As a side note that's related to this conversation...a win this year in WaG makes us 3-3 in the last 6 trips. I'll definately take that should we come away with the W.

Most Successful FCS Program Of The Last 25 Years
To the OP: don't pull a muscle patting yourself on the back. Oh and wouldn't a qualifier for "successful" be running a clean program throughout the process?

This is about as unbiased of a version of the Cat-Griz rivalry as you'll find. If anyone's into be unbiased.
The following is the section on the history of the game.
This is about as unbiased of a version of the Cat-Griz rivalry as you'll find. If anyone's into be unbiased.
The following is the section on the history of the game.
The Brawl of the Wild is the game between MSU and their primary rival, the University of Montana Grizzlies, for The Great Divide Trophy. As of the most recent matchup in November 2011, Montana leads the series 70-36-5.
The series has three distinct periods. From 1897 to 1916 the teams didn't belong to a conference and at times would play twice per year. Early seasons had seven games or less with one season seeing the Grizzlies play just one game. Four of the five ties in the series came during this era. Montana won 12 games to Montana State's 7.
In 1917 Montana State joined the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and in 1924 Montana joined what is now the PAC-12 Conference when it entered the Pacific Coast Conference. The RMAC included several teams that would become Mountain West members. When MSU joined the RMAC included Colorado, Colorado State, Utah, Utah State, and Brigham Young. When UM joined the PCC included Stanford, California, UCLA, USC, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, and Idaho. The Bobcats remained in the RMAC through 1956, while the Grizzlies remained in the PCC through 1949 and joined the Skyline (aka Mountain States) Conference from 1951-1961. MSU was independent from 1957-1962 and UM was independent in 1950 and 1962. During this period UM enjoyed a 30-8-1 edge in Cat-Griz games.
Both schools entered the Big Sky Conference as charter members in 1963 with Montana holding a 42-15-2 series lead. From 1963 to 1985 Montana State enjoyed its most successful period of the Cat-Griz rivalry. MSU won 17 games to just six for UM. Following that Montana started "The Streak" when it won 16 straight games from 1986 to 2001. MSU ended the drought by winning three of four, while UM holds a 6-4 edge after "The Streak" with Montana winning the most recent game 36-10 in Bozeman. The Big Sky era shows Montana with a 28-21 lead.
Montana has won 22 of the last 26 meetings. Since MSU won its first national championship in 1956, the series shows UM with a 30-26 edge.
MSU - 17 team National Champions (most recent 2025); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

This is like a UW/Oregon thread started by a UW fan, except that UM is actually still an elite program, and talking about the past seems even more pathetic since the present is actually pretty good for UM.
I'm trying to figure the purpose of this thread, if it isn't just an obvious trolling thread by yet another UM fan.

If we win that means you guys have won 4 out of the last 27.... But if you win you own the title of 5 out of the last 26
But yeah if you win your 3-3 in the last 6 showings in WaGriz. Is there any other team that can say that?? I can't think of one.
To bad you'r gonna be 2-4 in the last 6 games in WaGriz.

I think MSU ('02 and '10), Idaho ('86, '90 and '99(FBS)), and EWU ('90, '92 and '97) and are the only teams with more than one win at WGS. UM has only lost 20 games at WGS and has only had two seasons ('87 and '90) with more than one regular season loss in WGS.
MSU - 17 team National Champions (most recent 2025); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

In 1984 MSU became member of club one and done....15 strong. The teams that have more then one FCS NCs happen to lead the FCS in every relevant category....imagine that
But hey at least your a member. I found it surprising how few teams really have won an FCS title.
I'm sure lots of other teams on that list would love to count their comilla bowl or whatever win from half a century ago as an FCS National Championship or pretend that their D II or naia championship counts as an Div I-aa title

Re: Most Successful FCS Program Of The Last 25 Years
Remind me how many championships Montana won when they competed at NAIA or Div II? Was football invented at UM when Div 1AA was established? When the cats won their Div II championship it was against a team that is now an FBS team it was probably a more competitive league than today's FCS. Also when they won their 1984 NC they beat 5 teams who were either Div 1A at the time or whom have since became Div 1A teams. Div 1AA was significantly watered down when the griz won their two championships as opposed to the cats 84 chipper.09griz wrote:allcat wrote:Championships are the real test so this guy is saying we're number 4, we're number 4.

such a stupid argument anyway. you can only win at the level you play in. guys have no control over that. you really think that anyone around the country cares about fcs football? very few do. and most don't consider that a "real" championship either. who cares? championships are championships. let's not act like fcs football is king and d-2 or naia means nothing. because that is exactly how fbs fans look at fcs too. it's dumb.

Actually, it was 6 teams...Louisiana Tech, Arkansas State, Fresno State, Boise State, Nevada-Reno, and Idaho (maybe you weren't counting them since they're I-A in name only?).Weltercat wrote:Remind me how many championships Montana won when they competed at NAIA or Div II? Absolutely hilarious that because it was in a different division or level, that it doesn't count . IF the fiz had one anything previous to '95, they'd bring it up too. It just pisses off a good section of their fans that we have more titles than they do, despite their more recent success. To bad, dUMb will be playing catch up until they can actually win a title game, instead of just getting there and getting their a$$es kicked.

As far as your ? goes define "clean".
A potential qualifier for "success" and a sign that your program is "clean" enough to not effect success in a negative way would be the program avoiding getting sanctioned.
If your program has never had sanctions put on it then apparently its running "clean" enough not to have that aspect have a negative effect on its documented success.
So to answer your question no, running a "clean" program is not a mandatory qualifier to accumulate documented success UNLESS the NCAA deems it "not clean enough" and hands down sanctions that prevent documented success.
All programs are "dirty". It's up to the NCAA to judge programs on an individual and/or partial or whole basis then pass, threat or not hand out sanctions that would prevent success.
Always trying to come up with deceptive thoughts to distract you from the truth has to be exhausting. Try just accepting the Griz for what they are, one of the best of the best, then continue enjoying everything you value in bobcat football.
MSU's future insane legacy possibly started in 2010. I hope not but ****** looks like it could be going in the right direction.

Yep, Montana has been one of the best of the best on the field for 25 years. They've also been one of the worst of the worst off the field.
Now you try accepting that MSU has been one of the best of the best since the 1920s. Undefeated in league play twice in the 20s beating BYU and Wyoming both years along the way. Titles in every decade from the 1930s to the 2010s, except one. Multiple titles in 7 of the last 8 decades. That's over 90 years of consistently being one of the best of the best with three national titles along the way.
We value consistentcy and championships and being more consistent and having more championships that the griz. ha. ha. ha-ha. ha. neener, neener, neener!
