Kalispell QB

Post by raincat » Wed Sep 21, 2005 2:57 pm

I noted this morning in the Seattle Times mention of a red shirt freshman quarterback at Central Washington name of Reilly from Kalispell who is off to a fast start. It said through 4 games of his freshman year his numbers are well ahead of all-time CWU qb, Jon Kitna. Reilly already has thrown 11 td passes.
Kitna is in his 11th year in the NFL.

If I remember right Reilly walked on to WSU as a freshman. I am sure El Gato can confirm, but if that is correct he must have transfered over to Central. Glad to see he is getting some playing time and playing well.

Confirmed.

Mike Reilly (not the Oregon State coach) did walk on at WSU his freshman year; he ran the scout team for the bulk of that season & was red-shirted.

It sounds as if Mike felt he was going to get a legit shot at the QB job the next year, but that didn't materialize. Apparently there were some hard feelings, so Mike looked elsewhere & landed at Central. His Senior year at Flathead, the Cats showed some interest but weren't able to offer a scholarship at that time; they invited Mike to walk on. After the falling out at WSU, I don't know if there was any contact between Mike and the Cats but I wish there had been. I think Mike was hurt by the fact that he only played 1 year at Flathead (although he was the starter for 2 years at the school in Washington where they came from) and that Applegate didn't make him the starter right away.

Mike is a terrific kid from a terrific family. Very intelligent (working toward a Mechanical Engineering degree, I believe), respectful, and mature. His Dad was a kicker at either Idaho or WSU and is currently an assistant for the Braves.

Football wise, Mike is a very good QB. He came to Flathead at the end of his Junior year, after football was already over. At the beginning of his Senior season, the Braves were stuck in a QB controversy because Applegate had another Senior, Dustin Berg, who was the backup QB his Junior year but had to play a number of games due to the 1st stringer going down with an injury. Berg played very well in those games, so Apps felt some "obligation" to give him a chance his final year. MOST of those who follow the Braves, however, knew that Mike was the superior QB and he won the job outright around game 5.

Mike is more of a traditional QB, not a scrambler. He has very good vision, a strong arm, and is tough as nails. I remember playing at CMR that year and Johnson threw every defender he had at Mike. I've NEVER seen a kid take the beating that Reilly took that night; yet he just kept picking himself up and standing in there. We lost that night, but I told my radio partner that any college coach would want Mike after watching that game, despite the fact that we lost. Mike was also a key component of the Braves BBall team that finished 2nd at state to Dissly's Bozeman Hawks team.

I'm glad to see Mike succeeding at CWU. In his first start ever, Central took on UND, ranked in the Top 5 in the nation. Mike was 29-48 for 243 yards with 2 TD's (UND has given up only 2 more TD's in 3 games since the opener). Against Western Montana (his second start), his #'s were 13-17, 250 yards or so, with 4 TD's. They yanked him about half way through the 2nd qtr with Central up 42 - 0.

If any of you get a chance to see CWU play the next few seasons, I'd recommend it. Mike is a great kid and I have no doubt that he'll post some very impressive #'s at CWU.

Unfortunately for griz fans, he wants to be an engineer & design things a little more complex than bongs.

He would probably beat out Washington & Berquist, attorneys at law, however...
