It may go that way but the FBS defenses he has faced lately haven't exactly humiliated him and that was with less talent supporting him than he will have against Michigan. I do believe Michigan will be the toughest D he has faced so we'll see.
Interesting how everyone remembers the OSU upset, but no one remembers the ho-hum performance he put in at Toledo the next week.

I think it was two weeks later and I'm not too sure what you mean by ho-hum. It might not have been his very best day but not his worst either. What was his QB rating?

Yeah, I don't really consider 21-41 326 yards 3 TD/1 INT in a 33-21 loss to a Toledo team that finished 7-5 (5-3 MAC) to be "ho-hum."

Seattle to Billings to Missoula to Bozeman to Portland to Billings

What a ride

Not that I'm defending him, but he also put the hurt on the U of Washington defense last year that had 3 first round NFL draft picks on it...

50% completion rate really isn't that good. Especially against a mid-tier MAC team. Actually, its piss-poor. 8 YPA is OK when you whiff 20 times in a game. But, yes, very ho-hum. Likewise, his game in Bozeman right after the UW game was pretty average for the first 59 minutes. Hell, even after "the drive" he was 25 of 43 for 358. 2 TD, 2 INT.

Not bad, but hardly the stuff of legends. Anyone can step up their game once a year. Think Utah over 'Bama in the Sugar Bowl, or Boise St over OU in the Fiesta Bowl. But playing at that level week in and week out is an entirely different game. Utah, while solid, has never cracked into the top tier of Pac-12 football.

Given that VA has dramatically underperformed (by his standards) in the 2 games following his great performances in Corvallis and Seattle (yes, it was 2 weeks later in Toledo), I think it might be a little early to annoint him as a legit Pac-12 starting QB. Relative to FBS QBs, his arm strength is fine, but his accuracy and more importantly his decision making leave a little to be desired. While he is fast enough to play, he is dramatically undersized.

Papa-I actually root for Oregon (probably 80% of the time; and they will contend for a playoff spot regardless of who plays QB) but if VA is the answer at QB, there are some pretty disturbing questions in Eugene...I think he will play fine, but I have a hard time imagining him surviving a season in the zone-read.

Michigan State may be the best defense that the ducks face all year. VA didn't have a great game against them, but he had them right there in the fourth quarter with a chance to win. He overthrew a WIDE OPEN man in the endzone at the end of the game, however. Pac-12 ready QB? I think the jury is still out, but he has shown that he can play with the big boys.

Thought he looked pretty good given the time he has practiced. I thought he was intentionally throttling back his running. When he gets more confident I believe he'll run more and present defenses with more of a challenge

I thought VA was all over the place. Threw some absolute dimes. Then he missed a wide open WR to win the game. That said, he clearly has the arm to play it the Pac-12. Its a little crazy to say he dialed back the running: 14 attempts for 8 yards. MSU never took him seriously as a rusher-I thought the DL & LB completely bottled him up, and he was never a threat in the option.

It wasn't just VA-MSU shut down the entire Ducks Offense. (one of the Ducks scores was a punt return)

This style of play is a little bit what I alluded to above: VA lacks consistency in big games (Toledo, Montana State last year, Illinios St)

Looked to me that he was a reluctant runner. The result of thinking about an action vs reacting either offensively or defensively
(Cat defense last year is great example) you look and are slow.

When you have all of a month with a team you are thinking a lot.

He was also playing with an injured finger on his throwing hand and was presumably still recovering from a concussion he suffered the week before (he certainly looked dazed after that hit, anyway). With all of that going against him, plus the fact that he hasn't even been in fall camp for the whole time (much less had any history with the program), I think he did amazingly well against one of the best teams in the country.

A few more games under his belt, and he will know the offense well enough to really open things up. Hopes he heals up and stays healthy.

Full disclosure: I'm not a die-hard Duck fan (even though I did live in Oregon for a few years ... but I don't adopt new college football teams as anything more than mere "rooting interests" as the Bobcats are the only college program that has my heart in the fanatic sort of way), but I do follow and pull for the Pac 12 in general, mostly because I know so many alums of the various schools. So I have a bias toward seeing Pac 12 schools do well (except against the BSC), which does make me a bit more positive about VA's transfer and prospects than I would be if he, say, went the way of the devil and landed in the SEC or some other spawn of Satan conference.
