High School Wrestling

Post by Platinumcat » Fri Dec 17, 2010 1:57 pm

CMR's Holiday Classic is going on this weekend. What are some matchups you look forward to?

For me, Cole Mendenhall vs Jade Rauser could be a good one. Also, I just found out that Luke Zeiger dropped to 135# this weekend in order to wrestle Sprenkle and Morin. Wow!

With no all-class wrestling tournament this year, I am feeling the pull to drive up tomorrow for what may be the best tournament of the year.

Hope you come up. I am going to be doing some announcing tomorrow. My kid broke his ankle last week in practice and is out 5 more weeks, hopefully. I think there are going to be a ton of great matches. This tourney is pretty much all Montana schools so it will probably be the closest to an all class tournament you will see this year.

The Beck in Missoula will be good but a lot of Idaho and Washington schools there.

I know absolutely nothing about wrestlling-but Belgrade must be pretty good? They went to a big tournament in Idaho and almost won the thing. Can they finally get over the hump and take state? Do they have the numbers to beat Havre?

My thought is yes, yes, and yes. When the time comes, you should try to make the Belgrade/Bozzeman dual. It should be intense!

Several great matches last night.

I think Belgrade has it over Havre this year.

Jade Rausher had his hands full with Cathey from Skyview last night.

Val Rausher beat Cole Mendenhall in OT after the ref gave Rausher a point for Mendenahall's stalling with about 7 seconds left. Not a student of the wrestling reffing but seemed like a weak call to me.

Morin from Great Falls High beat Sprenkle from Senior in a great match.

Benjamin Stroh from Chinook is a beast at 189. He was throwing good wrestlers around like rag dolls. 5 pin in 8 minutes and change.

I think Bozeman will good in duals but I thinkg Great Falls, Glacier and Kalispell have better tournament teams.

Thanks for the info. Everything I've ever known about wrestling I learned from the movie Vision Quest.

I think Cole got the call because he was gassed and stopped attacking while trying to milk the lead. I do agree that a call with 7 seconds left is pretty chincy; especially when it comes off a quick shot on the whistle. Both Val & Cole are very talented wrestlers.

I might disagree about Bozeman as a tournament team. They didn't show as well as I would have liked this weekend. But, that was also with 4 varsity guys out of the lineup for injury/illness. Very possible that other teams were dealing with the same thing. But, I think that Bozeman has an excellent opportunity to compete for the team state title this year.

You may be right. I was just going off of what I saw this weekend and in Billings.

The team that's gonna win state in the AA is the team that qualifies the top 1 or 2 number of wrestlers for the tournament. With teams being able to qualify and score 2 wrestler per weight class, it's all a numbers game now. I wish it were different, but being a great dual team no longer means that you'll be in the top 4 at state.

You are absolutely correct here. This is why I think Bozeman has a shot at the team title too! They have 13-15 seniors, several high contributors in the freshman - junior ranks. It's probably the deepest team Bozeman has fielded in some time.
Time will tell. But, I definitely think they will be in the hunt.
