Guys, I don't want to sound overly optomistic here, but I think we have an excellent group of receivers. They are agile, quick, and run good routes. There wasn't one receiver today that I felt was a weak link. I just hope they can hang on to the ball in game situation, the scrimmage will be a good guage of how good they might be.
Groves impressed me today. He is quick and has good moves. Can run downhill when necessary but also has the ability to break tackles with finesse moves. Bass and JD are ahead of him this year, but we are in capable hands come next year when they leave.
Lulay - not very impressive in the 7-7s, but was dead on during the live drills. Threw one interception that was about chin level to Gatewood (it was a bullet!) that went through his hands then back about 7 yards to a DB. Lulay made some very nice throws on the run downfield. Carpenter and Coppack continue to impress me, especially Carpenter. They are both more mobile than credit is given. Coppack went down for a bit, but was able to walk away under his own power, but he was being worked on before getting up for a good 2 minutes.
Running game - nothing really stood out today. OL was good at creating holes, but until the D is allowed to tackle this is a hard area to judge. Same with passing because Lulay isn't allowed to be sacked.
The passing game was effective today, receivers were finding holes in the zone and Lulay was hitting them. I think our secondary will be improved from last year, but I was a little worried today when too many guys were open downfield. But I don't know whether to attribute that to bad D or great offensive play. Austin seems to be a solid coverage DB from the 1on1s I saw.
Overall, we are slowly but surely improving as the camp goes on, as it should be.
Injuries - Coppack went down but walked it off. Roosevelt was not in pads today. Matakis was running around but not doing anything serious.
I did snap a few pictures today (with film this time!), but it started to get really dark and rainy out so I didn't use up the whole roll, I'll probably save the rest until the scrimmage, or I may go Friday and finish it up and get some pictures posted for you desperate lonely men out there.
