Carpenter or Coppack?

I've read several posts with Carpenter slotted for the starting QB spot next season. I was just wondering how he and Coppack compared? Is he clearly better or will there be a QB competition in the Fall?

I'm just hoping that Coach Kramer resists the temptation of bringing in a I-A dropdown and gives these guys a chance.

I think that Carpenter won the #2 spot last spring, that is why he is the front runner as of now. Both guys are very capable from what I have seen and what Kramer has said.

I also agree that we should go with these two instead of bringing in a drop down QB. Both fellas have 3 years in the system... and that is invaluable when looking at the transition from Lulay to new guy.

I'm with you fellas on the drop down. But, Coach K did mention the other day that they are looking at a transfer QB. And, I saw something posted over here from E-griz saying that possibly a QB named Swogger who is the backup at WSU may be that person. Honestly, if we were going after a transfer, the only way I would be happy about it is if the guy had started and was proven on the college field but had a falling out with his coaches. Bringing in a backup seems just the same as using Carpenter or Coppack, who I have confidence can play well for us.

I'm with you fellas on the drop down. But, Coach K did mention the other day that they are looking at a transfer QB. I wouldn't mind bringing in a transfer just in case, just don't name him the starter coming in. Also, it would have to be the right fit. I don't think we should have our hearts set on bringing in a transfer (ie Hauck).

Regarding Swooger...he was the WSU starter last year ('04) until he broke his leg. Upon return his job was taken. Many Cougs don't agree with that. WSU had a lot of talent this year. They led most of the way in nearly every game they played (except USC of course) and folded in the fading seconds. UCLA went into overtime. Some knowlegable Cougs say it may have been different with Swogger. Certainly Swogger must feel that way. His playing style reminds me somewhat of the guy who transferred to the griz prior to the guy from ('04). Were they both from Colorado?
Anyway, if Swogger's interested in MSU I'll leave it to the coaches.

If the coaches bring in a QB transfer, it will only be because they think it is an upgrade. A QB transfer will not come to MSU thinking they will be listed as 3rd and given a shot only if both the other guys fail (definition of insurance). The QB will need to feel (from what the coaches say) there is a very good shot at starting if they show they are the goods. Also, the coaches can't burn a 3rd scholarship on a QB that isn't going to start. That would be 3 (and probably a 4th with a freshman) at one position. That is a large number for a Div IAA, and 3 would be in the Junior/Senior level.

For the guys that say Carpenter and/or Coppack should be the guy, don't bring one in or even look. Remember this come Oct/November if they are having trouble. Defend your decisions in the then threads to get Kramer and Bailey out of town because the QB position has a problem.

To make it clear. I like Carpenter and Coppack. They will be very solid performers and I truely believe the team will be good next year with them. However, if there is a QB drop down that will be here for 2 to 3 years and is talented. It would be crazy not to look. This could raise the team up to a championship level. I am sure the Griz are looking for a transfer QB if they can find the right one.

One of the news affiliates in Washington reported that Swogger is transferring to Youngstown State. He was voted Mr. Football or something like that in the state of Ohio (he also grew up in Youngstown). At 6'5" 240lbs (around 240 I think), he's a beast for a QB in terms of size.

Are you talking about Drew Miller? He was a transfer from BYU.

Yes, it was Miller. Thanks. But apparently Swogger is history. Funny how things go. Swogger was Mike Prices' QB of the future. Price leaves and when Swogger was installed at QB one of the most highly recruited QB's in the west transferred out of WSU to UW (imagine that!). Then the new Cougar coach decides to make a change and sits Swogger down. Tyrone Willingham arrives in Seattle and also decides to make a QB change relagating the transfer to 3rd/4th on the depth chart when he'd now be at least 2nd in Pullman.
Hey anacondagriz..I assume that means "Anaconda" the "Smelter City", do you still live there? One of my favorite towns in Montana. I was through there just a few months ago; hopped off I90 to play the Old Works. Super idea building that with SuperFund $.

If the Cats are interested in a potential DIA drop down, they should hope that it is Brady Leaf. Leaf has played well this year and has two years of eligibility remaining. He will likely be 3rd on the DC next year when
Clemens returns and is behind Dixon who is also a RSSO. He has Montana ties and would be excellent to keep our passing game improving. Also, maybe he could convince a couple of DI receivers to come with him.

Clemens is a Senior. He is gone and Brady looks to have proven himself as a contender for the starting job. He won't be transfering.
