MSU secondary: how does it stack up?

Post by TomCat88 » Fri Sep 29, 2023 11:43 am

Woodard, Ortt, Price, Polidore, Johnson, Jackson, Davis, Stillwell, Powdrell.

Trying to think of a time when the Bobcats have been this good and deep. That 2002 group comes to mind.

MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

I can't remember a time when we've been this deep. and I'm old. We've had individual DBs who were arguably better than any 1 single DB on this roster (Sean Hill, Joey Thomas come to mind; maybe Deonte Flowers), but never has MSU had a deeper secondary, that I can recall.

We ran into Dru Polidore’s dad in the parking lot before the Weber game. Nice, mellow dude. Polidore talked about him in the story I did on him.

These guys are definitely getting good coaching and are taking to it. I can’t recall a group better at this part of the season, but let’s wait and see. I have every confidence in our entire Defense going down as one of the collective all time best.

The secondary with kane Ioane and Joey Thomas was pretty elite, that is a duo that you rarely see at this level…. But you could argue that this team has better all around depth.

Jay Hackett and Khiam Hunter also in that group, I think.

Not only the CB depth being great, the versatility of both Safeties gives the options for a multitude of schemes to be employed.

I’m really curious how they do vs a pass happy team. So far we have played teams that prefer to run first, pass second. But so far the defense definitely passes the eye test

For sure. It’ll be a good test. Barnum likes to keep it 50-50. It’s tough to shut anybody out. Tougher on the road.

People are forgetting how good Darius Jones was. He and Flowers were probably the two best CB we have had since Joey Thomas. Simeon Woodard gives me hope as well.
