Kramer touched briefly on recruiting today in generalities. He said we actually don't have a lot of scholarships to offer because we are young in so many places. A summary from memory:
Offense: high school quarterback, 3-4 JC/transfer WR, one lineman, maybe a transfer QB. But, he would need to be the "right" one. He said that TE, RB are young and solid.
Defense: one HS lineman, one safety, 2 (I think) LB, one corner
I should have written this down to be more accurate as I know the above list is not completely correct.
But, he talked about his staff's approach of encouraging HS athletes to walk on and "earn" the scholarship. He made mention of a couple of walk-ons who have done that.
He did say they have offered scholarship to four HS athletes. Three were still considering MSU and one had committed to UM.

He apologized and I thought it was about half sincere. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, was just a flat out jerk afterwards. It may have been the most disgusting display of ego I've ever seen. It was about two hundred times worse than the most extreme Grizzly fans, or the most extreme Bobcat fans for that matter. Rosenhaus is full of
. The Philadelphia Eagles are probably better off without Owens and that stupid ***hole Drew Rosenhaus.

GO CATS!

I was talking w/ BozoneCat at the last game and the two of us agree that we should offer more partial scholarships...especially to Montana kids. It seems like a lot of kids are deciding between UM and MSU, and MSU offers them a chance to walk on, where UM gives them a little bit of money. Who do you think they're choosing.barechestcat wrote:Kramer touched briefly on recruiting today in generalities. It seems that this would be a good way just to have more bodies on the team. Also, it would be a good way to bring more state wide support. If we can bring in 5-6 more Montana kids every year, I think that would really boost support in a lot of areas.
That being said, I realize that there's probably a reason that Bozone and I aren't D-1 coaches, I think Krames and his staff do a great job of recruiting.

I always thought that Kramer offered partials but it has been posted on BN several times that he does not (all or nothing). Can anyone confirm one way or another? If you look at the number of recruits each year it would suggest that no partials are offered.bearBAC wrote:"the two of us agree that we should offer more partial scholarships...especially to Montana kids. According to a few of the instaters that picked the Griz over the Cats, a partial is what was offered by Both Schools!

The Griz have a recruiting advantage over the Cats in Montana, because of that big stadium sitting over in Missoula, and because of the fact that they have played in 5 of trhe past 10 NC games. It has nothing to do with Hauck's recruiting ability. Mr. personality will never be a recruiting genius as some Griz fans think. All one has to do is look at how he left the U. of Washington program as their recruiting coordinator. None of his former recruits are even starting for U-DUB.
Face facts, the Griz pretty much have their way with the Montana high schollers right now. I think that is why Hauck can get away with offering half-schollies and Kramer can't so easily.
But, Kramer out-recruits Hauck easily for out-of-state and IA drop-down kids. The Griz sugar-coaters will never admit to this fact, but then, does anyone take them seriously anyway?

I think Kramer does offer a few partials, and I know he tries to get qualified kids some academic assistance as well. His policy for the most part, though, is that he wants to offer kids all or nothing. In his view, it is an insult to a kid to offer him a partial when he is offering another kid a full ride. I see his point, and it is a nice thought, but those are the rules, why not take advantage of them? It is going to be awfully hard to get any out-of-state kids to come up to Montana without a full ride, so the partials are generally reserved for the in-state kids (same at UM). For the same reasons wbtfg stated, I think we are just upping our chances that we get a "sleeper"-type kid if we offer more kids partials (rather than just trying to talk them into walking on), and I think that the more Montana kids we get, the better chances we have at building a more substantial fan base across the state. UM has done a good job of this, and has also seemed to get an awful lot of kids who come from families with money - and these families who hail from Montana are far more likely to become significant boosters than someone who lives outside Montana (that is just my personal observation, nothing scientific). I'm not talking about splitting up 20 scholarships, but why not split five schollies to get 10 kids?gtapp wrote:I always thought that Kramer offered partials but it has been posted on BN several times that he does not (all or nothing). These are just my personal observations, and as stated, I'm not a coach. Makes for interesting conversation, though.

