Help Me Understand the Logos

Post by BozCatFan » Wed Apr 17, 2013 9:02 pm

1. Why did we hire a Texas company? I'm curious why we didn't hire a Montana design firm - one that hires MSU graduates, pays taxes, and supports MSU.

2. Why did we need a new logo? The big time schools and pros never change logos. We talk about tradition but tinker with the logo every 5-10 years? I don't get it.

3. Why spend this money when we are hundreds of thousands of dollars in the RED? As a business owner, I simply don't understand this. No matter the spin Fields and Ingraham place on this "investment" this will cost MSU six figures when its all said and done. I don't see the merchandise sales making this up.

4. Instead of spending time going through thousands of logos from November through February, they should have been paying attention to basketball and strategizing how to get that mess fixed.

I would have much rather seen this money be spent on facilities upgrades, scholarships, a better basketball coach, increased marketing budget, and other things tied to revenue.

What's the most prestigious design firm in Montana that specializes in sports marketing?

1. Colter's article indicates that MSU paid $18,000 to the Texas firm. Small change compared to the millions MSU spent on the stadium renovation done by a Montana company, so I'm not sure if this is worth getting too upset about.

2. We didn't need a new logo, but at the same time I don't think it makes much sense to compare a logo that had been around since 2004 to other pro and college logos that have been around forever with no changes. It's not like we are talking about a logo that has been around as long as the Yankees' NY logo, the Green Bay Packers G, or the Detroit Red Wings logo.

3. Much of the money being spent would need to be spent even without a new logo change. For example, the basketball court is at the end of its life and needs to be replaced, new logo or not. FieldTurf doesn't last indefinitely, new logo or not. Having zero clue how much money MSU gets from merchandising sales, I can't really guess if it makes up for the cost but generally trust MSU rather than assuming they are intentionally lying about merchandising revenue covering the costs.

4. Can't disagree with you there!

$18k is hardly enough to do anything you suggested doing.
Fixing the bball program I agree with you on.
And I can't think of much in MT that would have made this any better or worse. If we went with a MT firm and it turned out to be terrible, I can't even imagine the comments.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

Gotta love the comments on all the FB about spending the money to fix buildings, etc, etc.

I've never understood why people complain when a college they chose to attend spends money on its athletics - you chose a school with athletics, did you honestly believe they were some sort of self-sustaining independent entity of the university?

That's like choosing a sports car and then complaining about having to pay for premium fuel.

There are hundreds of colleges and university without sports programs...

I'm guessing that they are counting on making the money spent on designing and changing logos on all the new gear Bobcat fans will buy? People will replace old t-shirts, coats, hats, etc to be current.

Well there is that but also what if you had to replace your gym floor and your astro turf anyway? Wouldn't you want to ensure you had the "freshest" logo available for both?
