Why do we continue to give Montana kids the "Shaft?&qu

Post by Griz N Diggers » Thu Aug 03, 2006 1:07 am

If You look at the group of WALK-ONS for the 2006 Recruiting class, they are all very solid players, and you would think that being a MONTANA PROGRAM, at least some of these kids would get some kind of scholarship money, not to mention those who turned down walk-ons for NAIA Scholarships. The state of Montana has great football, and the VERY BEST PROGRAMS IN MONTANA ARE BUILT AROUND MONTANA PLAYERS!!!i.e.-Carroll College(4X National Champions), U of M(8 STRAIT bIG sKY titles!!!) I Hope those coaches don't turn Bozeman into BOZ- ANGELES even further. YOUR THOUGHTS!

I think you need to take it to the smack board. And you forgot our BSC titles somewhere in the griz's '8 straight' claim.

He was just making a claim that the "other" MT schools are doing great with MT players.

But this is a tired and redundant topic.

I have no doubt that they are very solid players. I look forward to seeing them in a Bobcat uniform. I am also convinced that many of them will be awarded scholarships either this year, or before next fall.

But if GrizNDigger is so convinced that they are very solid players, why didn't the Griz offer them a scholarship?

:-k

Part of the recruiting philosophy is to not be Costco and offer discounted(partial) scholarships to Montana kids. They identify the best prospects that fit need areas and offer full rides. That may work out to between 4 and 10 kids. Some will come, some won't. Another group of kids are asked to walk-on and "earn" a scholarship. That has been very effective. Brant Birkland, Bobby Daly and Aaron Papich to name few. In any given year there are approximately 10-12 kids in the state who have Big Sky ability. A couple of those may go to a higher level. The bottom line for any program is to increase the level of success. Montana has a finite number of kids with the ability to play at a 1-AA level. The question is: Would you rather have all Montana kids and get spanked, or take select kids and win? We would all like to see an all Montana team, it just isn't realistic! Carroll is a good NAIA program, but nowhere near 1-AA.

Our strategy isn't any different than the Griz. Most of both teams' Montana kids are given partials or "preferred walk ons" with the chance to earn their full ride

Moving to smack board ... and judging by the poor writing and spelling skills ... it probably is bb. This username will likely be banned soon unless they can prove otherwise.

I would be willing to bet that over half of the in-state players that UM has started as walk-ons or non-scholarship players. Like it or not, we don't have as high of a level of competition in our high schools as the metropolitan areas and most of our kids have to prove to the coaches that they can play against that level of competition before the coaches will give them a scholarship---that is just the way it works, even at UM.

I don't remember the screen name, but I vaguely recall that the poster formerly known as Wolfman/AZ/all his other names once had a screen name on egriz that was discovered before he made any posts.

(The name was listed at the bottom of the main screen, where it shows the name of the "newest user." A poster noticed it and pointed it out in a thread before the guy even made his first post, and mentioned that it sounded like a name AZ would use. After a few posts, it was obvious that it was AZ, and the account got deleted.)
