted to play ones or twos the whole game. I only see maybe one decent offensive player on the Mercyhurst side and that’s their tall receiver. I like that guy. The Mercyhurst QB can sling it a bit, just look at his JC numbers, but this isn’t JC and he is a bit on the too short side and doesn’t have the oline protection to do much damage. I know the Cats don’t want to run up the score on Mercyhurst, but if Mercyhurst can’t stop the run at all, it will happen anyway. I remember back in the 80s when the Cats scored 86 points in a game against Eastern Oregon. In the second half, the Cats just ran the same play over and over and Eastern Oregon still couldn’t stop them from scoring. Heck, at Cal Poly a couple of years ago, the Cats just ran the ball and decimated Poly’s defense.

If the starters play more than a quarter, maybe even 1/2 of the 1st quarter, I’ll be disappointed by the coaching staff. It’s a foregone conclusion this game will be a blowout, and we appreciate Mercyhearst being willing to take it on the chin, but in my opinion we don’t need to go full Bobby Hauck on them and and try to embarrass them. Let’s get the backup QB’s lots of playing time to learn and evaluate and keep starters off the field as much as possible to keep players fresh and un-injured. The Cats should be very well rested going into the mid-season schedule.

I think we'll have at least 2 defensive scores and a punt return touchdown. This one could be ugly though Vigen usually does a pretty good job of holding back the hounds. The Mercyhurst kids need to applauded and thanked for coming here.

I’d like to see some of our freshman like Unterrio and Luvens get some reps.

I hope Reed and Wilson / Duchien get reps with at least some of our ones on the line. Reed is not the quickest, however, I’d like to see what he can do with some protection, dude just gets swarmed when he is in.

I was looking at that too. The Mercyhurst kick offs aren't deep enough to take the Grand Marqui out of the game, so expect him to get at least one return. Taco will get multiple decent chances at a punt return TD as well.

Reed's first possession in the second half of the Maine game was with the starting o-line. He just got strip sacked because of a missed protection by the tight end, I believe. I think we will see Reed with the starting o-line at the start or mid-way through the second quarter and maybe part of the 3rd, but that will depend on the score.

Good to know. I just can be reactionary with my assessments and I really want to see Reed play in a more natural game setting. What he seems to need is confidence and control. Physically, he has the tools!

He needs reps when we are still “in the game”. Too many players probably took the foot off the gas thinking it was easy and forgot to play at their level and not the level of the opposing team

I am hoping each of the quarterbacks get some reps with the number ones as well and gets to actually run the offense. Particularly interested in seeing Duchien as well as Wilson again.
