Fishing in the fall...and a fail!

Post by Cat Grad » Tue Sep 02, 2014 7:25 pm

Everyone who knows me knows I've been chasing the state record brookie for two years. I have to confess, I've only landed one over five pounds in all the hours I've been on the water. Today, I was ready and out early as the brookie run is on and I was doing really well in the tail end of every hole I worked. I could go out and get so drunk tonight because I played the state record rainbow for over half an hour this morning! It could have been a Cuttbow, but I've never had one of them break water like a steelhead.

Anyway, y'all wish me luck and don't bother asking where these fish are anymore! I shared five years ago how good the fishing is on the Flathead and now it looks as bad as the Yellowstone or Madison. Wall to wall rafts and driftboats every weekend.

I fish "that" lake all the time. There are no native fish in that lake so it couldn't be a cutbow. But the cooler weather has dropped the water temp 5-8 degrees. The biguns are moving up. It was a great weekend up in ye ol fishin hole. ;)

Bobcats lost? Huh.... Oh well... The catching was great. :)

No, I wasn't on "that" lake. I was on the headwaters to "the other" one. You must be thinking of the one where they'll be snagging salmon soon...or not...I know the state record Laker is real close to stumpt...

I stay out of the lakes stocked with rainbow from the Arlee Hatchery west of Kalispell. They heat the eggs so the fish are infertile so as to not compete with native fish. I'm afraid some of the poison used to eradicate the brookies up the Swan may have also gotten a few bulls and that more than the Lakers in Swan Lake affected the bull population. At any rate, if one is going to break the state record for brookies, you need to get out the next couple of years because the stream with the potential state record is scheduled for poisoning.

Caught some nice brookies at a classified location last weekend. Only took two casts and the fish were on it. No records though.

Elk hair fly. Can't remember what dad called it though. Worked like a champ.
