Petrino job hunt getting awkward

Bobby Petrino has interest in returning to coaching at Kentucky, his father told the Louisville Courier-Journal on Wednesday.

"I just know this, that he's interested in Kentucky," Bobby Petrino Sr. told the newspaper. "He wants to stay in the SEC. That was his life's goal was to go to the SEC."

While the elder Petrino would like to see his son land at Kentucky, which announced Sunday that Joker Phillips would not return next season, Yahoo Sports! reported the same day the Wildcats would not consider hiring Petrino.

Petrino was fired by fellow SEC school Arkansas in April after a motorcycle accident and subsequent revelation of an affair with a 25-year-old woman who worked for him. Petrino lost $21 million in potential earnings and what he called his "dream job."

"You know, he made mistakes," Petrino Sr. told the paper, "but he couldn't have gone through any punishment worse than losing his job. He's missed coaching tremendously."

Petrino does have ties to the state of Kentucky, having coached at Louisville, where he went 41-9 from 2003-06. He guided the Cardinals to an Orange Bowl victory over Wake Forest in his final season.

Petrino's offense was among the top three in the SEC in each of the past three years at Arkansas. And his offense at Louisville was among the top 10 in the nation for four consecutive seasons.

This part just blows me away. Seriously? The guy has/had a family. I don't think losing his job should have been viewed as the worst possible punishment. It's this attitude why many people in Helena don't care for them.

Couldn't agree more. I nearly spit out my coffee when I read that line. Talk about priorities.

just to play devils advocate here because i think petrino is a tool.....

but his wife and family forgave him right? i mean, his marriage survived and i think they are all still together. so when all was said and done, it appears that losing his job was the worst punishment he suffered. had his family left him maybe he'd be singing a different tune. but it seemed that everything survived but his job...

They might still be together but there is no way that relationship is the same...

well that is speculation to a point. i have seen marriages overcome affairs and end up stronger than ever. not saying that is what always happens obviously but who knows? just saying if his family is intact then maybe losing his job truly was the worst to come out of all of this?

no disagreement there. i think the guy is a complete idiot. will be interesting to see how long it takes before someone gives him a shot again. he's proved he can coach just like he's proved he can be a complete douche...

Do women ever really forgive? I still say dishonoring his marriage is way worse than losing a coaching job. You know he's going to get hired by a high profile program in the near future so it doesn't really seem like a punishment to me. JMO

I'm not sure about a high-profile program. He might need to set his sites a little lower now that he's screwed over the Falcons plus Arkansas... I hope so, anyway. I guess we'll see.

You could be right. Regardless of his off the field issues, he has been pretty successful on the field. Unfortunately for some programs, winning is everything. I think there are a handful of high profile programs that would simply overlook an affair as a bad choice in judgment (after all, it's not illegal), and offer him a chance.

If Kentucky football won't consider him, he won't get to any other SEC job or top 5 conference job. Mike Price is the comparison, so Petrino probably has to go the MAC or Conference USA if he is lucky. I don't think the affair is the damaging part. Showing preference to hiring the girlfriend over more qualified applicants, giving her $20000 and the extremes he went to cover up the accident and affair show severe lapse in judgement. His exit from the NFL doesn't help matters either.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it isn't looking good for Carroll to make the playoffs. What do you all think about Van Diest? My gut tells me he might be done after this season. Would Carroll risk hiring Petrino? Would Petrino swallow his ego and accept it?

I hope that Carroll wouldn't even think of it for one second. Just you asking the question made me throw up a little. If Petrino were to ever actually swallow his ego he would choke to death without a doubt and if his integrity was oxygen he would suffocate. I'll stop here before I tell you how I really feel about him.
