Re: hopper-dropper combo

oops... thought the title said "Hopper Droppings"... carry on.
I just started fly fishing this year and haven't evolved into fishing with a hopper dropper combo yet. Heck, I'm lucky if I can even get the fly to land on the water without belly flopping like an elephant. So, I guess you could say my flies are more of a "hopper flopper" combo...
Retiring my moniker. It's time to ride off into the sunset. It's been a fun ride. Go Cats.

Be a real man and just fish a dry or if you must use two flies put on another dry fly like an ant or a bee.Common Cat wrote:What is your go-to combo for hopper dropper in late summer?

Real men only fish dries ? Boy if that were the case, I would hardly make the cut most of the timeorsalak wrote:Be a real man and just fish a dry or if you must use two flies put on another dry fly like an ant or a bee.Common Cat wrote:What is your go-to combo for hopper dropper in late summer?

Well if you must try a copper John under the hopper the copper adds enough weight to sink the fly fast but not sink the hopper.Common Cat wrote:orsalak wrote:Common Cat wrote:What is your go-to combo for hopper dropper in late summer?

Although, I like your suggestion on the terrestrials...often overlooked. In the summer, I like to use an splitcase pmd or a soft hackle pattern as a dropper over here near Great Falls. A hares ear is always a good bet.

Come on man, don't be a snob. Some of us really enjoy (or in my case, prefer) wet fly. Hell, for stream fishing this time of year, a #6 Eagle Claw offset bait-holder with a live hopper is hard to beat. All it takes is a half hour in tall grass catchin' hoppers before you go out.
Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

Re: Re: hopper-dropper combo
Now that is funny! I enjoy fly fishing but I can't stand elitest fly fisherman. Fish the way you enjoy fishing. My preferred method involves a breath of air and a spear. Don't get to down on me fly guys....I have an orvis wetsuit and sage speargun so its ok.wbtfg wrote:I like to use worms and cheesy marshmellows.

Re: hopper-dropper combo
That's good if you want to catch as many fish as possible but if you enjoy flyfishing for the challenge that it can bring (compared to cheesy marshmallows) then trick them using a dry. There is nothing better then getting them on top. If you like fishing for table fare an earth worm is best.grizzh8r wrote:orsalak wrote:Be a real man and just fish a dry or if you must use two flies put on another dry fly like an ant or a bee.Common Cat wrote:What is your go-to combo for hopper dropper in late summer?![]()

I also don't like flyfishermen who think gear makes a difference. I exclusively flyfish and in the summer I only use drys why because that is how I like to catch them. If you like to spear them that is cool but I hear ugly stick makes a really good and inexpensive gun that is comparable to the Sage!Tri-Cities Cat wrote:Now that is funny! You are probably right. On the other hand...elitist fly fishermen sure do remind me of Griz fans.ilovethecats wrote:did i just stumble into fly fishing smack....?![]()
