Griz Defense

Post by catatac » Wed Oct 28, 2015 10:10 am

I think we all agree they have a pretty good defense over there in hippieville. However, they're heading into a four game stretch against some pretty damn good offensive firepower. How many points do you think that D will give up over the next four games on average? My guess is around 35.

I think there's some wishful thinking going on.

They've only given up 35 (exactly 35) to one team all year: NDSU. If my quick math is right, they're giving up an average of 21 ppg. Yes, they play a couple of pretty good offenses over the next few weeks. But I doubt they give up an average of 35. I'll say around 25, 26 And that might be high.

Cal Poly has a pretty salty defense and nearly stole a win from PSU. I think UM will beat PSU because of the Griz defense. Their offense may struggle against the PSU corners, but I still think they get the win. Then Stitt will talk about how awesome his offense is again, and neglect to give credit where credit is due, to his defense.

We'll see. I know we're putting 35 on them, EWU is putting 35 on them, I would think PSU does it on Saturday... ISU is a bug question mark in my mind. But you're right, this all might be wishful thinking, will be interesting to see how they do now that they're finally playing high powered offenses.

I'm not saying the Cats' offense isn't capable, but Cat-Griz is usually a low scoring game, no matter how good either team's offense is (partly because of when it's played). The last time the Cats put up 35 on the Griz was thirty years ago, and they've only broken 25 seven times during that same stretch. Not saying it can't happen this year, but history isn't on your side...

I am interested in the Griz O v. Cat's D. A classic matchup of a resistible force against a movable object.

Where is this coming from? Or is it just the usual cat fan obsession with whomever happens to be the UM head coach?

No. Just an observation. I'm certainly not obsessed with anything Grizzly. Couldn't name a single player off hand, but I do watch the news and Stitt comes across like an a amateur. It's nauseating how much he fawns over his offense and doesn't credit the Griz defense which has been pretty solid. He bragged so much after the NDSU win and not a peep about the defense. If I was on the defense, or a coach, I'd be saying wtf. I get just as sick when coach Ash and our DC talk about how our players aren't doing anything right. Also when he states that we are going to take Cat/Griz just like any other game.

Unfortunately, your one observation doesn't take into account the many, many high compliments Stitt pays to the defense. Stitt knows he has a great defense and he has made many references to that.

All Stitt could talk about all spring and fall is how incredible the defense is and will be. Here kept saying the offense wasn't looking good and had a loooong ways to go but then said its hard to gage it bc the defense is so darn good. He was looking forward to playing a defense other than his own bc he knew it was legit.

there are more threads and references about coach ash on egriz than nearly anything else. so you'd agree that this is griz fan obsession with whomever happens to be the cat coach...?

Tomorrow's test will be a most interesting match up. PSU has already proven themselves and the Griz offense really only having two good games. Was last week a fluke, or a sign of more to come? I might watch the PSU game since I get Cowels and the day will already be shot from watching the Bobcat/UND game. I earlier mentioned that I would favor the Griz but having only seen them play NDSU and CalPoly, and with their uncertainties on offense, I may retract. PSU has a pretty good running attach which could be the difference. Could be high scoring if UM offense is legit. All things considered, I'd say this is the most interesting game of the week.

The Griz defense has been solid, but the only good offense they have played is NAU at home. These next games will be real interesting to watch. Won't be surprised to see the Griz up 35 points in each game.

The one thing that has the Griz defense churning is outstanding play by the linebackers. They are fast, read plays quickly, and can play sideline to sideline. The front 4 is serviceable and the back end is good. We have a proven DC and Legi is outstanding with line work. The psu game will be a huge test for this side of the ball. Given the type of game it is I think we can hold them to 24. What concerns me is the inability of the offense to convert on 3rd down and move the chains. This offense needs to stay on the field longer and give the defense a rest.
