I cannot believe that some of you are giving this coach a pass on this interview. This isn’t just a person that is “a bad interview”. This is a weasel that lacks accountability and will find anyway to point the finger in another direction. Which is bad for any teammate/coach, but for a coordinator, it is especially going to limit his ability to improve. So, for all the knuckleheads that can’t see this here is your interpretation.

406: Is there anything specifically you’re trying to focus on or anything you wanted to clean up from the last game?
TH: Well, everything comes down to blocking and catching and tackling, and we didn't do those things very well, for whatever reason. So we've worked on the blocking, we've worked on the catching and trying to get athletes in space and see what they can do, and just continue to do what we do. That's worked before. And trying to be more consistent, that's what we need. Leadership and consistency is probably the biggest thing that we lack at times.

Interpretation:
The players didn’t do very well in doing the things the players are supposed to do. We need the players to be leaders and start holding themselves accountable.
Added Note: Interesting comment on leadership coming from this dude.

406: Anything that you saw specifically? I know there was a false start in there, a couple runs that got kind of blown up. Is that just as simple as executing?
TH: Simple as that. Ten guys doing their job and one guy not doing his job. Obviously as a coach, you want to look at the play calls and all that and take the blame for our players because they played their butts off. But it was just out of sync, out of whack. It was interesting.

Interpretation: Well, I know the play calls were right, we just kept having players mess them up. I really WANT to take blame, but you know, I just can’t. I don’t know, it was interesting, they just kept messing up.
Added Note: It’s really telling that he says he wants to. And it matters that he said “want”. He doesn’t take any responsibility. He just says he wants to.

406: Any comment on why Sean didn't play very much in that game or the Idaho game?
TH: No comment. Yeah, I can’t. That’s… yeah, no. Sorry.

Interpretation: I really want to tell you some things I’ve been holding back but I can’t. I really shouldn’t. And I probably shouldn’t because I’ll essentially be throwing another player under the bus to protect myself.

406: Both (Idaho and UM) games, he came in and there was some procedural stuff or maybe misread too. Again, you don't have to comment, but I'm just curious if you can on if that was part of (his limited playing time), him making mistakes.
TH: It’s a lot of stuff. He's a young kid, and everybody makes mistakes at quarterback. That's not just it. It's probably the rhythm of the game, it's practicing during the week, it's executing during the week and on game day. You look at Senior Night (against Eastern Washington), that was a little bit different with them because we were up so much and there just happened to be plays. It was Senior Night, trying to get him involved on some things that were wide open.

Interpretation: Ok, you pressed me enough now I’ll kind of say what I wanted to say before. Everybody is on my case because Sean scores so many TDs every time he is in there and I didn’t play him at Idaho or Montana. But people need to get off my case here. You need to realize that I only played him so much against Eastern because it was Senior night, and we were up by so much. And he did so well because the plays I called had things so wide open that anybody could have done what he did. I most definitely know what I’m doing in close games and I did not forget about one of my best players.
Added Note: He clearly hears what people are complaining about but can’t admit his mistake. In order to protect himself and his decisions, he diminishes Sean’s accomplishments. Not cool.

I want to be clear, I don’t care for him as a play caller but my problems with this interview has nothing to do with what he said or didn’t say in terms of X/O’s. It has everything to do with how he uses players to protect himself. The players are the program. They own the program. They are the most valuable asset to the program. If I was the head coach, to protect my program, this toolbag would be done. Remember this isn’t the first time he has done something like this.
Great post. My thoughts exactly. He cannot deal with accountability, it shows on the field, in interviews and with his personal life. It’s everyone’s fault but his and no matter how subtle, he throws them under the bus. Hell, the dude obviously looks up to Ryan Leaf, that alone speaks volumes. I’ll take a shot at him, plain and simple Housewright is not a person any parent should want their child to be around or look up to. He has had moments to have his redemption, however, instead he tucks his tail and blames someone else.

