Ah yes, I remember that year well. If you read the article we weren't even mentioned as "backseat drivers" in the conference. In a month from that article the "peasants" from the east came into WG, kicked the griz butts, and got the autobid. Great memory and I like your "familiar theme" analysis.Proud Griz Man wrote:Don't blame UM.

I am not sure if you are just playing devils advocate here Ralph or really didn't understand what some were upset about. In case it was the latter, I will try to paraphrase. Basically they were upset that the portion on the "Typical Fan" doesn't talk anything about dedication to the team, chearing them on through the lean years and rejoicing in recent successes as many of the other team writeups seem to. Rather it paints the picture, and promotes the stigma that I and other MSU fans hate, that the typical MSU fan would trade playoff appearances, winning seasons, possibly even a national championship just to beat the Griz. Depending on the individual fan you talk to, this may or may not be true.ralph wrote:What smack? About the mascot? He makes fun of all the mascots. I don't see that as a smack at MSU.Bay Area Cat wrote: In a vacuum, there is nothing wrong with the piece at all. My points in my previous posts is that if an unbiased source sees this shining through the fanbase, I would say there is at least some truth to it and maybe we should take it as a wakeup call rather than an offense. As CatFamily wrote, as much as I love beating the Griz, I would much rather talk about my beloved Bobcats than worry about what the Griz are doing.
Hope that helps.

Yes that helps and I was sincere in asking what po'd MSU football fans about that piece. I think Burton focused on the rivalry aspect maybe too much. I just chuckled because I do know Bobcat fans that feel that way. I also know there are other things too.kmax wrote:I am not sure if you are just playing devils advocate here Ralph or really didn't understand what some were upset about. I appreciate the article, and the recognition, but I agree it just painted a picture that we only play an entire season of football for game a year, the Brawl. Go back 3-4 years, and I will agree 100% with this statement, as we were consistently bad and the playoffs had eluded us for quite some time, so the only bright spot each season was the chance to beat those bastards in Missoula.
I keep tabs on all BCS teams, maybe the Griz moreso, but that is because the Griz are the biggest threat year in and year out.
I do agree though that there is plenty of people still who believe beating the Griz is the equivalent to winning the Super Bowl.
We here at Bobcatnation need to set the example and concern ourselves more with winning the BCS, playoffs, and hopefully a NC someday.

And this about Grambling:
"Rival: This is quite telling: every single posting on Grambling State anywhere out there in the internet-o-sphere ends up being a smack battle between Grambling and Southern. Even a discussion about Tiger QB Bruce Eugene's height devolves into a GSU/Southern shouting match. And this is when the schools have just opened their practices! If the smack is this bad now, I wonder how harsh the smack will be when the "Bayou Classic" rolls around in November, with this much hatred between the schools? I can't wait! "
Lehigh:
"But Lehigh fans hatred of Lafayette exceeds even the average Englishman's hatred for the French. The Mountain Hawks could beat Delaware and pound Colgate, but a loss to the Leopards in "The Game" would still mean total despair in Lehigh Nation. Now that's a rivalry - sheer ecstasy when you win, and utter dejection when you lose!"
Now we have all three of those things, yet he glorifies it when talking about them, and makes us sound pathetic and bitter. Go figure.

I feel damn good to be ranked #15 in the nation. We should be proud of the fact. I do think that more Cat fans are looking beyond just beating the griz, though it is a huge game. BSC Champs, playoffs, NC, etc. are the ultimate goal. I can only see us climbing the ladder in this ranking in the years to come.
