I'm perplexed by anyone blaming Decuire for this incident. It was clearly precipitated by NAU's coach. Where's the angst against Murphy? He was clearly WAY out of line, and even admitted as much and later apologized. Frankly I'm surprised he only received a one game suspension.
Yes, a T could have been called had NAU inbounded. But the reality is, it wouldn't have been and shouldn't have been. As others have pointed out, this was nothing compared to situations you see many times every year where the floor gets flooded with fans, cheerleaders, players, coaches, mascots, and the mop guy after a last second shot, even though there's still time left on the clock. Officials are not going to determine a game with a call like that. And they shouldn't.
As for Decuire, I'm not a big fan because he's coach of the Griz. But if he coached the Cats, I'd absolutely LOVE the dude and his fire and passion. And I'm willing to bet every one on here would too. Sometimes you gotta take off the Griz blinders.
Whether there's a rule on what that player on the bench in street clothes did or not it CLEARLY gave his team an advantage and some sort of penalty should be assessed, if one isn't already on the books. Either a T or advance the ball to mid court. He CLEARLY disrupted the NAU inbound play.
The NAU coach was wrong to go after DeCuire, but DeCuire overreacted. He could've just walked away and there's no incident.
No, this isn't a grizz thing. It's a bad rule thing. There's nothing stopping anyone from doing this if there's no rule against it, which is just plain stupid.

If it's a bad rule thing and not a Griz thing, why don't you complain on this board every time a non player comes on the floor of any game (which happens dozens of times a year)?
A few years ago Eastern fans stormed their football field with time remaining against the Griz. Would you argue they should have been penalized giving the Griz a shot at a winning FG, or should the officials have done what they did, which was clear the field and let the players decide the game?
Your answer will be telling, me thinks.

Wasn't the incident the fact of a no call by the officials on the UM bench?TomCat88 wrote:Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton has done an initial review of the incident that occurred immediately following the end of Friday night’s Big Sky Conference semifinal game between the Montana Grizzlies and Northern Arizona Lumberjacks.
“First thing, I want to compliment the players,’’ Fullerton said. “The players as we watch them, there are no punches thrown, and they are breaking it up. They absolutely did a good job, both sets of players. The one thing people want to know about is (Montana coach) Travis (DeCuire). I see absolutely no action by Travis that would cause us to suspend him or cause any problems for Travis tomorrow. We’re still reviewing the head coach at Northern Arizona.’’
Montana defeated Northern Arizona 61-59 on a Jordan Gregory basket with .4 seconds remaining on the clock. Montana will play Eastern Washington in the 2015 Big Sky Men’s Basketball Championship on Saturday at 7 p.m. Mountain.

Is it my misunderstanding or is this another example of a poor officiating situation being swept under the rug? ESPN seems to agree with me. The altercation after the game is a whole other issue of its own but provoked by the preceding.
I do have to admire all the constructive griz fan input given here. Win any way you can and be proud of it.
The worse part is UM would most likely have won anyway but the actions of the ****** on the UM bench clouds the memory of a win for the players. Regardless of what amybody says I don't believe the players ever feel as good about the win with the cloud of a missed call.

History doesn't agree with you at all though. See the following two examples. No technical fouls called in either situation (and shouldn't have been called).kwcat wrote:ESPN seems to agree with me.
Arizona State fans rush the court early (also a bit of hanging on the rim)
Cal fans rush the court early.
The refs did what they should do in those situations and got things under control (using the P.A. announcer to help) and then let the game be decided on the court, not by people who aren't suited up and/or fans who let their excitement get the best of them. I watch a TON of college basketball every year and cannot remember a single incident where people storming the court early (even on a MUCH bigger scale than 3 people like happened at the Griz game) resulted in a technical foul. I'm sure it has at some point, but it's certainly not common at the college level, yet storming the court early is fairly common. As long as it doesn't happen while the ball is in play it's not going to result in T. If NAU had inbounded the ball before the refs blew the whistle to check the clock and clear the court (at least 2 other students on the other end of the court rushed too) then yeah...it could very well have resulted in a T.
As Jobu, who is a Cat fan asked (and no one seems willing to answer):
I'll answer it as a Griz fan who hates losing to EWU. No, the refs should not have penalized EWU giving the Griz a shot at a winning FG. The game should be decided on the field. cat_bracket, In addition to the griz player dressed in street clothes running off the bench there were also multiple fans running onto the court out of the student section. It's very clear at least two students are seen running across the court from one of the videos taken directly across the court from the student section (possibly the Missoulian or a local news station video). The other point of interest is the clock. It shows 0.4, but the coach is all the way to the key. So you have to assume the clock had more time on it when he first hit the court. Please tell me the refs put more than 0.4 when they restarted the game. I hope they aren't that bad.