I posted this on the Valcin commits thread after reading the article about him on 406 Sports. He credited the coaching staff with a big reason why he wanted to come to MSU, Housewright specifically, among a few others. Maybe, just maybe, the players like him more than the fans do. Perhaps his public persona, like when giving interviews, doesn't reflect who he really is. Valcin commented about the family feeling, the love among the team. That should say something to all of BN that maybe there is something special going on that we're not all privy to. Just a thought.

OK, for everyone that things Housewright needs to go? Can you name a OC in the big sky that you would rather have? I can't think of anybody.
How about Justin Udy? He was going to be our OC after Miller left and before Vigen was hired.

Great post! I’ll take it from someone who has actually talked to Housewright face to face before some overzealous anonymous poster on a message board. Thanks for sharing.

The Justin Udy that got an Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty at the end of the SDSU game? That doesn't sound like high character leadership to me.

To be clear. I hated posting my take, I didn't really want to post it, and definitely didn't enjoy posting it. I'd rather post about X/O's and not about what appears to be a character issue. But after reading people making excuses for this interview for the past couple days, I felt like I had to post something because I do care about the program, which is the players.

Point is, there wasn't a whole lot of zeal behind the post. Quite the opposite.

How do you know it was him? I've never heard officially which coach that penalty was called on.
Also, I don't agree that getting 1 penalty disqualifies you from being a high character person.

The best coaches never get fired up enough to get a penalty. But also, they can’t just be quiet on the field. They gotta have that fire to get the players goin! Need to show intensity! But also, ya know, quiet enough the officials never notice them.

Just listened to the Ridin with Rider with Mike Rider and Colter. They actually were surprised Vigen allowed that interview to happen, and weren't surprised at how little was said.
Your analysis isn't necessarily wrong, obviously it's speculation and reading between the lines, but some of your thoughts were valid. At the same time, none of us really know what the relationships are between the coaches and players. That being said, as I posted above, one recruit who had multiple big time offers, and is a big time recruit, chose MSU because of the coaches, Housewright specifically. So that has to reflect something. Honestly, I'm not super impressed with him either. But I don't play for him, interact with him, or know him personally. Those who do are much better judges of who he really is, and Valcin is coming here to play for him. Worth considering.

Exactly. Everything Housewright does is wrong but if anyone else on the team does anything that he'd be criticized for it's being "fired up". My post was very tongue in cheek.

What am I missing? I've been busy this fall and haven't hung on every play or watched any game replays. An unsportsmanlike means he can't run an offense? I'm being sincere, I have no idea why having Udy as an OC is a bad thing.

Mostly a joke. Some of the Housewright haters make it seem like our coaches all have to be boy scouts. An unsportsmanlike penalty at the end of a game (which I believe wasn't Udy's first) doesn't seem like the kind of positive leadership these people claim to want.

An unsportsmanlike penalty ...
From the same refs EVERYONE here states must be legally blind? The same refs who see what they want and don't see the multitude of real penalties?

Has anyone actually seen the infraction that was supposedly "unsportsmanlike"?

At the same time, didn’t a former player call Housewright a clown on Twitter or something like that? I think it was Jacque Allen.

Point is, there wasn't a whole lot of zeal behind the post. Quite the opposite.
At the same time, didn’t a former player call Housewright a clown on Twitter or something like that? I think it was Jacque Allen.
He was derogatory but that isn’t the actual quote. Also, Jahque never played for Vigen or Housewright.

OK, for everyone that things Housewright needs to go? Can you name a OC in the big sky that you would rather have? I can't think of anybody.
How about Justin Udy? He was going to be our OC after Miller left and before Vigen was hired.
The Justin Udy that got an Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty at the end of the SDSU game? That doesn't sound like high character leadership to me.
The best coaches never get fired up enough to get a penalty. But also, they can’t just be quiet on the field. They gotta have that fire to get the players goin! Need to show intensity! But also, ya know, quiet enough the officials never notice them.
Okay, let's take the penalty out of it. Let's look at him being the current Passing Game Coordinator and we apparently have one pass play - the fade we all love so much.
