Maybe you guys get lost in your own frustration, so let's try some perspective. As I mentioned to Toddler, imagine the Griz going to I-A and claiming two NC's. Can you just hear the laughter? If so, you're beginning to understand why we laugh when you hold up "THREE NC's!!" to our two I-AA's.
Not that I don't love slamming the Cats as much as any other good Griz fan, but I think you also have to keep in mind that I-AA didn't even exist until 1978, and in 1976 (when the Cats won their D-II title), many of the current I-AA teams were in Div. II. So I would say that comparing their 1976 title to a I-AA title is an apples-to-apples comparison.
The 1956 title I'm not as sure about. The bottom line is, they won a title at the level at which they were playing at the time, and they deserve credit for that. However, I would say that winning a I-AA title is more of an achievement than the Cats' 1956 title was.
I guess what I'm saying, in a roundabout way, is that in my mind, the score in the national titles race is 2-2, with the Cats having a third title that's worth
something, but not quite equivalent to a third I-AA title. So the Cats are winning the race, for now -- if the Griz were to win a third I-AA title, then we would be winning the race, IMO.
All of this is my opinion, of course, and I don't really expect anyone on either side of this debate to agree with me 100%.