I'm not arguing or concerned with the fans being on the court. I've said nothing about the fans in this thread. The player in street clothes makes them irrelevant. Remember when you'd repeatedly beat your little brother at whatever and eventually he'd get sour and pouty so you'd spot him a game or two just to calm him down so he'd stop acting so childish? I wonder if maybe Montana shouldn't give a game or two to MSU in an attempt to achieve the same thing. Do you think it would help?go96griz wrote:cat_bracket, In addition to the griz player dressed in street clothes running off the bench there were also multiple fans running onto the court out of the student section. So you're telling me that if we win on a lucky play against the Griz, and Bob Stitt goes over to Ash, points his finger in his chest and says, "you got f****** lucky", that you would think Ash was immature for getting mad about it? And since you haven't said Murphy was wrong for saying, I'm assuming in this scenario, Stitt would be in the right, correct?[cat_bracket] wrote:Why? It's absolutely true. Of course, you wouldn't be saying that if that scenario happened. You clearly think anything the Griz do is bad. That's fine, I understand it. I think it's a little silly because hell, it's just a game and I tend to think people who value their lives based on what team they root for are a little off-base, but it's your life man, live it how you want.

1. It wasn't a coach. It was a player who is ineligible AND several fans that you can't see in the picture who rushed on the court. In other examples I've provided (which you ignore) players who were suited up even rushed the court. Hell, there was a fan out there taking selfies with a player in one of the examples I gave![cat_bracket] wrote:The other point of interest is the clock. 2. The clock stops when the basket is made. Wouldn't expect you to know that though since you either don't follow college basketball that closely or are so blinded by your hatred for the Griz you're just grasping at straws... hence why you are still arguing this should be a technical foul and ignoring all of the evidence that it shouldn't have been.
3. The refs went to the monitor, reviewed it, and the basket was made with .4 seconds left. So .4 seconds was what it was left at. Again, the clock stops on a made basket that late in the game.
Seriously man, your Griz hatred has blinded you to the point of being ridiculous. Also love how you dodged Jobu's question, and likely will dodge bobcat99's question too.
You doing that says a lot about the real reason as to why you are bent out of shape over this whole situation

You can't have people on your bench running onto the court. It's that simple. Allowing that means teams can use that as a game strategy. If that's what the majority of fans want then I'll gladly walk away.
Your entire tirade about what kind of fan I am is off base. You should take a quick look in the mirror.

Player, coach, whatever. you can't rush the court from your bench in that situation. 0.4, 1.4, 2.4, whatever. You can't rush the court from your bench in that situation. There has to be some kind of penalty for doing that or it becomes the norm and teams are free to use it strategically.Potomac Griz wrote:1. It wasn't a coach.
What question from Jobu did I dodge?

Re: Crazy ending to griz game.
The ref doesn't have to do that. He just has to see that the person (coach, player, chair, clipboard, whatever) came from the bench. End of story.AlphaGriz1 wrote:Now I am confused, granted watching basketball is like root canal but how in the course of a game is a ref supposed to determine the difference between a player dress like everyone in the stadium or a fan wearing a basketball jersey?[cat_bracket] wrote:Seems a refresher course is needed. That dude isnt a fan. He's a player that was sitting on bench in business casual attire.CatBlitz wrote:Just in case someone missed it:
Also I woul like you so show me IN THE RULE BOOK where any rule differentiates a sixth man on the court being different if its a player or a casual fan that rushes the floor at the end of most college basketball games.
I will wait patiently for the rule book to be broke out and educate me.