We have been doing better in this area the last three years. We don't get as many or all the ones we hope to get but we have been getting about 3 of the top ten in MT. One reason Kramer prefers to recruit in CA is that we are on a level playing field there. We get a lot of grief from griz fans for having so many CA kids on the roster but, as Kramer says, first we have to win and then we can get the MT kids. Plus there are only a handful of really good 1-AA players in the state. Not that there aren't good players in MT just not a high quantity of great players. I posted this previously but between MSU and UM we average only about two 1st team all BSC players total each year from MT schools. When a really good college prospect comes around the PAC 10 grabs him.Wolfman wrote:The Griz have a recruiting advantage over the Cats in Montana, because of that big stadium sitting over in Missoula, and because of the fact that they have played in 5 of trhe past 10 NC games. I think Kramer is indeed making some headway on the Griz for the good Montana kids. And, it's no mystery as to why.
People don't have to listen to Hauck too many years to figure out that he never takes the blame for bad things which happen, he always blames his players. He does this on his TV show, as well as in the newspapers.
Most parents don't want their kids playing for a coach like this. THen, there is his personality (or lack of it). Kramer LOOKS like a football coach when he sits in the living room of a potential recruit. Bobby looks like a weekend golfer. Pretty obvious looking at Hauck that he never played college football.
So, I expect that Kramer will continue to make in-roads on recruiting the "A'team" Montana kids. We'll see what happens this recruiting season. If MSU beats the Griz again this year, which I predict will happen, then Kramer should make even more in-roads in Montana. Hauck is bringing the UM program down, slowly but surely. The Griz fan pin heads are too stupid to see this, because they only look at wins and losses. They don't see through what is really going on. They'll jump on the bandwagon, but it will be too late by then. The damage will be done and the Cats will once again win the Montana recruiting wars. I'm hearing that MSU has the inside track on the Cut Bank QB, as well as Selle. I know Bobby wants Selle badly. Should be interesting.

Right, continue encouraging the Montana kids to walk on, because no Montana kids are good enough out of high school to make the almighty Bobcats!!! You get what you ask for, when Kramer was hired he said he would go find athletes, athletes out of state. Now, we want Kramer and his staff to give partials, if possible. Let's get real, winning is what fills the stands and if you look, I mean really look at both programs in our fine state, when the Cat's or the Griz are successful, they're rosters are filled with Montana kids. At what point do we say enough is enough, give our athletes a chance and the respect they deserve. When it comes to finding a way to win and making plays, Montana knows howwbtfg wrote:I was talking w/ BozoneCat at the last game and the two of us agree that we should offer more partial scholarships...especially to Montana kids. First, Verlanic (who is considering Physical Therapy more for a major-which UM has a better program for than MSU), and several other high schoolers have been MORE IMPRESSED with Hauck than Kramer as a recruiter, secondly, UM does offer a lot more partial scholarships to Montana kids than does MSU, and I think we all can see how well that has worked out for MSU, lack of Montana kids on roster especially ones on the field.

I posted this on another thread, but Selle has offers from MSU, UM, Oregon, and Wyoming. He has not committed anywhere yet. I would say we are ahead of the griz to get him, but there is no guarantee either will. I have also heard Desin from Billings Senior will commit to MSU. Anyone have any info?thuss wrote:Does anybody know what the chances are that the CATS get Selle. Didn't his brother get screwed by UofM so he went and played for Carroll. Selle would be a great pick, that kid throws a great ball.

CornyFred, don't speak for Montana high school kids like that. You have not conducted a poll to determine who is the better recruiter. Neither have I. My opinions are from observing Hauck and Kramer on TV and in person. Their personalities are out there for all to see. Recruiting kids and their parents is salemanship. Pretty obvious listening to Kramer and Bobby about which one is a better sales person.

We should go after that QB from Cut Bank, I can't think of his name, but I've seen him play and he's GOOD. He can run and pass, there really isn't much he can't do from what I've seen. Struggles a little when under pressure, but he didn't see too much pressure this year, I think he only got sacked 2 or 3 times this year.
