Your 12 team Big Sky line up!?

Post by mslacat » Mon Oct 03, 2005 3:41 pm

They are talking about a 12 team Big Sky conference. If you were the "Conference God" and could align any 12 teams into a perfect Big Sky conference who would those teams be. You can take out or add any team you want. Move any team up or down (D-2 up or D-1A down) The only condition I would put on it would be that both Montana State and the Griz would need to be part of the new conference. Myself I am going to have to think about this a little, but I would definately look at Idaho, Boise, and ........ North Carolina

A twelve team BS conference should probably include Carroll College!

I would love to see carrol play either the cats or griz to see how they would stack up. I know they are pretty damn good, it would be fun to see. It would also be fun to see Emmert and Lulay go at it

I don't think it would be very fun to see Carol get killed by MSU. NAIA is light-years behind 1-AA. There is no NAIA school that could make such a huge leap.

What was NDSU before they moved up to 1-AA? I'm not saying Carroll would beat the cats by any means, but they are working on back to back to back NC's, and it would be fun to watch them play a higher caliber team.

NDSU was D-II before they moved up.

NDSU was D-II, and they have been a top tier program in D-II for a long time.

I also want to add, UC Davis already said “no” to joining the Big Sky. They are very happy in their current conference for all sports but football (The Big West with all the other small Cali schools- the conference doesn’t have football).

No offense to anyone, because Carroll is an excellent program- but, I have always hated this argument. Carroll always has a few players that could play in the BSC or better (Casey Fitzsimmons for one). Overall, they do not stand a chance though- it boils down to depth and the trenches. Carroll has had O-lineman under 250 lbs.- not that that is a bad thing, but I would love to see them go up against some of our guys. Nonetheless- GO Saints!

Here's how I think a 12 team lineup might happen:

East: MSU, North Dakota State, North Dakota, South Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Weber State

West: u of montana, EWU, Portland State, Sac State, NAU, Idaho State

I just have a feeling the U of North Dakota is going to come into play sooner than later. There's no way they can stay D-2, beat up on a bunch of tiny no-name schools 52-7 (as they've been doing this season) and watch their former rivals pass by them in D-1.

If Sac State decides to bail on the Big Sky (which I think they might one day) and join Cal Poly and Cal Davis in the Big West/Great West, then Southern Utah is waiting in the wings.

Another extreme long shot might be the U of South Dakota-although they seem much less ambitious than SDSU, NDSU, and even North Dakota.

MSU and um would still play each other every year even though they are in different divisions (I believe the SEC does this with old rivals such as Auburn and Georgia who are in different divisions). Same for Weber State and ISU.

The divisional format would only be for football. In basketball everyone would play twice-thus 22 D-1 games making scheduling difficulties a thing of the past.
