Slingbox questions?

Our local NBC Channel this morning did a short on cutting the cable cord. I don't know why they didn't say Cable and Satellite???
Anyway they showed slingbox and said you could stream quite a few channels. What channels are available? I think they showed ESPN. I like FoxBusiness and doubt that would be on the list. I think they showed either Food/Cooking Channel.
Channel 3 may have even quoted a monthly fee but I don't really remember.
Is it a decent option?

You are confusing sling box (which sends what you have to any device anywhere) with Dish Sling. Dish sling is streamed and has a few channels, but no local channels. The basic pachage has 20 channels, but you can ad other packages.

Im watching espn on slingtv right now. It has espn, espn2, tbs, tnt, cnn, food network, disney, and a few others for $20/month. I stream it through my roku.

Pretty cool, except that you can't really get standalone internet from any company cheaper than you could if you bundled TV with their internet, unless things have changed in the last few years. I tried to drop my cable and just go with internet once, and was told that would be more expensive than the bundle I was on...

I pay $30 a month for my Century link, it is standalone. My phone is Ooma, over the internet and I have dish tv. I know in Townsend you can get 8mbs download for $60 with unlimited usage.

Are you in Townsend allcat? My Sister-in-law, her hubby, their Daughter, her hubby and their two girls live there.....The folks live at Grassy Mountain. The kids are in Townsend.

We pay $40 for our Dsl, ATT. We complained a few months ago about some issues and ATT dropped it to $39.99 for 6mbs. I think it will go up to $45-$49 in a few months. Our Dish is the next to the lowest package and it is about $68.....

No I'm on the east shore of Canyon Ferry. Is ATT your phone, I"m at the end of the fiber and get 5mbs. I would look for some other provider at that price. The only reason I know about Townsend is that I contacted a company called Global Net and inquired about their service.

ATT was our landline/Internet (dsl). We dropped the landline about 3-4 months ago and now have Verizon for the cell's. Where we are Verizon has the best coverage but it is not the least expensive. Not sure but the full price for the "elite" service is $45+-. We have one other choice here, digital path, but their customer service is not highly rated. Not always happy with ATT but the saying the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know.. And for the same program it is $54 a month.
Get this, there is one other choice, our local rural electric. They received a government grant to run fiber in our area, Plumas county and part of Lassen county but "normal people" cannot get the service. The fiber is right across our street but we don't have access.

One huge thing that I think hasn't been talked about enough with this service is this is now the way to buy access to ESPN3/WatchESPN for those that are on cable or internet services that don't provide access. Many people have said that they wish they could just pay a fee to get access to ESPN3, now with this you can...$20/month for sling tv includes access to ESPN3.

And maybe they may add a couple more channels. But then the price increase.....
I wonder if the day will come when you are able to get programming a large carte. Probably not as that would be the ugly word CHOICE.

That is good to know. I was going to wait until football season to subscribe, but until then there is so little on cable that want to watch that it just isn't worth it. Does that service have a yearlong contract -- I heard it was month to month? Does anyone know if it works with Apple TV? I assume I can mirror off my ipad, but I prefer that it work just through the TV.

It sounds like an awesome service, and yes people, myself included, have wanted a way to just get sports channels without having cable.

My issue, unrelated to Sling TV, is that it is cheaper with Xfinity to have internet + TV than it is just to have internet. So for me, it would probably be cheaper to add a sports package to my existing cable package than to downgrade to just internet, and then subscribe to Sling TV.

Fast internet + basic cable = $75
Last time I checked, just internet = $75. Add $20 = $95
I can upgrade to get 100 more channels, including ESPN, for $90.

Until the standalone price of internet comes down, way down, it still doesn't make sense to drop cable. I WISH I COULD JUST DROP CABLE.

EDIT: I see that my internet, standalone, would cost $78.95 a month. Yes, $79 a month for just internet. The broadband system in this country is f*cked.

My internet is $30, I have 5mbs download speed. I have an OOma phone. I can't get broadcast tv where I live. I purchased a lifetime of playon and playlater, which gets me hulu plus. I also have Prime. I'm probably quitting Dish fairly soon.

That happened to me as well. I think to many people were using it, and it crashed. VERY frustrating
