Griz finally have complete game
The Griz played well for almost all of the game, winning 34-7. Their most complete game, by far. The D dominated from start to finish, but did give up an opening drive of 55 yards (for SS’s only score). SS was held to 115 yards in the first half, and 153 in 2d half, for 268. SS was 15-39 passing. Their 2 QB's didn’t seem very accurate on long balls, but then they was getting pressure much of the time. Only sacked once, though. The Griz D has developed pretty good depth as the season has gone on. Some of the younger players with mainly special teams and clean up time last season, have now played enough to be good players. My impression is that the Griz are fairly healthy. McDowell should stop trying to leap on tacklers at the end of plays.
The Griz had 547 yards of TO. That’s probably the biggest TO of season, but I didn’t look. 305 yards of rushing for 6.1 average. McDowell was 12-22, with a pick. It was an odd and errant throw on 3d down in the redone. I’m curious as to what went wrong on it. That was his first pick of the year. McDowell also had a 97 yard double pump TD later in the game, to seal the win. That’s the longest play from scrimmage in Griz history. The Big Sky record is 99 yards. UM had 5 long drives of 75, 77, 99 and 62.
Gilman had 117 yards, for 7.1 average. McDowell had 83 yards. Ostmo had 68, averaging 6.2.
The Griz o-line played well. Opened holes and protected. Gave up 2 sacks. 1st team all conference guard Maginnes didn’t play. Heard he’s having some family issues, and also had an injury early in the season.
Hill led the Griz with 9 tackles. He is having a terrific season.
36 - 24 TOP to Griz. 6 of 14 3d down conversions for Griz. 4-16 for SS. 7 penalties for UM; 5 for SS. SS kicker missed 2 makable FG’s (one was 23). Griz kicker missed an extra point. There was a good wind on the field. Mostly across the field. The Box Score say it was 15 mph from the NE, which is the Hellgate Canyon wind. My guess is that the CA boys didn’t love the cooler damp weather and wind. SS averaged 3.9 per play; UM 7.6.
Two SS players were ejected. 1 for targeting. 1 for taking off his helmet and throwing it to the ground, with 2 seconds left in the first half. A UM lineman was ejected for an unsportsmanlike penalty where he fell or jumped on the SS player he had panicked. I don’t understand the rules on o-linemen landing on defenders that they pancaked. I don’t know why that’s a penalty.
Hauck is now the winningest coach in Big Sky history. Attendance was 25,888.
The Griz seem to be picking up steam as the season goes on. Much improved play since the NAU loss. I see that MSU beat SS 42-30, scoring 21 points in 4th quarter (to SS’s 13). I didn’t see that game, nor look at the stats (so I don’t have any comparison to make there). I see that former UM QB Britt finally got into a game, and was 3-4 with 2 TD’s.
UM is now up to 3d in the conference in rushing, though very far behind MSU. UM is allowing 15.8 points per game; MSU 19.6. UM is giving up 84 rushing yards per game. MSU 120. Cats are 1st in total offense; UM is 8th.

Good game from the Griz. That targeting call was BS though. What else is that defensive player supposed to do in real time? If that was targeting, then that hit from Corbin Walker out of bounds was targeting too, imo.

Re: Griz finally have complete game
The Cats have yet to play a complete game. The 40-0 Weber game was close but we left 8 points on the field in the kicking game.
There always seems to be a stretch with sloppy play, or penalties, etc. And they have a tendency to give up garbage time TDs, like yesterday when we were up 45-14 with 1 minute left, and also when they played Sac and were up 42-24 late. Not a huge deal but it does cost us style points in the polls.
Hopefully it all comes together for Cat griz and a deep playoff run.

If anybody is not a little worried about the gris game they have not watched them. They are going to be a handful. I think we will need to play a perfect game start to finish to come of missoula with a win.

Re: Griz finally have complete game
Why would anybody be worried to play them? Do you only wanna play crappy teams??
It's a great opportunity to knock them off their high horse and capture a high seed in the playoffs. And if we lose we're still going to the playoffs and probably still with a lower seed. As long as we take care of ewu.

Why would you say the Griz are on a high horse? I haven't observed that at all. And, I agree with the rest of what you said.91catAlum wrote: ↑Sun Nov 05, 2023 11:03 amWhy would anybody be worried to play them? Do you only wanna play crappy teams??

Re: Griz finally have complete game
Some more things from last night's UM game.
Lucas Semb tweet: "Sac State headed to the locker room with groups of teammates fighting one another - verbally and physically with some shoving and grabbing - as they walked off & yelling at what looked like their own fan base behind their bench. Bizarre end to the half!” [This was right after the SS player got tossed for taking off his helmet and throwing it to the ground, with 2 secs left in the half.]
In the 4th Q, UM had 1 pass (the long TD) and 14 rushes. After the TD, 13 rushes, averaging almost 9 yards per carry. UM’s o-line just pounded SS, both in that quarter and at certain other times.
After a huge pushing and shoving match on the Griz sideline (after Bergen had been shoved when he was out of bounds; no penalty, shouldn’t have been one), about 20 or more (guess) SS players got involved with the Griz bench for a long incident. After a long pow wow, the refs gave unsportsmanlike penalties to both teams and said the next player to get one would be tossed. That’s why both a SS player and a Griz player later got tossed for their individual unsportsmanlike penalties. I assume the players don’t have to sit a half like is done for targeting, but don’t know.
Gubner, the all-conference nose guard, had another great game. Almost had a safety on a SD rb. Later ran down the SS QB for a key sack, where Gubner stunted outside of the DE and had to go around the edge to get to get the QB. who had tried to scramble to the other side.

You are such a Gris excuse maker. That is why nobody takes you seriously. In that pushing match out of bounds, about 10 Gris players got in the Sac State players face and started to shove him around. Total garbage from your team. The Sac State guys came to help him when he was getting ganged up on. Don’t make excuses for them.Grizfan7 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 05, 2023 12:53 pmSome more things from last night's UM game.

I didn't make excuses for the Griz or anyone. Of course, a lot of Griz were involved. It was on their sideline. Note that the SS player started the ruckus when he shoved Bergen. My seats are right above the bench area. A lot of SS players got into the shoving match. They are more aggressive than the Griz, in my view. I had a perfect view of what happened.Cataholic wrote: ↑Sun Nov 05, 2023 2:09 pmYou are such a Gris excuse maker. That is why nobody takes you seriously. Re: Griz finally have complete game
I think the biggest thing that the Grizzlies have going for them is their knack for making big plays, especially in their last four games. 97, 52, 42 yesterday with a couple good returns. Against unco they had two pick6s. Against Idaho 76 and 53. 85 TD run vs Davis.
MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Aren’t you the same guy who rushed to Stockman’s the morning after one of your Gris was arrested for assault? Going down to do your own investigation and make sure the authorities didn’t railroad him? You need any other examples? Your history of excuses is a long one.Grizfan7 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 05, 2023 3:05 pmI didn't make excuses for the Griz or anyone. Of course, a lot of Griz were involved. It was on their sideline. Nope, I have never done anything like that and have never represented a Griz in any matter. And, I don't know what incident you are even talking about.Cataholic wrote: ↑Sun Nov 05, 2023 5:17 pmAren’t you the same guy who rushed to Stockman’s the morning after one of your Gris was arrested for assault? Ya how well received would that be? What's this guy's deal posting gris game recaps here? Those that care watch the games, those that don't, don't care.

If you don’t like PR here, you don’t have to respond. Besides, he won’t return when the Griz lose in two weeks.
