Coastal Carolina wins College World Series
Good for them! Small school took it to the big boys and beat them in games 2 and 3 to win the college world series! I wish the Cats could get competitive in some other sports. I would love to see baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, and wrestling become MSU sponsored sports. (Not all of them, but a couple would be nice) Must feel nice as an FCS football school to get some national recognition in other sports

Re: Coastal Carolina wins College World Series
So do I understand this correctly... An FCS team won the national championship in baseball and basketball this year! And the year is only half over. Good work FCS!!

Isn't Coastal going FBS this year? Pretty sure it's this year or next.

Thanks. FBS this year in all sports but football, and a two year transition in football.Cat Grad wrote:http://www.goccusports.com/sports/m-foo ... 16aaa.html91catAlum wrote:Isn't Coastal going FBS this year? Pretty sure it's this year or next.

My understanding is that FBS and FCS only refer to football and all other sports compete at the same (D-I) level. Am I missing something here?

Right, my bad, I misspoke. They will join the Sun Belt conference, not the FBS, in all sports except football this year:Cat_gld wrote:My understanding is that FBS and FCS only refer to football and all other sports compete at the same (D-I) level. Am I missing something here?
The Chanticleers join the Sun Belt Conference as full members and will begin play in all sports, with the exception of football, in the upcoming 2016-17 academic year. The CCU football program will begin its two-year transition from the FCS to FBS this fall Next season, CCU will play a full Sun Belt football schedule and will be eligible to win a conference championship, but ineligible for postseason play. The Chanticleers will complete the transition and attain full football membership status, with eligibility to play in a bowl game, for the 2018 season.

Pretty cool that a small school wins the national championship. Not sure why they want to go FBS. They averaged less than 10,000 at football games last year. Seems like the Sun Belt is getting another Idaho, just a little closer distance.

One could discuss forever the differences between FBS and the joke FCS has going on with the playoffs. It at times seems as if small college football is like being a principal/superintendent in a Montana A, B or C school. You are required to do all the federal grants, reports, etc. a midsize school district of about 120k does without the staff. How in the hell does anyone in their right mind think you can properly prepare a group of 17-23 year old kids for a football game in less than seven days, put together the logistics, a game plan, coordinate the boosters flights on the ridiculously small budgets and have an actual game day experience? What about the band? The cheerleaders?Cataholic wrote:Pretty cool that a small school wins the national championship. Not sure why they want to go FBS. This four team playoff format will run through 2025. Then, the Power 5 conferences will decide whether or not to expand to six games. I seriously doubt that they'll expand just because the wannabe conferences or the FCS members want part of their cash cow.77matcat wrote:Isn't FBS is moving toward FCS re: playoffs not the other. I think matcat is right, you are in the minority. FCS football is what college football should be. The FBS is broken. You have 5 FBS conferences that don't have a chance at winning a national title before the season even starts. With the playoffs, the FBS could have a cash bonanza like the final four instead of playing the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise which draws less than a Cat-Griz game.Cat Grad wrote:This four team playoff format will run through 2025. As for Coastal Carolina, why would you want to go FBS in football? It is clearly going to be a money loser with their attendance and they are joining the weakest conference in the country. Additionally, they are already competitive in other sports under the current format.

I fully understand on this board I'm in the minority. I also understand Chris Ault explaining how much money it cost Nevada to participate in the playoffs versus how much money his football team earned from their first bowl game for his entire athletic department. I also fully understand how much virtually each and every playoff school loses in order to participate in the playoffs. Then, I also understand that all bowl games are nonprofits. Sure, their athletic department has to project how many tickets they'll have to sell but, their school and all the residual activities associated with a bowl game more than offsets what the accountants write off.Cataholic wrote:I think matcat is right, you are in the minority. Anyway, this discussion will rage on for years. Meanwhile, the Power 5 will continue to dictate the entire landscape of college football or they'll leave the NCAA again and form their own nonprofit and let the rest of the schools continue to support the nonprofit known as the NCAA.

Will be interesting to see if the FBS schools bow to popular demand and go to an expanded playoff or go with their meaningless bowl format. Playoffs will eventually be the ticket.

Re: Coastal Carolina wins College World Series
Well, you're definitely entitled to your opinion. As so many of the Power 5 schools continue to build onto stadiums with 100k (or nearly that many) seating capacities (or about what we get into our stadium for six games in a year) and all the activities associated with a regular season game, I doubt there'll be very many within the Power 5 schools and their supporters who in actuality want to see this tradition abolished. But, again, I realize I'm in the minority as the entire country wants to see all the bowls abolished...

Re: Coastal Carolina wins College World Series
I guarantee you the FBS playoffs will be expanded as soon as the current contract expires, and I wouldn't be surprised if they try to figure out a way to do it even before that. They'll expand to 8 teams as soon as they possibly can. There's no doubt in my mind about that. I'd like to see 16 teams, but it may be awhile before that happens, if ever.
