As a Griz fan, I am embarrassed that my team can just throw money at everything in order to pad the won/lost schedule. It is no mistake as to why our lifetime road playoff record is 0-6, or why we seemingly waltz into the NC game many years because we get to play every playoff game at home. It is embarrassing to me. Our record is manipulated and fabricated. We are rarely as good on the field as our record suggests.
You can spin it any way you like, but these are the facts. I'm not saying any IAA school wouldn't love to have this advantage. But, this does not change the fact that we are not worthy of our record. Any Griz fan who really believes that the 2005 Griz are a better team than the 2005 Cats has got his head up his *ss.
A couple of things to review: Griz win over ISU convincingly on the road, Cats win by FG...Griz 3-2 on the road in 2005, Cats 1-4...Griz losses 1-AA by total of 24 points, Cat losses in 1-AA by total of 52 points...Griz 1-AA record in 2005 7-2, Cat record in 1-AA in 2005 7-3...
The Cats won the big game, congrats! However, the numbers don't justify them as a better selection to the playoffs, home or away...
Hey WolfCat, check the Marshall, Youngstown State and Georgia Southern playoff histories as well. My guess is they played a lot of home playoff games too...Georgia Southern has a history of playing lower division teams yet I haven't heard mention of them from you. Marshall played back-to-back National Championship games AT HOME, yet you don't mention them...
Tough road games? How about Idaho, Oregon State, Marshall, Furman, Montana State every other year, Eastern Washington every other year...Hey, what's our record in these games in the past 10 years or so???
Sorry the Cats didn't make the playoffs...but it isn't Montana's fault. No apologies necessary...

Vs. Cal Poly, and with the W already this season, that logic simply would favor the game to be in Missoula.Live4Griz wrote:Life...let me ask you a question.lifeloyalsigmsu wrote:Great question!! Along the same lines, why does EWU, in essence the outright conference winner with their defeating the other 2 BSC co-champs, have to play on the road in what is one of the harder venues to win in Northern Iowa?
I don't know the intricacies of the seeding nor the selection at this point, but I don't understand why UM is playing Poly again instead of some other team (for example, Hampton or another team from back east). I also don't understand why EWU didn't get their first round game at home.
The recent history and $$$ obviously decided this travesty. If you had the ability to remain objective with this question, don't you think EWU should be playing at home while the griz should be on the road this coming week?

EWU played a brutal schedule at home and on the road. Based on that, they deserve a home game too.Bozgriz wrote:I can't make a good argument for UM playing at home...we all know that money talks. The $$ and nothing else this season got you a home game and, in truth, there's a good chance the griz might see a 2nd round game. I haven't seen the brackets, but would that game be at home too?

No more brutal than the Cats or Griz...They lost to Weber and Idaho State too. Griz played Oregon, Cats played Okla State, EWU played UC-Davis and San Jose State with NAIA Western Oregon in there...No, they earned a road game...lifeloyalsigmsu wrote:EWU played a brutal schedule at home and on the road. It seems to me there are two different arguements that have crossed over into each other here.Live4Griz wrote:WeedKillinCat wrote:With the way the Griz have played this year (third in the conference), explain to us how they should earn a home playoff game over Eastern. That is why we have a home game...that & we are not playing a seeded team. There is NO other answer to your question.
My argument for us having a home game has been our history...that is our reward building the program we have. The Griz have had better years on the Gridiron, but we are playing Cal Poly & we did beat them...so why do you think we shouldn't be playing at home.
One arguement is whether or not the Griz deserve to be in the playoffs. The second arguement is what did they do to deserve a home game in the first round.
My feelings on this are:
1) Give credit to the Griz athletics department for recognizing that the selection committee looks at wins and losses when making their selection to the playoffs. So, the Griz have done a fine job in scheduling teams such as Fort Lewis, South Dakota State in order to maximize their chances of providing an enhanced record.
2) The Griz may be down a bit this year. But, they have a program that has built a strong back bone the last 10-15 years. They most likely are going to continue to stay where they are at because of this. What does this translate to? Tradition
3) Because of this tradition they have enjoyed immense fan support to the tune of 23K+ at every home game. Because of the fact that they are not playing a seeded team, the home game goes to the team that has the ability to provide the best financial bid to the NCAA. For the NCAA, between Cal Poly and UofM that's an easy decision. Heck, unless the Griz would have been matched against a seeded team (which shouldn't have happened this year due to the fact that they almost got one of the seeds had they beaten us and because they were so highly rated all year) they would have gotten the home game against anyone.
Until MSU develops the tradition of making the playoffs year after year, or the Griz decline to the point where they aren't seen as a year to year contender, we will need to accept what they have accomplished and push to do it ourselves. Kramer said a very similar thing just today at the coach's corner. So, he recognizes it as well.

