If the offense wants the passing game to work, ditch the 5 yard outs that are operating in the same space as our run game, and commit to passing deep to take advantage of our running game. That deep pass to Garrigan didn’t connect, but it helped push the secondary back a little. That threat NEEDS to be there.

Nuun tablets. I hunted with Jeff Fischer once and he turned me onto that stuff. He said the Titans bought those things by the pallet load. They are truly unbelievable at eliminating cramps.

If you want to listen to a fantastic play by play guy, listen to or watch Keaton Gillogly on the radio broadcast. I think Keaton is better than Creighton.MSU01 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 31, 2024 11:19 pmThere's a zero percent chance that announcer spent one minute looking at the MSU roster before kickoff. Re: The Official-unofficial MSU Bobcats vs Utah Tech gameday thread.
Some observations from last night:
- Taki Uluilakepa played the entire game at free safety so that leads me to believe Blake Stillwell was benched as he was dressed on the sidelines the whole game. Utah Tech only threw deep a few times but over all Taki didn't make any glaring mistakes.
- Cole Sain had a tough night in pass pro as #91 gave him fits several times. Overall though the o-line was incredibly dominant in the first half.
- Jaden Perkins played the entire second half at LG which means Burke Mastel is indeed injured. Jaden has a lot of similarities to Justus but isn't as quick so when he gets beat its glaring. If Johnson trusts him to be the next guy up then I guess that's how we roll until JT, Burke, or Conner get back healthy. As for Moore, was icing his neck/shoulder (not directly on his shoulder) so maybe it was just a pulled muscle? If it was a collarbone he would've been in a sling.
- The pure drop back pass game frustrates me as I think we are so much more dangerous with getting Tommy moving left to right off play action. However, I thought Walker settled in during the 3rd quarter and called a great 2nd half. A few more wrinkles getting added every week. Adam Jones taking direct snaps and building plays off that is fantastic.
- Certainly wasn't a lack of pressure last night. If Utah Tech QBs had to move off of first read they had to get rid of the ball which led to a pile of incompletions and those incompletions were just throwaways. Several plays I saw UT bring in extra help and Brody got triple and double teamed often. If you only follow stats, it looks like we didn't do anything in the pass rush department but the reality was UT QBs felt it from the first drive and threw the ball away whenever they could. I was almost positive we were going to get a pick six last night and it was close a few times. The sacks will start to come once we face a team that wants to throw the ball at will.
- Bryce Grebe played the most snaps of his young career and got in with the starters during the first half. On that possession, he went pass breakup, tackle, and pass breakup leading to a 3 and out. He is 100% our 3rd LB.
- Our corners tackled well and I've been very impressed with Andrew Powdrell in run support these first two games. If we can get him to set the edge like that against better competition, our defense is going to be tough.
- Our place kicking game is about as rock bottom as it gets but Myles is our #2 kicker after all. I'll wait to pass judgement until I see him kick this year. Vigen definitely tried to get a competitive kicker on the roster since last fall but nothing came to fruition in the transfer department. I'm just happy they aren't trying to force Hall back into the role because he is a highlight reel on kickoffs and punts right now.
Overall, got out of there with a win and we are finally back home for a bit. Mission accomplished going 2-0 on the road to start the season.

We saw a little more quick pass game with taco, which I liked.
I’d like to see us be more successful in the downfield pass game, and I think there are some opportunities to open up some screen game as well.
The passing concepts, so far, seem to be pretty vanilla. Not sure if that’s because we’re holding that back or if that’s just who we are.

You’re not going to get a lot of sacks or turnovers when you’re on the field so little.
Never mind, I found it.

Not that this wasn't already official but Dan Davies confirmed on the post-game radio after Brent's interview that it was a double calf cramp for Tommy. Incredibly painful but incredibly short-term. He wasn't sure on Conner Moore but then also alluded that some OL were close to returning meaning either Burke Mastel or JT Reed (or even Justus Perkins) are progressing.

Excellent write up, and honest on both strengths and weaknesses. Curious about trying to force Tommy into the square peg of being a drop back passer. Clearly he likes creating lanes rather than waiting in the pocket. Is it stubbornness from the Coaching or is Tommy just vapor locked at the beginning of the games until we adjust and “clean up” the Defensive scheme looks given?VimSince03 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 01, 2024 1:17 pmSome observations from last night:

A lot of times first 10 plays are scripted. It also seems like they got different players involved in passing each game. Maybe that is by design rather that what defenseive play dictates.catsrback76 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 01, 2024 11:25 pmExcellent write up, and honest on both strengths and weaknesses.

Didn’t watch as closely as I would’ve liked and will have to review the game some time this week.VimSince03 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 01, 2024 1:17 pmSome observations from last night:

Bryce impressed me against NM and glad to see him still playing well. Should be some opportunities for him to get more snaps against Maine and Mercyhurst. He looks very promising.
Seeing Tommy roll out was something I wanted to see more of against NM, it plays to his strengths and gives him the opportunity to do what he does best. It was a frustration I had last season as well.
Rolling out also plays to the O-Line’s strengths as pass pro isn’t their bread and butter. Roll outs give them more chance to drive block IMO or a combination of pass pro and drive blocking.
Holding Utah Tech to no first downs in the first three quarters is a huge positive. Not the most high powered offense on the schedule by any means but encouraging nonetheless.
And everyone saying all I do is complain. There was a largely positive post so

Only thing better than watching the gris lose is when the Cats win

Has anyone found a good replay of the game online? My go to guy, Wally the Bronco, doesn't seem to be posting games anymore.

I'm talking about online, so I can make a copy of the game for my files. For years now, I've been copying all the posted game high lites and full games that I can find online, just so I can go back and watch later.
