Lulay Candidate for Draddy Trophy

Post by GOKATS » Tue Oct 04, 2005 10:29 am

From MSU.

Montana State quarterback Travis Lulay earned consideration as a
semifinalist for the National Football Foundation's 2005 Draddy Trophy,
considered college football's academic equivalent to the Heisman Trophy,
Tuesday. The NFF presents the award to the top college football player
in each division.
Lulay, an All-Big Sky and Honorable Mention All-America
quarterback last year, is among the top 20 Division I-AA players
all-time in total offense and passing yards. The award, named for former
NFF Chairman and Manhattan College quarterback Vince DePaul Draddy,
carries a $25,000 post-graduate scholarship and a trophy, and is
presented on the basis of leadership, citizenship and academic
achievement.
The NFF pares the list of 184 semifinalists, including 44 from
Division I-AA, to 15 finalists on October 27. Each finalist earns an
$18,000 post-graduate scholarship.

Launched in 1959, the NFF scholar-athlete program became the first
initiative in history to credit a player for both academic and athletic
accomplishments. The Draddy, first awarded in 1990, adds to the
program's
mystique. Past Draddy winners, including two Rhodes Scholars, a Rhodes
Scholar finalist, a Heisman winner and a 3.7 average GPA, are: Chris
Howard
(Air Force, 1990); John B. Culpepper (Florida, 1991); Jim Hansen
(Colorado,
1992); Thomas Burns (Virginia, 1993); Robert Zatechka (Nebraska, 1994);
Bobby Hoying (Ohio State, 1995); Danny Wuerffel (Florida, 1996); Peyton
Manning (Tennessee, 1997); Matt Stinchcomb (Georgia, 1998); Chad
Pennington
(Marshall, 1999); Kyle Vanden Bosch (Nebraska, 2000); Joaquin Gonzalez

Congrats to Travis & Shane MacIntyre of the Griz. I don't know what their post-graduate plans are, but I'm sure the $18,000 available for making the finals is a nice incentive.

Just curious, do you suppose the winner of this award has ever uttered the phrase "Who's your Draddy?"

I would love to see our society take a closer look at the people who are nominated for this award.

These are the kind of quality humans that I look for to have my children look up to.

Thank you Travis, Shane, et al for your contributions on and off the field.

what a great honor for Travis...I also saw Joey Cwik from EWU on there and that makes me happy. I was Joey's RA his freshman year at EWU. Those are both two classy guys and by looking at the previous winners they are in an elite group...hopefully someone from this side of the Mississippi can win it this year and maybe it will be someone from the greatest football conference (with the exception of the officials), the BSC.

Im not sure if it was the same award, but Vince Huntsberger won an award of this nature his senior year. He won something like $20-40,000 for graduate work (he wanted to go into medicine I think). It truly is an honor for the Big Sky conference to be recognized in this manor, and not just for the football that we play.
