New Football Helmet Design
I saw an article on this about a new helmet design by Vicis. Hopefully it helps reduce concussions. Watch the video

Looks like great innovation. Would be cooler with your logo on that helmet.TIrwin24 wrote:Here's the video. Incredible stuff!

That is pretty cool. Wonder what the costs of the helmet will be? A new helmet now is about $400.

Probably a lot less than the settlement numbers the NFL has to dish out in the concussion lawsuit!grizpack wrote:That is pretty cool. Wonder what the costs of the helmet will be? A new helmet now is about $400.

I am fully supportive of this. Not only should the helmet itself keep brains safer, that give in the outer shell may take away some of the appeal of using your head to "lay the wood" to an opponent and make it more about tackling them. The crushing sound and feel of a big hit (from the hitters side, which is what makes it so much "fun" to do) would be reduced. A big hit that involved the head wouldn't be what it used to be. So that in itself may greatly help in reduction of concussions.

I think the initial cost will be over $1000.00 per helmet. Will be trying it at the NFL and some NCAA teams....

Re: New Football Helmet Design
love the reboot approach
still don't know how much force redistribution / reduction to the skull will result in less force of the brain bouncing off the interior skull -- Vicis even admits their tech cannot claim a reduction in concussions yet, just the redistribution and thus reduction in direct impact force to the skull, and by association, a safer helmet
that approach sure seems better than other designs that do not claim to effectively redistribute force in a shear collision -- the kind attributable to more severe concussions -- only the Riddell design it seems has employed the idea of flex absorption to aid in redistribution
the last concussion study I read indicated the highest risk of concussion and CTE occurs with female soccer players than any other kind of athlete, including football, and the brain trauma in soccer actually comes from heading the ball more than collisions
anyway, thanks for posting this, interesting stuff

So is the cause of the concussion the sudden impact or the sudden movement of the head caused by the impact? In one the case the helmet will not fix the problem.

Re: New Football Helmet Design
I found this from the Mayo Clinic:
Your brain has the consistency of gelatin. It's cushioned from everyday jolts and bumps by cerebrospinal fluid inside your skull. A violent blow to your head and neck or upper body can cause your brain to slide back and forth forcefully against the inner walls of your skull.
Sudden acceleration or deceleration of the head, resulting from certain events such as a car crash or being violently shaken, also can cause brain injury.
These injuries affect brain function, usually for a brief period, resulting in signs and symptoms of concussion.
A brain injury of this sort may lead to bleeding in or around your brain, causing symptoms such as prolonged drowsiness and confusion that may develop right away or later.
Such bleeding in your brain can be fatal. That's why anyone who experiences a brain injury needs monitoring in the hours afterward and emergency care if symptoms worsen.
This seems to suggest the cause is head movement not head trauma ( they mention shaking as an example). If I am reading this right would a different helmet help? If not that is very scary. I, like most people I know, always believed that eventually we would design equipment to protect against concussions. If I am reading this right is that even possible and if not??? Players get faster and stronger every year. At what point is the risk too high??

Re: New Football Helmet Design
Probably as a result of that data, there are new rules being handed down from the national indoor soccer rules making group to ban headers altogether in the indoor game. The old guard (the people I work with) are pissed about that, but I can see how its probably a good evolution of the game in the long run. A brain is so much more important than a cool looking header.JDoub wrote:the last concussion study I read indicated the highest risk of concussion and CTE occurs with female soccer players than any other kind of athlete, including football, and the brain trauma in soccer actually comes from heading the ball more than collisions

Re: New Football Helmet Design
A helmet will never be able to prevent all concussions, but the better the helmet can be at absorbing the energy (thus reducing the sudden movement to the brain), the better off we will be.gtapp wrote:So is the cause of the concussion the sudden impact or the sudden movement of the head caused by the impact?