Griz: 3-1 against I-AA competition, and a loss to a top ten I-A squad.WeedKillinCat wrote:I think THIS YEAR the Griz didn't EARN a home game. Prove your worth on the road!!
'Cats: 1-3 against I-AA competition, and needed the last second field goal to get the win over Weber State.
All Griz games against unseeded teams are at Washington Grizzly stadium, as the NCAA selection criteria are based on attendance and bid amount, and no team currently in the playoffs comes close to Washington Grizzly's attendance. It's the NCAA that set the criteria, so lobby them for a change.
If the 'Cats would like to increase attendance, then I suggest that 4,000 individuals commit to season tickets for the next four years at $150 per year. That will give the athletic deparmtent sufficent funds to contruct an expansion where those fans can sit. Until then, quit your complaining.

So, yes, it was all $$$ because if there wasn't that variable in the equation, EWU would be playing at home and UM wouldn't.theblackgecko wrote:Griz: 3-1 against I-AA competition, and a loss to a top ten I-A squad.WeedKillinCat wrote:I think THIS YEAR the Griz didn't EARN a home game. To the Cat fans who root for the Griz: Thank you, fellow Montanans...we appreciate the support and we are glad that both Montana schools are performing well in the Big Sky and on a National level...some year we oughta have a rematch in Chatty!
To the Cat fans who root against the Griz: If you take pleasure in Grizzly defeats, well all I have to say is I am glad that you don't get too much pleasure! I hope your grit your teeth about every home victory for the Griz played in front of the best fans in the best facilities in the Rocky Mountains. Every continued Griz success that stokes your distaste, or hate, or dare I say jealosy, just gives us Griz fans a little more schadenfreude.
Peace.

If the Big Sky is the toughest conference, and since EWU won this conference playing all the same teams as the Griz, shouldn't that count more when considering playoff games. The autobid team should get a better seed than the 3rd. place team, regardless of the non-conference games.
If this was basketball should the team that won the conference host the tourney or the team with the best overall record. EWU should be at home.

Sorry the Cats didn't make the playoffs...but it isn't Montana's fault. No apologies necessary...
I don't think it's fair to compare Montana's 2005 road record to Montana State's without considering the competition. Montana's schdedule included games at ISU, NAU and Sac State, all bottom half Big Sky teams. MSU had EWU, PSU and Weber, all top half Big Sky teams, and Cal Poly on the road. Is this the Grizzlies' fault? Of course not. But it doesn't change the fact that Montana lost the only tough road games they played this season.
Look, the Montana AD knows how to play the game. An 8-3 Montana team is going to get to the playoffs and host at least one round. I don't think it's a coincidence that this year's, and it's looking like next year's, non-conference schedules happen to be soft at the same time there are a few more question marks about the quality of the team.
Playoffs aside, it's just my opinion that Montana State had a better team than Montana this year. I think if UM had played MSU's schedule, they would've dropped a couple more games.
Bottom line, at the end of the day, I worry about the Bobcats and let Griz fans worry about the Griz. Am I disappointed we're not in the playoffs? Of course. But I'm happy with the quality of the team we put on the field this season.
